New Day Bereavement Support: Tuesday, May 1st, 1pm rectory. Please note change of day. First Communion rehearsals for the May 5th First Communion will be held on: Wednesday: May 2nd from 3:30-5:00pm and Friday. May 4th from 3:30-5:00pm both in Fr. Crawford Hall. Both rehearsals are mandatory! 25 children will receive First Holy Communion at 10am on May 5th. HomeFront Day: Saturday, May 5th - 8am-5pm, however you can split the day and do a morning session or an afternoon session. Project sponsored by Homefront & the Office of Urban Affairs of the Archdiocese. Parishes all over the state accept a project to repair and fix up the home of a needy family. We need workers with a variety of skills as well as unskilled workers. You must be at least 16 years of age, but young people ages may work with a signed release from their parents, and supervision. The release form is available at the rectory which will be mailed to those under 16. 5 Page Five Fifth Sunday of Easter..April 29, 2018 A Weekly Bible Study 5 th Sunday of Easter John 15:1-8 Time-lapse photography offers us a unique glimpse into the workings of plant life. We may observe fragile tendrils of a vine as they reach out and wrap themselves around other branches, embracing and holding them tight in the process. It is no coincidence that Jesus uses the very same imagery to detail his relationship to the Father and his life within us. Let us examine some of the details of this analogy. Jesus speaks of his Father as the vine grower, of himself as the vine and of his disciples as the branches. These are more than just familiar images. There are mutual responsibilities within this unique connectedness. The Father creates and sustains the life of the vine. The Son embraces, cares for and nurtures his own, his branches. We not only remain secured to the vine, we draw from the very life of the vine to bear fruit. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing. The branch cannot survive unless it is firmly attached to the source of its life. There is more to this analogy than a relationship of intimacy between Christ and his followers. This image suggests an integration of the disciple into the very life of Christ. The follower not only draws life from the vine, but must cultivate that life and, as Jesus says, allow the Father to prune the branch. We draw from the divine nourishment as we nurture our inner life with personal prayer, Scripture study, worship and sacraments. The follower who draws life from the vine must also bear fruit for others. In his letter to the Galatians, St. Paul enumerates these fruits: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. The health of the branches is evidenced in the fruit it produces. Bearing fruit is our way of giving glory back to the Father. It is as simple as the everyday images that Jesus uses to speak of the kingdom of God: We draw our life from God and our nourishment from his Son that we may bear the fruits of his Spirit.

With your generous donations, the 6th Grade Faith Formation Community of Filomena Marinelli & Paola Houlihan were able to raise $500 for Wethersfield native Father Rick Frechette's hospital in Haiti. 7 Page Seven Fifth Sunday of Easter..April 29, 2018 LIVING BRANCHES The Gospel and second reading for this Fifth Sunday of Easter emphasize the need for us to remain in Christ, and he in us. This shared life finds expression in the image of the one vine and many branches. We become living branches of the vine, members of the Body of Christ through baptism, Eucharist, and confirmation, sacraments of sharing God s own life. The First Letter of John describes the fruit of this vine as active love of neighbor: And his commandment is this: we should believe... and love one another (1 John 3:23). Our first reading from Acts shows us an example of someone who shares in Christ s life in the person of Saint Paul. Paul s fearless witness, even at the risk of his life, is proof to everyone that the risen Lord s Spirit truly fills him with life and is bearing fruit in him. TODAY S READINGS First Reading The church was being built up, and grew in numbers (Acts 9:26-31). Psalm I will praise you, Lord, in the assembly of your people (Psalm 22). Four holy days of the church calendar were keyed to the legal year. On these days, rents were due, clergy and servants were paid, and contracts and leases would begin or end. The term days were Pentecost (called Whitsunday), the Feast of Saint Martin on November 11 (Martinmas), the Feast of the Presentation on February 2 (Candlemas), and August 2 (Lammas), a harvest festival. On Lammas day, the first loaf of bread from the summer wheat harvest was given to the village priest. After the Reformation, which swept the Catholic festivals away, the term days were gradually detached from the old feasts. It was only in 1990 that the term days were anchored on the 28th of February, May, August, and November. Today the old Scottish universities are the last hold-outs, still naming their terms or semesters after the old festivals. Scottish students today may not know about the liturgical year, but they still call the fall term Martinmas, and the spring session Candlemas.
