3 Page Three Fifth Sunday of Easter...May 18, 2014 Our Lady of Grace Grotto Dedication Sunday, May 18 th after 10:30am Mass The dedication honoring Our Lady of Grace and an outdoor May crowning will be held after the 10:30 Mass this Sunday. All are welcome to attend this wonderful occasion located near the Blessed Sacrament Chapel entrance of the Church of the Incarnation. Our cantors will lead us in procession down the middle aisle outside to the grotto, where the statue will be blessed by Fr. Moran and she will be crowned by Corinna Marinelli & her sister Sofia. Refreshments will be served after the dedication. All are welcome to join. The grotto was the result of the generosity of many Sponsors and Parishioners of The Incarnation 50 th Jubilee Golf Tournament held last May in honor of the 50 th Anniversary. On behalf of the golf planning committee; Michael Stefano, Jeff McBride, Noranne Wamester, Cathy Beers and Lisa Stefano, they would like to especially thank the many golfers, dinner attendees, sponsors and raffle contributors that made this grotto possible. Special thanks to the grotto planning committee; Father Moran, Michael Stefano, Noranne Wamester, Antoinette Munoz, Philip Pasternak and Carol Lawrence for bringing the grotto to reality. 4 Page Four Fifth Sunday of Easter...May 18, 2014 A Weekly Bible Study 5 th Sunday of Easter 1 Peter 2:4-9 Living stone. Two words that are seemingly contradictory: one suggesting movement and life; the other a cold, hard inanimate object. It is an interesting marriage of two words that opens our second reading. What does Peter mean? Peter quotes a very familiar line from Psalm 118 which we proclaim on Easter: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. Peter obviously refers to Christ the foundation of his church. And it is we, the church, a people of God, who are to be the living stones. We are to breathe new life into an edifice by our living faith. As his Letter continues, Peter outlines our new identity as church, offering four pillars. We are a chosen race. We are the true people of God, the new Israel. By virtue of our Baptism we realize a new identity that brings spiritual blessings of membership in the church. Our adoption in Christ is both privilege and responsibility. We are a royal priesthood. We take an active part in divine worship, celebrating the memorial of the Paschal Mystery, joining with the priest in his sacrificial offering. Our life in all of its dimensions becomes a spiritual sacrifice acceptable to God, characterized by faith and obedience. We are a holy nation. We are a covenant people, called as one community to a new level of holiness. Centered in a firm spiritual life, we put our faith into action. Compassion, service and discipleship are the hallmarks of our call to follow Christ. We are a people of his own. In this life and in eternity, we belong to God, the source of all life and goodness. Peter has set forth a new standard of excellence in the faith. With Christ as the cornerstone, we as living stones make up a church that is strong and vibrant, one that will stand firm forever. Youth Ministry will be held this Sunday, May 18th from 6:30-8pm in Fr. Crawford Hall. Registration for grades pre-k thru 8 have been sent in the mail. Pre-K and Kindergarten are optional and do not begin until the end of October. Grade Nine will receive a special invitation to begin their Confirmation journey, if they so choose, in October. All Faith Formation communities are now in recess. The 2014 Archbishop s Annual Appeal has begun in our parish and throughout the Archdiocese. This weekend is Commitment Weekend in our parish and across the Archdiocese. If you have not made a gift or pledge, please pray about your decision and make a pledge or one-time gift. This month after years of study seven men are being ordained to the priesthood. During their years of preparation for this vocation, they were supported by family and friends and by everyone who made a gift to this Appeal. When you make a gift to the Appeal, YOU help meet the cost of priestly formation and education. 5 Page Five Fifth Sunday of Easter...May 18, 2014 THE WAY In today's Gospel reading we hear part of Jesus' discourse at the Last Supper as reported in the Gospel of John. "I am the way and the truth and life," Jesus assures his disciples. At that time they did not understand what he meant; they wanted easy answers. "Just show us the Father," Philip begged. But the first and second readings show us how the early church came to understand Jesus' words. The amazing growth of the church led them to select seven men to do the works of service needed with so many new members. The followers of Jesus had grown in such numbers that Peter could exclaim in his Letter over the fact that Christ, the "rejected stone," was now the cornerstone on whom the salvation of all the world rests. Down to this present day, he is truly the way, the truth, and the life. TODAY'S READINGS First Reading -- To meet their growing needs, the community chooses seven reputable men to serve the new Greek believers (Acts 6:1-7). Psalm -- Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you (Psalm 33). Second Reading -- We, like living stones, let ourselves be built into a spiritual house (1 Peter 2:4-9). Gospel -- "Show us the Father," Philip asks Jesus. To which Jesus replies: "Whoever sees me, sees the Father" (John 14:1-12). CONGRATULATIONS! They also give even infants a taste of the Precious Blood, thereby doing away with any notion of "First Communion" in later childhood. In the West, although we too have an anointing with chrism for the newly baptized, for centuries we have normally reserved a second anointing for the bishop, sometimes many years after baptism. There are many reasons for this, not the least of which is the fact that in early times the bishop was the ordinary person to officiate at baptism, not the presybyter (priest). The bishop did it all, from plunging the catechumens into the font, to pouring chrism over them, to immediately celebrating the Eucharist. When bishops began to cede some of their ministry to the ranks of presbyters, they desired to maintain a strong relationship with baptism. Thus it was decided that the solemn post-baptismal anointing, the laying on of hands, and the prayer for the gifts of the Holy Spirit were to be detached from infant baptism. So, to the present day, we have two anointing's after baptism: one by the priest, and the other normally by the bishop. By the fifth century, the word "confirmation" had surfaced to refer to this second anointing.
