Our group continues to grow and we welcome any high school students to join us. Come check us out! Congratulations to Anne Camilliere on her commissioning as a Lay Minister for our parish. Anne has completed a two year study and her focus will be on her Inspired Parenting Ministry and also as the chairperson of the Faith Formation Advisory Board. Let us celebrate her commissioning. God Bless you Anne! A Family Perspective.Today s Gospel tells us God actually wants to take up residence in your family. We will come and make our home with you. Every family is called to be a tabernacle where God dwells. Is Jesus a permanent member of your family or a temporary guest? Today the promise is given. The choice is ours. Registration for Faith Formation To register a new student that has not been baptized at The Church of the Incarnation, a copy of your child's Baptismal certificate must accompany the registration form in order to be processed. Gr. 9 students (Sept. 2013) will receive an invitation in Oct. for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Faith Formation (Religious Education) formally begins in First Grade. First Communion preparation begins in First Grade. The Pre-K/ Kindergarten programs entitled Little Lambs begin in October and are optional. PRAYER FOR THE CELEBRATION OF OUR 50TH ANNIVERSARY JUBILEE Heavenly Father, Your grace has enabled the Church of the Incarnation to be built on a strong foundation of faith and Christian life these last 50 years. May our parish be strengthened through the treasure and talents of its members, the wisdom that our Holy Spirit inspires in our leaders, and the simple gifts of those who continue to reach out to members in need. May families be joined in greater love and unity. May youth find inspiration in models of faith. May single members find solidarity with one another. May the wisdom and grace of our aged members guide us in faith. Gracious God, may we celebrate each day as your gift, each Eucharist as your promise of salvation, and each encounter with one another as your love poured out upon us. 4 Page Four Pentecost Sunday...May 19, 2013 A Weekly Bible Study Pentecost Sunday Acts 2:1-11 Did they ever imagine what would happen? The first line of today s reading from Acts brings us to a very festive celebration, Pentecost. But it is not yet that which we know. Fifty days after Passover Jews gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate their Pentecost, a memorial of Moses receiving of the Law on Mt. Sinai. What an appropriate occasion for the birth of our Church! Little did those gathered suspect what would then take place. A driving wind and fire filled the room! This must have been quite a terrifying sight. The sound of a great rush of wind heralded a new action of God in the history of salvation. A new commission is about to descend upon Jerusalem. The symbolic fire that we encounter often in Hebrew Scriptures is now seen as parting and coming to rest on each of those gathered. Earlier Luke tells us that the group, numbering about 120, included the apostles, Jesus mother, other women and his brothers. The Spirit has filled this community of believers enabling them to proclaim the Good News in their own language. This Spirit now drives the Church to fulfill Jesus commission to be his witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. This, too, is our commission, one that has enlivened and fortified the church in every age. How very exciting to witness this coming together of peoples and nations, symbolized by the many dialects. A world once tossed into Babel s confusion is now brought back into harmony. Joining hearts and spirits, this gathering called church can now proclaim with one voice: Come Holy Spirit! Fill the hearts of your faithful, send us forth among your people to proclaim the Good News of salvation, and renew the face of our earth! Beginning in January 2014, our Sunday Mass schedule will be revised. Sunday masses will be celebrated at 8:30am and 10:30am only. Our vigil mass will remain at 5pm on Saturday. The Incarnation Parish Council came to this decision based on a number of factors. We appreciate the cooperation of all of our parishioners in this regard. Invitation to Deacon Michael Rogers S.J. First Mass On June 8, 2013 Michael Rogers S.J., son of Mike and Mary-Ellen Rogers, of our parish will be ordained to the priesthood at University Church at Fordham University. Michael is a graduate of Corpus Christi School, Northwest Catholic and the College of the Holy Cross. He began his religious career as an altar server here at Incarnation. On June 9, 2013, Father Mike will celebrate his first Mass at St. Pius X Church, 44 Elm Street in Westerly, R.I. at 2:00 p.m. St. Pius is the summer parish of the Rogers family, and the parish that his mom grew up in. A reception will follow the Mass in the St. Pius Church Hall where Fr. Mike will offer first blessings. Incarnation parishioners are invited to attend. This weekend is the Archbishop s Annual Appeal 2013 Commitment Weekend. If you have not yet made a donation, please consider doing so. Thank you! He will celebrate Mass at the four major basilicas in Rome: St. Peter, St. Mary Major, St. Paul Outside the Walls and St. John Lateran. 6 Page Six Pentecost Sunday May 19, 2013 THE DAY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT John s Gospel tells us that when Jesus breathed on the disciples, the Holy Spirit came into them, empowering them to forgive sins and to gather all people into union with one another. The book of Genesis had explained the divisions among nations with the story of the Tower of Babel. In rebellious pride, human beings had struggled to become equal to God. The result was chaos, strife, the inability even to speak the same language among themselves. Today s reading from Acts tells how the Spirit has just the opposite effect. Strangers from many nations hear and understand one another, each in his or her own tongue. This message of unity in the Spirit is repeated in the reading from Corinthians. There are many gifts, many ways to serve. One way is not higher, nor one person better than another. There is but one Spirit, who accomplishes all the different works we do, acting through us. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Filled with the Holy Spirit, the apostles begin to speak in tongues (Acts 2:1-11). Psalm Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth (Psalm 104). Second Reading In one Spirit we are baptized into one body (1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13) or Romans 8:8-17. Gospel Jesus Christ appears to the disciples and sends them on their mission (John 20:19-23) or John 14:15-16, 23b-26. While the liturgical color of the Easter season is gold, on this last day we have red. For the first thousand years of the church, there were no firm rules for using colors. Only wealthy churches could afford a full array of colors, and most places used the best vestments, no matter the color, for the greatest feasts. The Church spelled out an exact plan for color, including red for Pentecost, only in 1570, but local differences held on until the 1800s. Color experts tell us that red is a hot color, best used for fast-paced, upbeat, active experiences. It is hard to be neutral before red, as any matador will tell you. It invites commitment, draws you in. It is a stimulating color, engaging the eye, stirring hunger. It is the most fitting color for this day when we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit into our lives, a dynamic presence overturning neutrality in favor of passion and commitment. COME TO US, SPIRIT OF HOLINESS Holy Spirit, you banish fear from our hearts; you bear witness in us that we are children of God; we pray to you: Remove from our hearts the spirit of slaves; place in us the spirit of adopted children to make us cry out, Abba, Father!
