The second collection next weekend will be a special one-time collection to help fund the completion of the Trinity Dome in preparation for the 100th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of the National Shrine in The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC, is the largest Roman Catholic church in the United States and North America, and is one of the ten largest churches in the world. The Bishops of the United States have approved this special collection to provide the faithful with an opportunity to contribute to the legacy begun by their ancestors, to include honoring their Catholic heritage and entrusting themselves and their families to the Mother of God. Funds for the completion of the Trinity Dome will be raised primarily through this national collection. Please go to for more information. 4 Page Three Fourth Sunday of Easter.May 7, 2017 Children s Liturgy of the Word: Sunday, May 7th at the 10:30am mass. We welcome Filomena Marinelli and Mary & John Breton. May Crowning: Sunday, May 7th at the 10:30am Mass. All First Communion children will be processing and all children are invited to process also. Join us for refreshments after mass. First Communion 2017 On Saturday, April 29th (27) beautiful children received the Lord in the Eucharist for the first time and on Saturday, May 6th, (28) beautiful children received the Lord in the Eucharist for the first time. It was truly a beautiful day in the lives of our children and their families. We would like to thank each family for your participation and witness to the Sacred Sacrament of First Holy Communion. May the Eucharist always be at the center of your family life. The children prepared very well for this moment. We invite our parishioners to view the prayer center in the Narthex. Each child came to the quiet on their retreat day and pondered the prayer starter The light of Jesus shines through us when. The prayer of each child reflects the true simplicity and beauty of the relationship with Jesus that children have. May we, as a community grow from the prayers of the children. Each child also created a blessing cup on their retreat as a remembrance of their First Communion. The catechist strives to be an instrument of the Lord s power and sign of the Spirit s presence. We are grateful to all catechists who serve in the ministry of education in our parish. We especially ask God s blessings on those who helped to prepare the children for this day. We are most grateful to all those who dedicated their time and shared their talents to make this day meaningful and special. The theme of The Light Of Jesus Shines Through Us is carried through in the banner present in the sanctuary and in the prayers of the children. Our sincere gratitude to our Pastor, Fr. James Moran for his guidance & support for our children, parents & catechists all year. Special gratitude to Theresa Aiudi and to Maggie Seaver for their faithful assistance to the Faith Formation Office. A special thank you to Antoinette Munoz, our sacristan, who so beautifully prepared the vessels and vestments for our Eucharistic celebration. Gratitude sings out to Theodora Niver and the beautiful voices of the cantors, youth choir and sounds of the musicians. Our sincerest thank you to Noranne Wamester, Pastoral Associate, whose leadership and spiritual direction has made this time such a beautiful witness of Christ s enduring love for His children. 5 Page Four Fourth Sunday of Easter..May 7, 2017 A Weekly Bible Study 4 th Sunday of Easter 1 Peter 2:20-25 In the post-resurrection scene of John s Gospel, Peter receives his great commission from the Lord: Feed my sheep. Peter feeds Christ s sheep with the brilliance of his brief letters which we will read over the Easter season. Often overshadowed by those of his contemporary, Paul, the letters of Peter are no less an invitation to hear the Gospel message anew. The characteristic feature of 1 Peter is the sharp contrast between the sober call to suffer in imitation of Christ and the deep joy experienced in following him. Can suffering and joy be reconciled? Peter thinks so! Peter first looks to Christ as a model of human suffering. He begins by speaking of the grace of patience. Perhaps when we elevate patient endurance to a grace we see it differently. We experience its gifts of perseverance, strength and hope. We unite ourselves with the suffering Christ, sharing in his redemptive act of love. How much closer can we be to our Lord? We join in solidarity with suffering humanity, embracing deeper levels of compassion. I know your suffering. I, too, have been there. We say this to one another with confidence because we have heard it from Christ in the depths of our being. And wherein lies the joy? Unlike the fleeting, superficial joys of earthly pleasures, this joy resides deep within the spiritual heart. It is the joy of one who knows that the Christ who suffers with us holds us in a loving embrace. It is the joy reflected on the face of the Good Shepherd of today s reading as He gently carries us back from our waywardness. It is the joy that resides deep within the heart of one whose trials bring inner transformation. It is the joy reflected on the face of one whose suffering resides in the