Mass will be held at 9am with Vocations Holy Hour after in the Chapel. THE INCARNATION PARISH PICNIC WILL BE HELD ON: SUNDAY, SEPT. 11TH FROM 1-4 PM. To promote community in the parish this event will be hosted again by the Men s Association. We will have a traditional picnic menu, dessert, entertainment, and activities for the children. To supplement the meal, salads will be provided by women of the parish. The traditional picnic menu will be served from 1-3:00 P.M. Please call John Ewaski at with the number of adults and children attending so we can plan for food and activities. The cost for the picnic is $10 per adult and $25 per family (children under 12). The event will be held in our air-conditioned Fr. Crawford Hall and seats will also be available under a cool, shady outdoor tent. We look forward to seeing you on September 11th. 3 Page Three 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time.August 28, th & 8th grade Faith Formation: Church of the Incarnation Elementary Faith Formation Grades K-6: Only families who have registered for the year Faith Formation will receive the mailing for the Emerson-Williams schedule that was mailed out this week. All present PARISH FAMILY HOME communities are filled. There will not be any more PFH communities formed. Families will be notified by the PFH catechist regarding their schedules only if a family has been registered. Our Faith Formation Program will begin at the elementary level at the end of September. Please consider answering Gods' call to become a catechist, a teacher of our Catholic Faith. The classes that meet on Saturday mornings at Emerson-Williams School have the following openings for catechists. 3 catechists are needed for Grade One, 1 catechist is needed for Grade Two and 2 catechists are needed for Grade Four. All who serve as a catechist must fill out a background check and attend a Protecting God's Children Workshop. This is mandated by the Archdiocese of Hartford as we are called to be in compliance for the safety for all children. Call Noranne S. All registered students will be receiving their welcome letter and schedule for the year in the mail this week. 4 Page Four 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time..August 28, 2016 Weekly Bible Study Looking back and moving forward As summer winds down and the new academic year is upon us, we pause to offer reminders and helpful hints for Bible study and reflection. Let us give ourselves permission at this juncture to be takers. Take yourself into the passage. Place yourself at the feet of Jesus as one who finds comfort, healing, enlightenment. Become a part of the crowd listening intently to the Lord, hanging on his every word. Respond to the Lord from this experience. Immerse yourself in the faith struggles and triumphs of the men and women of the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) and of those who are in the presence of Jesus. Take to heart the sentiments of the psalmists as they cry out in joy, anguish and gratitude. Take time to understand the passage. Consult footnotes and commentary to help put the passage in its proper context, enhancing its meaning. Take the opportunity to sleep on the Gospels as the monastics tell us. Prepare your heart for receiving the proclaimed word, particularly the Gospels, by reading the passage before bedtime. As the Sacred Word gracefully penetrates the subconscious, hear and respond to the Word more deeply when it is proclaimed at Mass. Take the reading with you throughout the day. Continue to ponder the Word and allow your mind and heart to be filled with God rather than the constant clutter that seems to reside there. Take a specific phrase with you as the reading is concluded. Listen for the prompting of the Holy Spirit who may speak a word of comfort, encouragement or chastisement directly to your heart. Continue to ponder this message throughout your day. Let it lead you into deeper self-knowledge, conversion of heart, prayer and action. Renewed and refreshed we return next week to our continuing study of the weekly readings. Weekly Reflection for the Year of Mercy Visiting the sick calls us to spend quality time with individuals in hospitals and institutions, as well as the homebound. A friendly visit may include conversation, reading services, offering to write a note or letter, and, of course, bringing the Eucharist. We can send flowers and cards to those who are infirm. We can also volunteer to drive patients to appointments, run their errands, help out with chores, cook and deliver meals to the infirm, and assist full-time caregivers. The infirm among us may also be those who have recently lost a loved one, those who are lonely and feeling estranged from the community, those of special needs who feel socially isolated.

6 Page Six 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time..August 28, 2016 HUMILITY Have you ever been in a group of people maybe on a tour, at a social gathering, or at church and discovered that you have just been talking with a well-known author, corporate CEO, great scholar, or politician? Your first thought is the hope that you didn t say anything to embarrass yourself; but your second thought is how much they seemed like such regular folks. What is it that makes people seem so regular? Today s readings give us a clue when they stress the importance of humility. It is so hard for us not to tell the first person who will listen how busy we are, how hard we work, how much money we donate, and how important our job titles are. We think these accolades make a difference to people, and if we don t tell them, how will they ever know? But if our actions demonstrate our values, people will recognize our worth on their own. The words of Jesus show us how much better it is to let someone else recognize our worth than to be embarrassed because someone did not. We see the shepherd s staff and immediately rich images from scripture come to mind, as well as the recollection that the first to respond to Christ s presence in our world were the shepherds. The staff is more than a walking stick; its crooked top is useful in snaring errant sheep but also in keeping the flock united. Bishops carry the curve outward, indicating their ministry to the wider flock, while abbots (and some abbesses, too) carry the crosier with the curve pointing in, indicating that their ministry is to the monastery alone. The crosier was once also carried by the pope, but was phased out centuries ago. You may recall that in pre- popemobile days, the pope was often carried around on a portable throne called a sedia gestatoria. Since he didn t do much walking, the need for a crosier was minimal. Pope Paul VI introduced the innovation of a walking staff in the 1960s, and everyone remembers Pope John Paul II s walking staff, not a crook, but a delicately sculptured crucifix. Thus, the pope carries a pastoral staff rather than a crosier. Precisely because the pope s ministry is universal, to the whole world, popes will likely leave crosiers in the hands of the bishops they commission for care of specific flocks.

8 Page Eight 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time..August 28, 2016 Church of the Incarnation Women's Club Installation -- Save the Date This year, the Women's Club Installation Ceremony will be held as part of the annual Membership Tea at 7 pm on Thurs., September 15th, in Fr. Crawford Hall. Due to several resignations among the women previously elected to the executive committee, a brief business meeting will be held at the start of the evening to elect members to fill those vacancies. Immediately after the election, all of the women taking office for will be sworn in during a simple, brief ceremony in Fr. Crawford Hall. This will be followed by refreshments & socializing. Women s Club renewal letters will be mailed in August, and the full slate of members up for election to the executive committee will be listed in the September Bi- Lines. Join Archbishop Leonard P. Blair to Honor First Responders at the 2016 Blue Mass Sunday, Sept. 11 th at the Cathedral of St. Joseph, 11am, Police, Fire, Emergency Responders, the Department of Corrections and other organizations who are in the service of protecting the public s well-being, will participate in an opening procession on Farmington Avenue in Hartford on Sept. 11th. It will lead into the Cathedral, the mother Church of the Archdiocese, where Archbishop Leonard P. Blair will celebrate the Sunday Liturgy. While this annual event will once again honor the courage, generosity, personal sacrifice and life-saving competencies of first-responders, it will also be an occasion to reflect prayerfully on our unity as one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
