3 Page Three The Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ...June 2, 2013 Registration for Faith Formation To register a new student that has not been baptized at The Church of the Incarnation, a copy of your child's Baptismal certificate must accompany the registration form in order to be processed. Gr. 9 students (Sept. 2013) will receive an invitation in Oct. for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Faith Formation (Religious Education) formally begins in First Grade. First Communion preparation begins in First Grade. The Pre-K/Kindergarten programs entitled Little Lambs begin in October and are optional. All Faith Formation communities are in recess for the summer. 4 Page Four The Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ...June 2, 2013 A Weekly Bible Study Solemnity of The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Luke 9:11-17 We come hungry, tired, poor and broken, God s precious anawim. We come yet again to this deserted place to listen to the wisdom of this young preacher, to witness his miraculous actions and to cling to the hope he offers. We partake of a simple and sustaining food, remembering that which our forebears received from the Lord as they wandered in their own deserted place. Like manna in the wilderness, the bread we receive will be sufficient for this day. And it is the work of someone s hands and hearts, one of us. Yet there is something truly mysterious and miraculous about the bread he breaks for us today. It is mysterious as it seems to satisfy not only our bodies but our souls. We are no longer hungry, but satisfied. We are no longer tired, but strengthened. No longer poor, we are rich beyond all telling. No longer broken, this bread makes us whole. It is miraculous as it feeds all of us from a few morsels. We want so much to receive the morsel from his hand, to feel his warmth and his power as his flesh grazes ours. But he urges his disciples to meander among our throngs and distribute from their hands. In this action we are joined together in community of minds and hearts, a unity of hands outstretched, eager to receive this bread, many as one. Somehow in these moments, we will become one body. In our act of receiving we will be nourished in the most profound way. In our partaking we will become bread for others. We who are now blessed with his body, consumed by his true and real presence, will too become broken and shared, our very lives distributed. We are the body of Christ. Beginning in January 2014, our Sunday Mass schedule will be revised. Sunday masses will be celebrated at 8:30am and 10:30am only. Our vigil mass will remain at 5pm on Saturday. The Incarnation Parish Council came to this decision based on a number of factors. We appreciate the cooperation of all of our parishioners in this regard. Invitation to Deacon Michael Rogers S.J. First Mass On June 8, 2013 Michael Rogers S.J., son of Mike and Mary-Ellen Rogers, of our parish will be ordained to the priesthood at University Church at Fordham University. Michael is a graduate of Corpus Christi School, Northwest Catholic and the College of the Holy Cross. He began his religious career as an altar server here at Incarnation. On June 9, 2013, Father Mike will celebrate his first Mass at St. Pius X Church, 44 Elm Street in Westerly, R.I. at 2:00 p.m. St. Pius is the summer parish of the Rogers family, and the parish that his mom grew up in. A reception will follow the Mass in the St. Pius Church Hall where Fr. Mike will offer first blessings. Incarnation parishioners are invited to attend. St. Irenaeus Corpus Christi School in Wethersfield is seeking after school aides to fill positions for the 2013/2014 school year. 6 Page Six The Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ June 2, 2013 APPRECIATING THE EUCHARIST For centuries today s feast was called Corpus Christi (the Body of Christ) and was observed on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday. In many countries it has now been moved to Sunday, so that more people may participate in its celebration. In its present form, the liturgy of this day focuses our attention on the meaning of the Eucharist that we celebrate so often. Today s reading from Genesis tells how Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought out bread and wine and prayed over Abram. Though it took place nearly two thousand years before Jesus, this event has long been used by the Church as an ancient foreshadowing of the Eucharist. The reading from Paul s Letter to the Corinthians is the same one we hear proclaimed on Holy Thursday, retelling the story of the first blessing and sharing of bread and wine at the Last Supper. Luke s tale of the miraculous feeding of the crowd in today s Gospel is also clearly intended to evoke the Eucharist. Thus today s readings give us three opportunities to deepen our appreciation of the Body and Blood of Christ. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Melchizedek brought out bread and wine and blessed Abram (Genesis 14:18-20). Psalm You are a priest forever, in the line of Melchizedek (Psalm 110). Second Reading Paul gives his description of the institution of the Eucharist (1 Corinthians 11:23-26). Gospel Jesus spoke to the crowd about the kingdom of God and then fed them with five loaves and two fish (Luke 9:11b-17). Juliana was a nun in Belgium in the thirteenth century. She served in a hospital for lepers. She became convinced through her prayer that the liturgical year was incomplete because it had no feast for the Eucharist. Her efforts were not welcome, and a supervising priest sought to punish her for promoting a feast that nobody wanted. He even had her accused of financial mismanagement and banished her from her convent. Shortly after she was exiled, the bishop approved the feast. It quickly spread through Europe. In those days, people very seldom received Holy Communion, and so the processions through the streets with the Eucharistic bread not only led to an awareness of Christ s hunger to be with us, but prepared the way for a deeper desire to receive Christ s Body and Blood in more frequent Communion. The feast grew rapidly, but Juliana disappeared into poverty and a hidden life. She ended her days as an anchoress, a woman living in seclusion in a room attached to a parish church. Imagine her delight at seeing us gathered at the table of the Lord on this day, aware of Christ s presence in our midst, sharing fully in Christ s Body and Blood. Our celebration today invests her struggle and sorrows with dignity and meaning.
