4 Page Three Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time...February 11, th and 8th Grade Faith Formation: A retreat will be held for 7th and 8th graders on Sunday, Feb. 11th in Father Crawford Hall. The girls from both grades will meet from 12:00-3:00 pm and the boys will meet from 4:00-7:00 pm. This retreat will serve as class and is a required component of their program. There will be no Faith Formation at Emerson-Williams on Saturday, February 17th because of the winter recess. Fr. Crawford Hall communities will meet at designated times. Thank you to all Faith Formation communities for sharing the gift of love by supporting St. Gerard's Center for Life. Diapers, wipes and baby blankets were collected and brought to the center. What a gift of love!!!! Youth Ministry will gather on Sunday, February 18th from 6:30-8pm. All High School aged kids are invited and most welcome to join us. Children s Liturgy of the Word will take place on Sunday, February 25th, 10:30am Mass. Join us for refreshments in Fr. Crawford Hall. New Day Program Bereavement Support Group: If you are saddened by the loss of a loved one, then you need to give yourself time to work through the natural process of grieving. The New Day Program, The Journey from Grief to Healing will begin Monday, February 19th. at 1pm in Fr. Crawford Hall. This program continues every Monday. It is an excellent program written by Sister Mauryeen O Brien. Noranne Wamester, M.A. Pastoral Associate, will facilitate the program. 5 Page Four Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time...February 11, 2018 A Weekly Bible Study 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time Leviticus 13:1-2, and Mark 1:40-45 Leprosy in ancient times was somewhat akin to our modern day Ebola. Isolation of the patient was vital. And for the ancient Israelites who had a strong corporate identity, alienation from the community was especially disconcerting. As if the disease was not humiliating enough, the leper had to announce his uncleanness to those around him. The purity laws described in the Book of Leviticus were intended not only to separate the clean from the unclean, but the sacred from the profane. It s no wonder that it was the priest who had to verify the cleansing and admit the leper back into fellowship. It was also believed that the leprosy was the result of sin. Spiritual uncleanness disqualified people from participating in community worship. More humiliation! In today s Gospel Jesus encounters a leper who begs the Lord to make him clean. With the leper s social, physical and psychological baggage, it will take a God moved with pity to remove the bonds of humiliation, pain and suffering. But there is a strange twist as this brief story comes to an end. Following his healing, the leper does not obey the command of Jesus to tell no one anything. * Can we blame this man for wanting to shout his good fortune from the housetops? Would that, in fact, make his cleansing invalid as he is not even allowed to tell the priest? Mark tells us that following this encounter Jesus remained outside in deserted places as it was impossible for him to enter a town openly. Has Jesus now become the outcast, putting himself outside of the community, assuming the place of the lepers he healed? Has he taken upon himself the suffering of all humanity? As this Gospel leaves us with many questions worth pondering, this week continue the conversation with God. *This is the Messianic secrecy motif, a prominent feature in Mark s Gospel. 7 Page Six Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time...February 11, 2018 GIVE GOD THE GLORY A curious feature of the first half of Mark s Gospel is the pattern of Jesus working a miracle, then telling the recipient of the miracle to keep still about it. Many theories have been offered: Mark is setting the stage for the great secret revealed when Peter will proclaim Jesus the Messiah at Caesarea Philippi; more skeptical commentators offer that Jesus, fully aware of human nature, knew that the way to spread the news was to tell people to keep it secret. The insight into this secretkeeping that serves us well, however, is that Jesus was initiating his public ministry according to the pattern that Paul describes. He was doing it for the glory of God not for his own benefit, but for that of all. Paul would later write in Philippians that Jesus humbled himself to become like us. And we see this humility at work in today s healing of the leper. Jesus is trying to reveal the presence of God s reign among the people, not so that he himself might receive the glory, but so that God would be glorified through him. Imitating this pattern, which Paul encourages the Jewish and Greek Christian factions in Corinth to do, still serves us well today. In Hawaii, the bacterium that causes leprosy probably entered from China in the mid-1800s, and the native islanders were susceptible to the dreaded disease. In 1866, the government literally dumped the sufferers on a remote and virtually inaccessible island peninsula with towering cliffs. Thrown off ships into the sea, the sick people were told to swim for the beach and head for caves, and for seven years the only supplies were similarly cast into the sea to drift ashore. It was then, 1873, that a thirty-three-year-old Belgian priest, Damien de Veuster, went voluntarily to Kalaupapa. Before long, he cajoled the government into funding his mission and its hospital, built a village with proper homes and sanitation, and recruited Mother Marianne Cope to bring sisters from Syracuse, New York, to nurse the sick. Damien, who eventually died of leprosy, has been canonized, and Mother Marianne as well. Although leprosy has been curable since the 1940s, today a few patients remain in their lifelong home, now a national historic site. The peninsula is still utterly isolated from the outside world, and the speed limit for the few cars there is 5 mph since there s nowhere to go! The hospital is still well-staffed and equipped, but access is regulated and visitors must take an official tour, often involving a descent down the cliffs by Molakai mule. There are few places on earth that evoke the healing power of Jesus, or our call to follow the Healer, more than Damien s beloved island mission.

8 Page Seven Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time...February 11, 2018 Lenten Mass Schedule: During Lent daily mass will be celebrated at The Church of the Incarnation at 9am Monday-Saturday excluding Holy Thursday, Good Friday & Holy Saturday. For your information, Christ the King Parish will celebrate daily mass during Lent at 7:30am at Corpus Christi Church and 5:30pm at Sacred Heart Church. Christ the King Parish will celebrate Saturday morning Mass at Corpus Christi at 7:30am. Mondays during Lent will be Confession Day in the Archdiocese of Hartford. The Church of the Incarnation will offer confessions on Lenten Mondays from 7-7:45pm. Our regular confession schedule continues on Saturdays from 3:45-4:30pm. Lenten Regulations: Catholics ages 14 and older are to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays during Lent. The rule does not apply when health or ability to work would be seriously impacted. Catholics who have celebrated their 18 th birthday, but have not yet marked their 59 th are to fast on Ash Wednesday & Good Friday. On days of fast, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to individual needs but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed. The Men s Association wants YOU!
