This is a special appeal we make each year to our parishioners for our own parish. Numerous repairs and improvements anticipated in the near future necessitate rebuilding our contingency fund. Our annual collection enables us to do this. Please write down your four-digit envelope # (found to the left of your name on your church envelopes) - example #1234. Goal $100,000. Your generosity to this important collection is appreciated. There are letters/ envelopes at the entrances. The rectory will be closed Mon., Oct. 13th for Columbus Day. Emergency calls only. Program From Bonnets to Bell Bottoms: A Century of Connecticut Fashion Karen DePauw from the Connecticut Historical Society will explore the clothing of our past. Karen specializes in the history of costumes and textiles and the connections between society and clothing. Come see what has changed and what has stayed the same through 100 years of fashion history, from 1860s to the 1960s. Karen invites you to contribute to the discussion by bringing a favorite garment and sharing your memories. Please join us for this informative program. Members and guests welcome. The Women s Club 50 th Anniversary book of history and highlights of the Spiritual, Social and Charitable projects accomplished throughout the years will be available for purchase at the meeting. Holy Spirit to Host Elisabeth Von Trapp Holy Spirit Church announces a concert by Elisabeth von Trapp on Friday, October 24 th at 7:00 p.m. Elisabeth is the granddaughter of the legendary Maria and Baron von Trapp, whose story inspired The Sound of Music. All are invited to the concert at Holy Spirit Church, 183 Church St., Newington CT. A free will offering will take place during the concert. In honor of Mary, Queen of Peace, the rosary will be prayed every Monday at 12 Noon. Our Lady, Queen of peace, pray for us!!! 40 Days For Life Prayer Vigil will be held every Wednesday, at Incarnation Church from September 24th thru November 2nd after the 9am Mass in our Blessed Sacrament Chapel. On Thursday, October 16th there will be Adoration after the 9am Mass until 4:30pm in the Chapel. 4 Page Four 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time...October 12, 2014 Youth Ministry: Youth Ministry will gather on Sun., Oct. 19th from 6:30-8:00 pm in Fr. Crawford Hall. We welcome all high school aged students! A reflection to pray on: Consider being a mentor for our Middle School youth and our high school youth Confirmation community for Our program is gender based and we are in need of faithful men and women to be a part of our team. All members of our team undergo a background check and attend a Protecting of God's Workshop so that we can be in compliance with the Archdiocese of Hartford. Let us take a stand and bring the Good News to our young people who indeed need models of faith. Our program is innovative and our youth need your faith to encourage them to live the Catholic Christian life. Faith Formation: Grades 1-6 will meet at Emerson Williams on Saturday, 10/18 at 9am. Parish Family Home communities will meet at the scheduled times. Middle School Faith Formation: Grade 8: Tues. Oct. 21st & Grade 7: Wed. Oct. 22nd. Classes begin at 6:30pm & end at 8pm. Students should arrive in Fr. Crawford Hall by 6:20pm. Faith Formation for Kindergarten is optional and begins Saturday, November 1st at Emerson-Williams at 9am. Children must be registered to begin on the first day. Last day to register is Friday, October 24th. 5 Page Five 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time...October 12, 2014 A Weekly Bible Study 28 th Sunday in Ordinary Time Isaiah 25:6-10 These days celebrations and gatherings seem to be focused around the consumption of food. There s no denying that we all love a good repast. Long after everyone has gone home will we remember the connections and conversations, or the delightful delicacies? The prophet Isaiah sets the table of our imagination with a tangible reality: the rich and sumptuous banquet the Lord will provide for all people. This imagery will offer hope to a downtrodden, exiled people. For the Israelites exile was a tangible reality marked by devastation and deprivation. The hope they needed would have to be cast in a powerful image to free at least their hearts from so terrible a bondage. Isaiah is assured in the depths of his heart that God will deliver Israel from its oppression. And not only will the veil of death be lifted and tears wiped away, the people will celebrate with feasting and thanksgiving. We have that same assurance as we approach the Eucharistic table. In the Paschal Mystery we celebrate, Jesus has removed the veil of death and given us the hope of eternal life. We cannot help but celebrate as we gather around that table as Body of Christ. We cannot help but rejoice as we are released from the exile of our sin and separation. The Eucharist we receive is but a foretaste of the heavenly banquet we will enjoy for all eternity. For the Israelites, banquet was a powerful image of the rejoicing they would experience in deliverance from exile. For us the Eucharistic banquet, far more than an image, is a powerful reality breaking forever the bonds of sin and death. As Isaiah spoke for his people, we join in that chorus so beautifully rendered in today s reading: This is the Lord for whom we looked; let us rejoice and be glad that he saved us! In this and every Eucharist let us rejoice and be glad as we behold My Lord and my God. The book is a beautiful tribute to the women of our parish who have generously given their time, talent and energy in support of Incarnation Church, the Catholic community and people in need of our help. This drive helps fund activities such as the Special Olympics.

