3 FATHER DON S GOSPEL REFLECTION JN 14:15-21 If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, because it neither sees nor knows him. But you know him, because he remains in you, and will be in you. How quickly we are to say yes when Jesus asks us if we love him? Of course we love him, after all, he died for us; he opened the gates of heaven. Jesus is the path to salvation. But there is a second part of what Jesus says. If we say, yes, that we do love him, then there is an expectation that we will keep his commandments. Now, wait a minute! That might present a bigger challenge than we are ready to take on. It might mean that we have to put a little extra effort into our lives. However, we may not feel that we can do that very well, and we may need some help along the way. Does Jesus have a deal for us! He is giving us an advocate, someone who will support us along the way. This advocate is an amazing gift; our advocate is the Spirit of Truth, a truth that the world does not always recognize. Later in the Gospel, Pilate would ask Jesus, What is truth? Pilate would never know, sadly, nor would Jesus be able to open up his eyes to the truth. All of the pieces are in place for us to be lovers of Jesus in this world. If we are willing to admit that we love Him, our advocate, the Spirit, will dwell within us and reveal ways to remain obedient to Jesus commandments. Simply put, Jesus commandments are the two great commandments: Love God with your whole being and love your neighbor as yourself. One cannot say they love God if they have no clue how to love their neighbor. It is impossible to love a God when we fail to love the very people that God has placed in our lives. And of course, it is more than just words to the Lord. After all, we now have the Spirit of Truth dwelling in our hearts. Of course, the other piece of the story is that Jesus promised not to leave us as orphans; he will remain with us always. The best way that we can experience him is in the Eucharist. Jesus is always present in the breaking of the bread and the blessing of the cup. The more that we realize the gift that is given at the reception of his body and blood, the more we can become what we receive. Once we are aware of what God has given us through his Son, we will be filled with a pure sense of gratitude. This gratitude simply can t be contained - it has to be expressed in acts of kindness! We need to be Christ for others. If we do that, then we may be following the commandments of the Lord without realizing it. The actions simply become a way of life and a part of who we really are, loving Jesus in every sense of the word. Jesus calls us to a new awareness; he calls us by name and it s personal. With the advocate s help, we can humbly surrender to the call. Have a great week! Readings for This Week: May Monday Acts 16: 11-15; Ps 149; Jn 15: 26-16: 4a Tuesday Acts 16: 22-34; Ps 138; Jn 16: 5-11 Wednesday Acts 17: 15, 22-18:1; Ps 148; Jn 16: Thursday Acts 18: 1-8; Ps 98; Jn 16: Friday Acts 18: 9-18; Ps 47; Jn 16: Daily readings can be accessed online from our parish Web site, You can also access them from our parish app! 3

While I am looking forward to this new adventure, I am sad to be leaving all of the families and children of St. John Parish. 8 I Have Called You By Name... Our New Parish Theme! St. John the Evangelist has created this theme in an effort to highlight that we have all been called by God and to emphasize places within our community where others can execute their time and talents. In this section, we highlight groups and ministries within the St. John Parish who have been called by God to give, serve, and share their talents. Please contact Angela at stjohnwc.org if you have a ministry in mind. These groups have been called by name... Youth and Adults - How Can YOU Make a Difference? If you are in 5th grade and up, you can make a difference in our parish! We are always looking for altar attendants at our weekend Masses, and the summer time makes for a GREAT time to start!!
