4 Page Three We recently celebrated the Crowning of Our Blessed Mother at the 10:30am Mass. It was a very moving day to honor Our Lady, Queen of Peace. May our devotion to Our Blessed Mother grow each day as we pray for peace in our world. Our Lady invites us to pray the rosary as often as we can. Mariela Interian crowned Our Lady during the Mass and the Crown was carried by Sara Aiello. The children from Children s Liturgy of the Word carried pink & white carnations to honor Mary. This was followed by a beautiful procession to the Grotto of our Blessed Mother. This procession included our CLW team, choir members, altar servers and minsters of Holy Communion, our lector, First Communicants and all other parishioners. 5 Page Four Sixth Sunday of Easter..May 21, 2017 A Weekly Bible Study 6 th Sunday of Easter 1 Peter 3:15-18 One of the most profound images in Peter s writing is that of Christ as cornerstone of our church and we as living stones. Last week we considered our role in that regard. There is another dimension to this imagery that needs our attention: these stones will become a stumbling block for many. We as living stones are to stand firm in the faith. Standing firm does not simply mean building up our faith for our own edification. We must be prepared to promote and defend our beliefs, always being ready to give an explanation for our hope as Peter points out. As those who look to us to see the face of Christ, they should see as well the face of hope and promise, strength and endurance. Perhaps the first line of today s reading is the real key to standing firm: Sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts. If Jesus Christ is the center of our lives and the true cornerstone of our hearts, there is nothing we cannot endure. There is no criticism we cannot face; there is no adversity we cannot counter. We as living stones become examples of patient endurance. We do so, as Peter instructs us, with gentleness and reverence, that others may see that Jesus Christ is both our true peace and our true foundation. Peter is also quick to point out that suffering on behalf of the greater good, in imitation of Christ, is part of our Christian witness. There will be many stumbling blocks in the hard words of Jesus, as there will be in our challenge from the unbeliever. And those who choose to reject the faith will also stumble. But we can look at our readiness to bring hope and understanding to those who are weak. And to those who falter we can offer a steady arm: to lift up rather than knock down; to encourage rather than criticize; to build up rather than tear down. Perhaps our message will be best received in the gentleness and reverence of which Peter speaks. As Christ is our foundation, our hope and our peace, we too must be that foundation for others, both believers and non-believers alike. ANNUAL SOCIAL JUSTICE CONFERENCE The Archdiocesan Office for Catholic Social Justice Ministry will host its 8 th Bishop Peter Rosazza Social Justice Conference, Rooted in Faith: One Family Under God on Saturday, June 10 from 9 am to 3:00 pm at St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield (Check -in begins at 8 am.). The conference theme is Rooted in Faith, One Family under God, and will feature two keynote addresses. Sister Ruth Rosenbaum, TC, PhD, Founder and Executive Director, CREA: Center for Reflection, Education and Action will open the program with her keynote address. Participants will then have the opportunity to choose from a selection of 12 workshops. The day concludes with a closing keynote by Fr. Joseph Donnelly, Pastor, Sacred Heart Church, Southbury. 7 Page Six Sixth Sunday of Easter.May 21, 2017 PEOPLE OF HOPE Throughout this Easter season the readings have drawn us into the experience of the early church. We have tasted the excitement and zeal of the first Christians. Now, with them, we listen to the words of Saint Peter, who reminds us that when people notice that we are people of hope, we should be ready to explain why. This challenges us. Do others even notice that we are people of hope? In a world often marked by cynicism and hopelessness, do we stand out as people who offer hope and reassurance to others? In today s Gospel Jesus promises that when he leaves the earth he will not leave us orphaned. Today he promises to send his Advocate, the Spirit of truth who will be with us always. Let us acknowledge the presence of the Holy Spirit and ask the Spirit to make us people of hope. TODAY S READINGS First Reading The people of Samaria accepted the word of God preached by Philip; they received the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:5-8, 14-17). Psalm Let all the earth cry out to God with joy (Psalm 66). In fact, it is a bit of breach of etiquette to genuflect in most Eastern Catholic Churches. If you re visiting an Eastern Catholic or an Orthodox church, the when in Rome rule should be adopted. Watch what the home team is doing! Usually, Eastern Catholics and Orthodox reserve a small portion of the eucharistic bread for the dying in a cupboard or eucharistic dove, but it is not a center of attention or devotion. The rule is to make a profound bow, called a metasis, toward the altar bowing deeply while making the sign of the cross. East and West split years before we Westerners began to reserve the Blessed Sacrament prominently in our churches. Thus, the East never changed the original custom of bowing toward the altar. Increasingly, as tabernacles became more widespread in the West and moved into prominent placement within churches, we replaced the bow toward the altar with a genuflection toward the Blessed Sacrament when its place of reservation is visible. In a church where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved in a special chapel or off the main axis of the building, normally you should bow toward the altar when you enter your pew, because the eucharistic table is the principal sign of Christ s presence in the church building. If you have ever participated in the liturgy of Dedication of a Church and Altar, there is no mistaking the altar s significance: it is first slathered with chrism and then adorned with a brazier billowing clouds of incense that fill the whole church as a sign of prayer and presence!

8 Page Seven Sixth Sunday of Easter..May 21, 2017 Operation HomeFront was a huge success. A total of three homes were selected in our town to be worked on. We are very grateful to our parishioners for their participation on this wonderful day. Over 30 of our parishioners attended. We again salute our many teens who brought their time and energy to this event. We also salute our adults who were wonderful assistants in so many areas. Projects included plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, painting and yard cleanup and beautifying. This entire effort was a reflection of the true spirit of caring and compassion for our neighbors. Again, thank you to all who were involved. Your participation and enthusiasm were true blessings to many people. We received a thank you letter from Homefront thanking us for the most generous donation toward the sponsorship pledge of the Church of the Incarnation Team. If you have offered a Mass in memory of a loved one we invite you to carry the gifts up at Mass. Please notify the greeter prior to Mass that you will do so. Thank you! Easter Communion Regulation: Catholics are obliged to receive Communion at least once between the 1st Sunday of Lent & Trinity Sunday. We have Low Gluten Hosts for parishioners who need them. Please let the priest know prior to Mass of your request. We have two candles located in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. The Sanctuary Light enclosed in red glass burns to signify that the Blessed Sacrament is present in the Tabernacle in the Chapel. The Blessed Virgin Mary Candle is mounted on the wall near the Blessed Virgin Mary Statue. We received a thank you note from the Wethersfield Social & Youth Services thanking our parish for the donation that was made to their Community Baby Shower.
