This collection communicates the Gospel through Catholic social media activities which enriches our faith through podcasts, television, radio & print media. Half of all proceeds remain in our archdiocese. The Incarnation Women s Club will collect broken and/or new rosary beads to be donated to the missions. Carole Christensen, President There will be a representative from the Knights of Columbus here prior to the Masses this weekend to speak about their membership drive. Employment Support Group mtg. Tues., May 19th at 9:30am, in Fr. Crawford Hall. There will be a special second collection next weekend for the people of Nepal. Catholic Relief Services has already begun to embark on a major emergency response to this severe disaster and has committed funds to extended relief efforts. Please be generous.

In particular, we are most grateful to Filomena Marinelli who so beautifully organized this very sacred event. Filomena has done an outstanding job in directing our Children's Liturgy of the Word Ministry and attends to every detail with great devotion and love. Thank you to all of our presiders (ministers of the Word), catechists and assistants for your participation throughout the year. National Shrine of The Divine Mercy Red Lion Inn, Stockbridge, MA An Incarnation Church Pilgrimage bus trip to the National Shrine of the Divine Mercy is planned for Thursday, June 4, The Shrine is staffed by the Congregation of Marians of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary and promotes the message of The Divine Mercy. The Shrine offers Confessions, Eucharistic Adoration, Rosary for Life, Holy Mass, Chaplet of The Divine Mercy and Benediction. Blessing of religious articles and opportunity to venerate a first class relic of St. Faustina are also offered. You may visit the gift shop and the Stations of the Cross on the grounds. 4 Page Four Seventh Sunday of Easter...May 17, 2015 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Surprisingly, the church moved very slowly in claiming marriage as a focus of attention and care. Nearly everywhere in the Roman world, citizens agreed on how to celebrate marriage. Consent of the man and woman is what made a marriage valid in the eyes of the law, and although there was a traditional ceremony, it was homebased and optional. The ceremony was for showing the social status of the families involved (the procession ideally detoured through crowds), and for reminding the woman of her legal transfer from her father s control to her husband s. The big moment of the ceremony had nothing to do with vows, but with the bride s donning the yellow veil with red highlights that was the daily wear of married women. A wedding feast included soothsayers and animal sacrifice to the new household s gods. Christians found that distasteful, of course, but since marriage was a family matter, they could edit things out. The church was comfortable with this, and sometimes recommended that the couple seek the advice of the bishop. His permission was only required for the marriage of a cleric, or for a marriage Rome didn t recognize, such as between a free woman and a slave. There was no blessing, no liturgy, no priest. Christians followed the customs of the day, but they knew that custom and relationships were transformed from within themselves by the fact of their baptism. Outwardly, Christians married exactly as their pagan neighbors, but they certainly invested the usual gestures with a dynamic sense of Christ s presence. 5 Page Five Seventh Sunday of Easter..May 17, 2015 Weekly Bible Study 7 th Sunday of Easter Acts 1:15-17, For it is written in the Book of Psalms: May another take his place. As one engages in Bible Study, it is fascinating to explore Scripture s distinct numerology. Today s first reading offers us an opportunity. In Acts we read of the selection of the twelfth apostle to take the place of Judas. Surely eleven apostles could have carried on the work of Jesus, but it was necessary that the original complement be restored. Twelve is a very significant number in biblical theology, as are three and seven. Cited more than 180 times, the number twelve symbolizes completeness and wholeness, as well as the authority of God. The choosing of the twelve apostles is built on the foundation of the twelve tribes of Israel, derived from the twelve sons of Jacob. The church as the New Israel emerged from this foundation. The Hebrew Scriptures also speak of twelve patriarchs and a similar number of unleavened cakes to be consecrated each week by the high priest. In addition, twelve individuals were specially anointed for a sacred responsibility. Most familiar to us are Samuel, David and Solomon. The Book of Revelation is replete with references to twelve and its various multiples. For example, twelve gates encompassed the New Jerusalem, with a dozen precious stones adorning these gates. The dimensions of the holy city were derived from multiples of twelve. In chapter seven it is written that twelve thousand from each tribe would be saved and a similar number ordained to serve the Lamb. The Bride of Christ, the Church, is adorned with a crown containing twelve stars. Lest we think that numbers in Scripture lack meaning, are coincidental, or merely a human invention, let us look to the Holy Spirit. It is this Divine Wisdom who ordained and inspired these occurrences and, in a sense, connected the dots throughout biblical history to reveal the divine plan. 6 Page Six Seventh Sunday of Easter...May 17, 2015 OUR PRAYER FOR UNITY Last Sunday, we heard the final words Jesus spoke before his ascension into heaven, words recorded by Saint Mark. Today we listen to a portion of what has become known as Jesus final discourse from John s Gospel. Once again, the Lord s words contain a commissioning of his disciples for ministry to the world. One important part of this discourse is Jesus prayer for unity: Keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are one. As the Easter season comes to an end, a season that has seen us deepening our awareness of the Paschal Mystery, it is fitting that today we hear this prayer for unity among the Lord s followers. Let us celebrate the unity we have with other Christians and work together to heed the Lord s great commission to bring the Good News to our weary world. It is very evident through their words that it takes a community of believers to raise a child in the faith. Thank you grandparents, parents, godparents, sponsors, catechists, aunts & uncles and mentors for witnessing your faith. Their essays are just an amazing testimony to the beautiful faith and spirituality that resides in each and every heart of our teens. We as adults, can learn so much from them. Wamester, Pastoral Associate Confirmation Name Essay Saint Salvatore of Horta The saint I chose is for my saint name is Saint Salvatore. Saint Salvatore of Horta was born into a poor family in Santa Colomba, Gerona, Spain in His parents died while he was still very young, so he was forced to work as an apprentice shoemaker. When he turned twenty years old, set on religious life, he joined the Franciscan order. He soon was recognized as one whose prayers and blessings were granted by God. Hundreds of people would come to him everyday to be healed. He healed the blind, lame, and deaf. Brother Salvatore, as he was known, was called a miracle worker, often healing thousands in a weeks time. He died in 1567 at the age of forty-seven. He was canonized as a saint in Salvatore was known for his charity and humility. I will pray to St. Salvatore for family and friends in need of healing. One reason I chose Saint Salvatore of Horta is because my great-grandfather s name was Salvatore. Also Saint Salvatore was an apprentice shoemaker, and my other grandfather was a shoemaker. These two things spoke to me as I was researching Saint Salvatore. Another thing that made me chose Salvatore was that his feast day is March eighteenth. This is an important date in my life and in my family. All of these ties with my family made me sure that Saint Salvatore of Horta was the name I would chose.
