Cost: $10 per adult & $25 per family (children under 12). Tickets sold at the door. Prayer Shawl Ministry: Wednesday, September 12th at 9:30am in Fr. Crawford Hall. Men s Association: Wednesday, September 12th at 7pm in Fr. Crawford Hall. The Women s Club annual membership drive is currently underway. Membership is open to all women beyond high school age. Last week letters were mailed to current members. Copies of the membership application are also available at the entrances to the Church. Dues can be mailed in the return envelope included with the membership letter or brought to the Membership Tea on September 20th. Clothing/Coat Drive: The Wethersfield Knights of Columbus Council 4193 will hold a clothing/coat drive September 15th & 16th. Gently used clean clothes/coats will be collected at the west parking lot before and after the 5pm Mass on Sat., Sept., 15th & Sun., Sept., 16th before/after 8:30am & 10:30am Masses. The clothing will be donated to a local recycler for re-distribution. Coats will be collected separately for Weth. Social Services. Thank you! This book will be available at all Masses Sept., 29/30. 7th and 8th Grade Faith Formation: Classes for the new school year are starting up soon! 7th grade will meet on Wed. Sept. 26th, and 8th grade will meet on Tues. Sept. 25th. Please have students arrive in Father Crawford Hall at 6:20. Class runs from 6:30-8:00. Crawford Hall, an informational gathering will be held for all present 9th graders considering making the commitment to begin the journey toward the Sacrament of Confirmation which will take place in the Fall of The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated at The Church of the Incarnation on Sun., October 14th, 2018 at 2pm with Mass. The Very Reverend James A. Shanley, Episcopal Vicar will preside. NEW DATE: CATECHIST/ FACILITATOR TRAINING. Opening Day Mass All students in Grades 1-6 are invited to attend our Opening Day Mass on Sunday, September 23 at 10:30 a.m. Let us start off the year joyfully in the presence of our Lord in the Eucharist and celebrate the gift of our Faith! Parent Workshop We will also offer a workshop for parents to introduce our new curriculum on Monday, October 1 from 7:00-8:00 p.m. in Father Crawford Hall. 5 Page Five Twenty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time..September 9, 2018 A Weekly Bible Study 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time James 2:1-5 The sweeping theological language in the letters of Paul and Peter often overshadows the simple constructs offered by James. With a rather folksy style, the Letter of James is as practical as it is simple. It is refreshing to hear words that we can easily understand. We may even hear echoes of the Sermon on the Mount. (Is this not an invitation to explore this wonderful writing even further?) It is one thing to comprehend easily the message of James, but as with Gospel truths, it is another matter to put it into practice. In today s reading, for example, he encourages us to show no partiality as you adhere to the faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ. James points out the vice and immediately sets the standard for our behavior: Jesus own fidelity to the will of the Father. This should be the guiding principle in all aspects of our Christian life. The illustration James uses portrays a striking picture of favoritism of the wealthy at the expense of the marginalized. What makes this act of discrimination even more detestable is that he casts it in the context of a religious assembly. Weren t these early Christians to be of one heart and one mind as Paul tells us in Acts? The favoritism portrayed in this letter is not the way a Christian community should behave. James offers yet another hidden truth in this writing: God has chosen the poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom. Perhaps it is really they who are not distracted by earthly concerns who can better focus on spiritual realities. We ask ourselves, what is it that we will actually take with us into eternal life? It will certainly not be the gold rings and fine clothes illustrated in today s second reading. In this letter James challenged the accepted values of the world in which he lived. He also called upon every succeeding generation to evaluate its treatment of people and its practices of discrimination. A timely letter for us today! We received a lovely thank you note from The Catholic Mission Aid Society thanking us for our most generous offering of $4,733 to support the Church s missionary work this year for the Society of African Missions. Please notify the rectory if you have a loved one who is terminally ill before it becomes an urgent matter. Fr. Moran prefers to offer the Sacrament of the Sick while your loved one is still able to understand the Sacrament clearly. Welcome members, friends and guests to an evening of the Dances of WWI, also known as the Ragtime Era. Kandie Carle and Marc Casslar members of the Vintage Dance Society will perform dances such as the One Step, Tango, Waltz, Foxtrot, Hesitation and more. They will include background information on the history of social dances of the era. With humor and grace Kandie and Marc will add insights into the manners, fashion and music of the era as well. 7 Page Seven Twenty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time..September 9, 2018 SEE BEYOND OUTWARD APPEARANCES The phrase Sunday best has lost much of its meaning in our society today. Some lament the loss of people dressing up for church on Sunday; others think it s a healthy sign that we re as casual in attire gathered before the Lord as we are elsewhere. No matter which school of thought on this topic we belong to, James would probably chastise us. In either case, we are still focused on external appearance, mistaking it for some sort of favored position before God. True, James criticizes the community that favors the rich and well-dressed while ostracizing the poorly clothed, but even more he criticizes the making of distinctions, making choices based on criteria that having nothing to do with the reign of God. James might turn our attention to the reign of God described by Isaiah, in which people are healed and the earth becomes ripe to bear fruit. Jesus today is focused on this reign of God, healing a Gentile man in a region hostile to his Jewish faith, not mindful of the man s origins or clothing or status or ability to repay. Isaiah, James, and Jesus in Mark s Gospel all call us to look more deeply to find where the will of God needs to be done, and has been done, on earth as in heaven. Summer break is over and there is much to accomplish in school and in the workplace. It s a venerable Catholic custom to assign patron saints to the trades and occupations of life. This is largely in the realm of popular devotion, and although from time to time the Vatican declares a saint to be patron of this or that, the process is free-wheeling and just about uncontrollable. Still, there is a saint for almost any purpose, whether you are on death row (Dismas), having eye trouble (Lucy), or pursued by poisonous toads (Hubert). Medieval guilds would often associate themselves with heavenly patrons, so Saint Joseph has the carpenters, Thomas More the lawyers, and physicians get Saint Luke. If you re stuck in the airport, St. Joseph of Cupertino is on call since he was said to rise off the floor when he prayed, and if you re in a long line at the ATM, Saint Anthony Claret is for you. In recent years, the Vatican has from time to time assigned a new patronage, as when Saint Aloysius Gonzaga was named the patron of HIV-AIDS patients, since as a young Jesuit novice he had cared for his fellow novices during a terrible plague. Anything that matters to us nation, parish church, occupation, illness can have a patron, and it is an aspect of Catholicism that has enormous appeal. To believe in the communion of saints is to know that the ties that bind us as a communion do not unravel with death, and that when we stand before life s struggles, we do not stand alone. A Protecting God s Children Virtus Training Session will be held at Incarnation on Tuesday, September 18th from 6-9pm in Fr. Crawford Hall. All volunteers in various parish ministries that have any involvement with youth are required by the Archbishop to receive a onetime three hour training session regarding child abuse as provided by an Archdiocesan trained facilitator. Basketball: We have been advised by the Office of Safe Environment and the Office of Education, Evangelization and Catechesis for the Archdiocese of Hartford that parishes will be taking a year off from basketball this year.
