GATHERING Gathering Music Christ, Be Our Light ELW Hymn 715 Welcome/Theme of the Day Widows are visible everywhere in today s readings. Jesus denounces those scribes who pray impressive prayers but devour widows houses. He commends the poor widow who in his view gave far more than the major donors. Jesus doesn t see her simply as an object of compassion or charity. She, like the widow of Zarephath who shares her last bit of food with Elijah, does something of great importance. *Affirmation of Giving All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism. Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, clothed in majesty ever since the world began, who loves us and frees us from our sins, who leads us with all the saints to everlasting life. Amen. Silence for reflection. God of all creation, you have given us all that we are, all that we have and all that we hope to be. The widow gave sacrificially. She gave all that she had. Teach us to give sacrificially. Help us to trust you more, to be dependent on you to provide for our every need. Open our hearts to give all that we have, not just what is easy or comfortable or disposable income from our abundance. For it is in giving our selves away, in losing our selves, that we learn what God means by abundant living, living as a new being in Christ. Help us to give our whole hearts, minds, and bodies to you and in service to a world in need. 2

5 *Prayer of the Day Let us pray together. God, you have set us free from fear and filled us with good things. You surprise us with your abundant grace and give us all we need. Strengthen our trust in you and in your promises, and bring all the world to share in the treasures that come through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. WORD First Reading A Reading from 1 Kings 17:8-16. NRSV, page 282 This chapter begins the story of Elijah. God sends a drought on Israel because of the sins of King Ahab. This passage depicts God s saving acts not only on behalf of Elijah, but also on behalf of those who are associated with the prophet, even a foreigner, the widow of Zarephath. 6 Psalm 146 The assembly reads responsively. Hallelujah! Praise the LORD, O my soul! I will praise the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being. Put not your trust in rulers, in mortals in whom there is no help. When they breathe their last, they return to earth, and in that day their thoughts perish. Happy are they who have the God of Jacob for their help, whose hope is in the LORD their God; who made heaven and earth, the seas, and all that is in them; who keeps promises forever; who gives justice to those who are oppressed, and food to those who hunger. The LORD sets the captive free. The LORD opens the eyes of the blind; the LORD lifts up those who are bowed down; the LORD loves the righteous. The LORD cares for the stranger; the LORD sustains the orphan and widow, but frustrates the way of the wicked. The LORD shall reign forever, your God, O Zion, throughout all generations. Hallelujah! Second Reading A Reading from Hebrews 9: NRSV, page 976 The letter to the Hebrews describes Christ as a high priest who offers himself as a sacrifice for our sin. Christ does not die again and again each year. He died once, is alive with God, and will reveal himself on the last day. After the reading, Word of God, Word of Life. Thanks be to God. 8 *Sacrament of Holy Baptism Presentation We enter the Christian community in and through baptism. We are human, sin and fall short of all that God hopes we will be and all that the world needs us to be. God is a forgiving God who draws us into the cleansing baptismal water with Christ. With the water and the Word, the Spirit blows into us and we become a beloved child of God. Our baptism is followed by a lifelong journey of being nurtured and formed by the Word as taught through our family, affirmed by us, and experienced in and through the presence of Christ in worship, water, Word, wine, bread, and prayer. In our baptism, we are called to the mission of Christ, to be disciples in our daily lives for the sake of the world. Trusting in the grace and love of God, Patrick and Alison, do you desire to have Owen baptized? Response: We do. Alison and Patrick, as you present Owen to receive the gift of baptism, we are entrusted with these responsibilities: + to live with him among God's faithful people, + bring him to the word of God and the holy supper, + teach him the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, + place in his hands the holy scriptures, + and nurture him in faith and prayer, + so that Owen may learn to trust God, + proclaim Christ through word and deed, + care for others and the world God made, + and work for justice and peace. Patrick and Alison, do you promise to help Owen grow in the Christian faith and life? Response: We do. Kadie and Eric, as Owen s Godparents, do you promise to nurture him in the Christian faith as you are empowered by God s Spirit, and to help him live into the promises of baptism and to stay connected with the body of Christ in a faith community? Response: We do. People of God, do you promise to support, nurture, teach, pray and welcome Owen in his new life in Christ? We do. 8

9 Affirmation of Faith Baptism Alison and Patrick, Kadie and Eric, I ask you to reject sin, affirm your faith in Christ, and proclaim the faith of the church. Do you reject the devil and all the forces that defy God, the powers of this world that rebel against God, and the ways of sin that draw you from God? Response: We do. With the whole church, let us confess our faith, the faith in which we baptize. People of God, do you believe in God the Father? Yes, I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? Yes, I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? Yes, I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The assembly is seated. We give you thanks, God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and you created the world by your Word, calling forth life. Send your Holy Spirit into this water and on all who are washed in it, that they may be given new life. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. Sustain Owen with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. Amen. Owen, child of God, you are sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. Amen. Owen, child of God, you are clothed in Christ. All who are baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Amen. Welcome A: Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify our Father in heaven. Let us welcome the newly baptized. We welcome you into the body of Christ and into the mission we share: join us in giving thanks and praise to God, as we bear God's creative and renewing Word to all the world. After each petition: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Enfold all things in your compassion, O God, and bring us into your life through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. *Share the Peace The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. The people greet one another with the peace of Christ. 10

11 Offering Lord, I Trust Thee Handel Adult Choir The assembly responds to the Word of God by gathering an offering for the mission of the church, including the care of those in need. The music is offered as a gift to the glory of God. You may give your offering in the offering plate, or by using a credit or debit card at the Giving Kiosk, or Give by Text ( ), or through Simply Giving, or by sending it to the church office. The table is set. *Offering Prayer Let us pray. Creator God, you made everything, and you provide for every need. The bread we break and the wine we pour come from you. As we eat and drink with thanksgiving, fill us with your love; let that love flow through us to others; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. *Great Thanksgiving MEAL The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, Holy, Holy WOV setting 5 Words and music on next page 11

12 Holy God, our Bread of life, our Table, and our Food, you created a world in which all may be satisfied by your abundance. You dined with Abraham and Sarah, promising them life, and fed your people Israel with manna from heaven. You sent your Son to eat with sinners and to become food for the world. Words of Institution And so we eat and drink with thanks, and we remember the sacrifice of Jesus which makes us whole. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. By your Spirit nurture and sustain us with this meal: strengthen us to serve all in hunger and want, and by this bread and cup make of us the body of your Son. Through him all glory and honor is yours, Almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy Church, both now and forever. Amen 12

13 *Lord s Prayer Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. *Invitation to Communion Hunger no more. Thirst no more. Come to the banquet of life. Amen. Sacrament of Holy Communion All who are baptized and believe in the presence of Jesus Christ in Holy Communion are welcome to receive the Sacrament. To facilitate flow, the ushers invite the side sections, the front few rows and then the back rows. The people come forward, using the center aisle, and may kneel or stand at the altar rail. Gluten free wafers are available. Our wine is grape juice so that all may freely receive and is served by common or individual cup. Please return to your seat using the side aisles. Children may receive the sacrament if they have completed instruction with a pastor. Children who do not commune may come forward for a blessing. 13

16 *Prayer Let us pray. Holy and compassionate God, in bread and wine you give us gifts that form us to be humble and courageous. May your words come to life in our serving and in our witness, that we may speak a living voice of healing and justice to all the world, through Jesus Christ, our rock and our redeemer.
