Youth Ministry: Sunday, November 5th from 6:30-8pm. All high schoolers are welcome to join us at anytime! Confirmation 2018 Parent/Teen meeting will be held for all 9th grade students on Monday, November 6th at 6:30 pm in the main church. Faith Formation classes at Emerson- Williams will not be held on Saturday, November 11th in celebration of Veteran s Day Weekend. Little Lambs our optional Kindergarten Program has begun. 5 Page Four 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time...November 5, 2017 A Weekly Bible Study 31 st Sunday in Ordinary Time All Readings In his own way each of the authors of today s readings addresses the question: Who is my teacher? The prophet Malachi offers an indictment to the priests who have turned away from the covenant. Moreover, these leaders have also caused many to falter by their instruction. The very authorities the faithful have depended upon for encouragement in the faith have not only let them down, but led them astray. Some six centuries later Paul sets a more positive and decisive tone in his first letter to the Thessalonians. He writes: In receiving the word of God from hearing us, you received not a human word but, as it truly is, the word of God, which is now at work in you who believe. Those who take the word of God to heart and live it offer authentic instruction. And as the word is at work in the believer, the faith of the hearer nurtures and nourishes the growth of the word. In today s Gospel, Jesus comes down hard on the scholars of the law who not only distort the requirements of the covenant but exploit their positions as teachers. The heavy burdens of the law are in strict contrast to the gentleness that Paul expresses in his letter to the Thessalonians. Whom do we call our teachers? All of these readings beg some self-reflection: To whom do we look for the true instruction in the faith? Do we regard the Gospel as burdensome? Are we willing to act on the hard sayings of Jesus? Do we look to those teachers whose lives exemplify Gospel values of charity and humility, such as we hear today? How do we take the word of God to heart and live it? Let us pray, as Paul invites us, that the word we welcome into our hearts may be the word of God and that we may allow it to be constantly at work within us who believe. And let us look to the evangelist Matthew who reminds us: You have but one teacher, the Christ (Matt 23:10). 7 Page Six 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time...November 5, 2017 THE GREATEST AMONG US Whom do you admire? Is it the President of the United States or a movie star or a billionaire? These are people whom the world exalts as great. Like the Pharisees in today s Gospel, they have places of honor wherever they go. Would you like to follow in their footsteps? The scriptures for today offer different examples for us to follow. Jesus tells us that the greatest among us are the servants. These are the people we are to honor and imitate. We are called to be like Paul, who worked hard to serve the needs of his communities, and Jesus, who gave his life in service to the world. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Do we not have one father? If you said the Vatican, or St. Peter s, you were off by a few miles, since the answer is the Basilica of St. John, the Lateran, the Mother Church of all the churches of the world and the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome. It takes its name from the Lateran family, the Trumps of their day, who somehow ran afoul of the Emperor Nero. He seized all their property, including their vast Roman palace and estate. We don t know how Plautius displeased Nero so badly, but eventually all the Lateran property came to Constantine, the first Christian emperor, through his wife, Fausta. Early in the fourth century, when Christianity was at last legalized, Constantine gave the property to the church. Soon the great meeting halls were expanded and adapted. Over the centuries, the church building has been sacked by armies, ruined by fire, torn down, and rebuilt. The oldest and most unchanged part of the Lateran is a vast, separate baptistery with steps leading down to a huge green basalt pool. Imagine what a triumphal moment the dedication of this public church building was for a community that had worshiped in secret for so long! This Thursday s feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica is really about the tradition of consecrating space for worship, and so by extension, a feast for your parish church building and, given the beautiful second reading, for its baptistery as well. Due to the HIPPA Regulations it has become increasingly difficult for Fr. Moran to locate parishioners who are hospitalized.