hope of eternal life. Our suffering is never in vain. It is the cost of our discipleship and our deepest connection to Christ and His humanity. As Peter describes it later in his letter, participating in that life of Christ in its deepest dimensions is for us inexpressible joy. ANNUAL SOCIAL JUSTICE CONFERENCE The Archdiocesan Office for Catholic Social Justice Ministry will host its 8 th Bishop Peter Rosazza Social Justice Conference, Rooted in Faith: One Family Under God on Saturday, June 10 from 9 am to 3:00 pm at St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield (Check -in begins at 8 am.). The conference theme is Rooted in Faith, One Family under God, and will feature two keynote addresses. Sister Ruth Rosenbaum, TC, PhD, Founder and Executive Director, CREA: Center for Reflection, Education and Action will open the program with her keynote address. Participants will then have the opportunity to choose from a selection of 12 workshops. The day concludes with a closing keynote by Fr. Joseph Donnelly, Pastor, Sacred Heart Church, Southbury. 7 Page Six Fourth Sunday of Easter.May 7, 2017 THE CALL OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD The Twenty-third Psalm, today s responsorial psalm, is arguably the best known of all the psalms. The line that reads Even though I walk in the dark valley / I fear no evil; for you are at my side / with your rod and your staff / that give me courage (Psalm 23:4) connects this week s scriptures to the wonderful story of the road to Emmaus, which we heard last week. The Lord Jesus, our Good Shepherd, is constantly at our side. He calls us each by name, beckoning us into a deeper relationship with him. That call, issued to each of us at the moment of our baptism, carries with it the promise of the Good Shepherd: I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly (John 10:10). TODAY S READINGS First Reading All peoples called by God will receive the gift of the Spirit if they repent and are baptized (Acts 2:14a, 36-41). Psalm The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want (Psalm 23). Second Reading Once we were like straying sheep; but now we have been returned to the shepherd, our guardian (1 Peter 2:20b-25). Nereus and Achilleus; St. Pancras Saturday: Our Lady of Fatima TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The fact that many monastic churches do not have a prominent tabernacle shapes the patterns of liturgical prayer. Monastic communities often protect the ancient value of receiving from the same sacrifice, meaning that the communicants are assured that what they eat and drink in the Holy Mysteries actually comes from the same celebration. It surprises many to learn that the Church does not foresee, nor does it provide for, Communion of the faithful from the reserved Sacrament. Liturgical laws have long defended your right to receive from the same sacrifice, the same Mass, that you attend. At one time, of course, the bread for the Eucharist was the ordinary bread of the day, except unleavened, probably prepared at home. It was broken and distributed to the faithful. Early on the loaf itself was referred to as the hostia in Latin, meaning the sacrifice, the same word for the sacrificial animal in Jewish worship, and for Jesus as the Lamb of God. By giving his life on the cross, Jesus became the hostia for us. To this day in the Greek Church, one of the tasks of the priest s wife is to bake the bread for the Divine Liturgy, sometimes in a bakery oven dedicated to that purpose and called a Bethlehem. Today s familiar individual hosts first appeared in the eleventh century at about the time when tabernacles were coming into use. The turn away from bready bread allowed the hosts to be reserved since they did not spoil like regular bread, and made the annual Easter duty counts easier. 8 Page Seven Fourth Sunday of Easter..May 7, 2017 DIGNITY OF LIFE SEMINAR: Church of The Incarnation on Tuesday, May 16th at 2pm and 7pm in Fr. Crawford Hall. This program will offer information regarding how to manage assistance to the elderly during end of life discussions. There will be an elder care attorney, a long term care provider and a funeral director present. It is for age 50+ parishioners or the children of older parishioners with questions. The seminar will last an hour and there will be refreshments available. Please pick up a flyer at the exits and fill it out. You may return your completed flyer in the marked baskets at the exits. Easter Communion Regulation: Catholics are obliged to receive Communion at least once between the 1st Sunday of Lent & Trinity Sunday. We have Low Gluten Hosts for parishioners who need them. Please let the priest know prior to Mass of your request. We have two candles located in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. The Sanctuary Light enclosed in red glass burns to signify that the Blessed Sacrament is present in the Tabernacle in the Chapel. The Blessed Virgin Mary Candle is mounted on the wall near the Blessed Virgin Mary Statue. Corpus Christi School of Wethersfield, a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, will host a special Spring Open House on Wednesday, May 10 th from 6 7:30pm at Corpus Christi School, 581 Silas Deane Highway.