6 Page Six 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time...October 12, 2014 COME TO THE FEAST On this mountain, the Lord of hosts / will provide for all peoples / a feast of rich food and choice wines (Isaiah 25:6). That s what Isaiah tells us today. God is putting together a huge party for all peoples, to wipe away / the tears from every face (Isaiah 25:8). And what does Jesus tell us? The reign of God, he says, may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son (Matthew 22:2). When the guests didn t come, the king had his servants go out into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you find (Matthew 22:9). We are called to deliver that invitation. One of the themes woven into today s liturgy is that of divine generosity. Asleep to reality, people often think they have earned what they have. In our better moments, though, we know that all our gifts even the spiritual gifts come through God s generosity. Our vocation is to invite people, to remind them the tickets aren t for sale. We can only show up and say thank you. TODAY S READINGS First Reading On this mountain the LORD will make for all peoples a feast of rich food and choice wines (Isaiah 25:6-10a). Everyone from Doestoevsky and Shakespeare down the line to Seinfeld has used the sacrament to tragic or comic effect or to reveal aspects of character otherwise hidden. All of this theater, from world classics to slapstick, has had a numbing effect on our own expectations, and has skewed how the culture looks at us and our struggle with sin and forgiveness, hope and healing. Yet the artists are on to something. The reconciliation chapel is a place where hearts are laid bare, where honesty is the watchword, and people confess their deepest needs. It is also a place of rebirth, or at least realignment. It is, like the baptismal font, a place where something dies, and where something else is born. Today, although literature has barely caught up, the place is usually not the dark and gloomy cabinet of old; rather it is a chapel that speaks of peace, serenity, and the comfort of a welcome home. People in one parish were astonished recently to see their children skipping with delight as they left the place of their first confession. We have to wait a bit for world literature to catch up with this reality, but at least we can experience the joy of penance, the thrill of a new beginning, the assurance of God s love. 8 Page Eight 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time...October 12, 2014 Church of the Incarnation Sponsor Essay I have chosen my lovely aunt to guide and accompany through my exciting journey of confirmation. When I was told to choose a sponsor, she immediately came to mind. Ever since I was little, my aunt has been someone I can turn to for anything and everything. One of the things I admire most about my aunt is her ability to get things done, but also make time for fun. I think that having someone next to me who knows how to get things done and have a good time was an important component in my confirmation journey. I trust my aunt with my life and I know that she will never let me down, she s like a second mother to me. In times of sadness, I have turned to her and in times of happiness and joy she has been by my side. It s an honor to have her standing next to me when I get confirmed. I think it s always important to have someone in your life that you can love, trust, and turn to them for anything and that is my aunt. Her bright, understanding personality reassures me that no matter what, she will always be there for me, as I will be there for her. Being confirmed is an exciting experience that I want to have my aunt by my side for. When I look back at memories with her all I can do is smile and thank God for blessing me with this wonderful woman in my life. I am truly blessed to call her my aunt. This is why I have chosen my aunt to be my sponsor on my journey of confirmation and to guide me to through the path of God and make a positive influence in my life.
