The Kindergarten program entitled Little Lambs begins in October and is offered as an optional program. Grade 9 Faith Formation students (as of Sept. 2011) will receive an invitation in Oct. for the Sacrament of Confirmation. A Family Perspective In today s gospel Jesus tells us, HE IS THE WAY and warns anyone who offers another way to happiness is a thief and a bandit. Strong words! Don t listen to the sales pitch of society for happiness. Look to yourself where God is present and calls you by name and leads you to abundant life. On Wednesday, June 1, from 7pm- 8:30pm, in Fr. Crawford Hall, Rebecca Feaster Pittman, a former parishioner and lector at Incarnation will offer a presentation on Islam intended to provide basic information about the Islamic Faith. Americans often know little or nothing about Islam and what little is known is sometimes restricted to news reports. Many are surprised that the vast majority of Muslims are not Arab, that Allah is very much the One God, that Christians and Jews believe in and that Muslims accept the Old and New Testaments as holy books and have high regard for both Moses and Jesus. All are welcome to attend this most informative presentation. Rebecca is a former Associated Press reporter who was stationed in Bahrain. The presentation that she will share with us is the same briefing that was given to State Department Employees. She received her Masters of International Public Policy from the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University where she focused on Arab Studies. She also completed her fellowship at Boston University s School of Divinity on Religion and Globalization. 4 Fourth Sunday of Easter...May 15, 2011 THANK YOU FOR HOMEFRONT DAY On Saturday, May 7th, about 40 parishioners from Church of the Incarnation, Sacred Heart, and Corpus Christi came together to participate in HomeFront Day. The Office of Catholic Social Justice Ministry of the Hartford Archdiocese and Americares sponsor this project. Parishes all over the state participated in HomeFront Day to repair and fix up the home of a needy family. This year, we worked on a house in Wethersfield to do some yard work, painting inside and out, repair the back porch and other exterior areas, provide much needed electrical work, and other tasks. It was a huge undertaking, but thanks to the many wonderful, hard working volunteers from all 3 parishes, the job got done. Many thanks to those who provided the food and drinks for all of the volunteers. Special thanks to Sonny Senatro from The Church of the Incarnation who coordinated the volunteers, and to everyone who helped in any way. Your time and talents are very much appreciated for this very worthwhile project. God bless you all! At the beginning, our attention to some changes in the words of the prayers will offer us all an opportunity to raise the bar of our conscious participation it the Mass. The language of this translation is guaranteed to promote understanding of the action of Christ and the Church in the Liturgy. 6 Page Six Fourth Sunday of Easter...May 15, 2011 IN NEED OF A SHEPHERD For a while it was very fashionable to own pigs as pets. The publicity surrounding these creatures informed us that they were contrary to their popular image very clean animals, and also quite smart. Sad to say, sheep will most likely never enjoy this sort of domestic vogue. They are neither clean nor smart and are largely defenseless when left on their own, even in large numbers. The biblical image of us as the flock of sheep is not a particularly flattering one. Sheep without a shepherd are truly sad, because they most likely will perish either from their inability to fend for themselves or from their lack of defenses against predators. Placing ourselves in the heart of this unflattering image can reinforce our faith. Until we come to a profound realization of how much we need a shepherd, we cannot appreciate how deeply blessed we are to have been given a Shepherd, one who laid down his life for us and was raised to life eternal in the Spirit, so he might guide us and we might follow him in faith forever. TODAY S READINGS First Reading All peoples called by God will receive the gift of the Spirit if they repent and are baptized (Acts 2:14a, 36-41). Psalm The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want (Psalm 23). Second Reading Once we were like straying sheep; but now we have been returned to the shepherd, our guardian (1 Peter 2:20b- 25). FEAST OF FAITH The General Intercessions The general intercessions were restored to the liturgy in the reforms that followed the Second Vatican Council. In these prayers also known as the universal prayer or prayer of the faithful the assembly prays for the Church, the world, and the local community. As the name prayer of the faithful reminds us, these intercessions are a privilege of the baptized, which is why any catechumens are dismissed before the Creed and the intercessions. In baptism, we become members of a royal priesthood, and what do priests do? They intercede; they pray. In standing to pray to God as a community, we are living out our royal priesthood. The intercessions at Mass usually follow a clear pattern, moving from general to specific needs. We pray for the whole Church. We pray for the world and for our nation. We pray for our local community, for those who have died and for all the sick and afflicted. In our united prayer, we reach beyond ourselves and our own needs and grow in awareness of and compassion for the needs of others.
