Our Youth Ministry members would like to thank our most generous parishioners for supporting our plans to attend the Steubenville Catholic Youth Conference this summer. We are still accepting donations to help fund this weekend where our youth will gather with over 3000 teens to worship together and grow in their Catholic faith. Donations can be mailed or left at the rectory in an envelope marked: Youth Ministry Stuebenville. We are extremely grateful for your donations as well as your prayers, and we will be sure to pray for all of our parishioners. Registration for Faith Formation: The deadline is June 8th. Letters were mailed. If you wish to register a new student and the child has not been baptized at The Church of the Incarnation, a copy of your child's Baptismal certificate must accompany the registration form in order for the registration to be processed. Gr. 9 students (Sept. 2016) will receive an invitation in Oct. for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Our final Children s Liturgy of the Word for the season was two weeks ago. We will resume in Sept. 4 Page Four 10th Sunday in Ordinary Time..June 5, 2016 A Weekly Bible Study 10 th Sunday in Ordinary Time Galatians 1:11-19 Writing to the churches of Galatia, Paul is concerned that there are ambitious Jewish-Christian missionaries who, although well-meaning, are perverting the message of the Gospel. Paul does not hesitate to set the Galatians straight when he tells them the gospel preached to me is not of human origin but came to me as a revelation of Jesus Christ. We take away two very important lessons from today s second reading. God invites each one of us to go directly to the Sacred Word to find God s truth with open hearts and searching minds. The invitation bids us to enter our own desert where we can linger, ponder, listen quietly for a deepening of the Word s meaning and message. And as with Paul, we absorb the Word of God at ever deepening levels that we may join with him in proclaiming (as we will hear next Sunday), I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me. (Gal 2:20) Should we not go right to the source? It is said that the Bible is its own best commentary. It is far more spiritually advantageous for us to ponder directly the words of Scripture than to rely on countless others thoughts. Printed commentary and reflections can certainly draw us into deeper meanings and wider understandings. But until we come face to face with the Sacred Word, the Word Made Flesh, we will never truly grasp the magnitude of God s saving plan of salvation. Paul goes on to tell us that once he received the revelation he spent three years in the desert of Arabia. Very little is recorded about these years. However, one cannot help but speculate that Paul spent many hours pondering the Scriptures in solitude. Only that depth of immersion could truly enable him to absorb completely the Word of God. Weekly Reflection for the Year of Mercy We clothe the naked when we share our outgrown clothes with the needy, assist a child or disabled person to get dressed, joyfully help with the laundry at home, volunteer to work at a clothing bank, seek out a charity that provides linens and towels to distressed areas, join a group that knits blankets and hats for babies, provide clothing items to a homeless shelter, bring baby clothing to a pregnancy crisis center, become part of a parish shawl ministry, and organize a clothing drive at work or in your community. Use your imagination!

6 Page Six 10th Sunday in Ordinary Time..June 5, 2016 HOPE AND LIFE Today s readings tell the story of two widows. The first reading relates the plight of the widow with whom the prophet Elijah stayed; the Gospel tells about the widow of Nain. In each story, the widow s only son had died. For people who lived in those cultures, the son was the only support of a widow, and the carrying on of the family name by the son was equal to immortality. A widow whose only son has died could lose all hope. Elijah and Jesus are the restorers of hope; they bring the sons back to life. Saint Paul was metaphorically raised from the dead when he experienced the conversion and call from God that he describes in today s second reading. What are Christians called to do today? We may not be able to raise the dead, but perhaps we can rekindle hope for a single parent. We may not be able to convert a persecutor like Paul, but if we speak the gospel openly and gently with our lives, we might touch a life with the Good News. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Elijah revives the son of a widow (1 Kings 17:17-24). Psalm I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me (Psalm 30). The current budget threatens this mandatory obligation of boards of education to provide safe transportation services. The budget under discussion threatens this obligation, which will result in a significant burden to our schools. It is imperative that Catholics unite and call the Governor and the Leaders of the Senate and the House in order to protect, preserve, and restore safe transportation for our Catholic schools. To reserve your spot, please call: or the Vocation Office at: vocations@aohct.org, or use the form on our website at: TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Unless Professor Einstein s theory of relativity can be translated into any useful kind of time-travel, most of our clues about life in the early church will have to come from ancient letters and ancient prayer texts. A prayer text from a dusty library may yield, for example, an understanding of what presbyters actually did. We have such a prayer from the early third century from the hand of Hippolytus of Rome. While our modern prayers derive a great deal from his, some of the practices of the ancient church have fallen away. In his day, bishops were chosen by the people, and the other bishops merely consented. Presbyters, by contrast, seem to have been chosen by the bishops. This makes sense, since it allowed the bishops to hand-pick their most trusted advisers. It seems that bishops were at first reluctant to share their presiding at the Eucharist with presbyters. In fact, by the time of the fourth-century church s growth spurt in Rome, the bishop sent deacons out with fragments of the host from his Eucharist to drop into the chalices of the presbyters at the outlying eucharistic celebrations. We still have a vestige of this fermentum in the Mass today, a reminder of the early bishops desire to give a powerful sign of the unity of all celebrations of the Eucharist with their ministry, and a clue to their reluctance to delegate a sacramental ministry to the presbyters. 8 Page Eight 10th Sunday in Ordinary Time..June 5, 2016 Stewards for Tomorrow - Pastoral Planning In the months of May and June, priests will be meeting in deanery gatherings to review sacramental, liturgical, pastoral and demographic data in an effort to provide initial restructuring proposals for parishes and schools in their deaneries. Once these first-draft proposals are documented, pastors will share them with six to seven lay and religious leaders in their parish to gain their perspectives/feedback on the proposals. (July and August) This process of consultation is integral as we strive to be Stewards For Tomorrow. If you are asked to be part of this process, please share your time and talent with your local priests and deanery representatives, even if it may not be convenient! Please pray daily for the success of this effort. (One way would be to use the prayer printed below) After these rounds of consultation, the recommendations will be synthesized with other models and possibilities provided by PartnersEdge LLC, a national consulting firm that provides this type of service to dioceses throughout the United States. In September, a further model for parishes and schools will again be brought before deaneries for evaluation. At that time the Office of Pastoral Planning will summarize the results from all 17 deaneries and share the proposals with Archbishop Blair and others for further analysis and refinement. It is our hope that by early 2017 we together will have achieved a model for our Archdiocese that will begin to realize our Archdiocesan vision of a local church characterized by spiritual vitality, organizational efficacy and accountability and social and financial responsibility- all for the sake of fulfilling our mission. May the virtue of prudence guide our efforts to be good stewards of the legacy we have inherited from those whose vision in the past helped establish our beloved Archdiocese and its parishes, schools and institutions.
