This beautiful ministry gives children the opportunity to hear & understand the Word of God at their developmental levels. We welcome Presiders: Maura Buyak & Connie Morin and our Catechists: Rebecca Colello, Aleeta Jaemel and Ellie Kieselback. We are searching for an individual/family to co-host the refreshment portion of CLW with the Paruta family. Commitment is only once per month. 5 Page Four Twenty Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time...October 22, 2017 A Weekly Bible Study 29 th Sunday in Ordinary Time Isaiah 45:1, 4-6 In the Hebrew Scriptures it was not unusual for God to anoint a king to prepare him to bring about His divine plan. Today we read of the anointing of King Cyrus. What makes this scenario significant is that Cyrus is a pagan king. We might wonder: has God run out of other options, are there no Israelites faithful enough to be chosen? I am the Lord, there is no other God tells us. His message is essentially I can bring about my plan of salvation however I choose! The 8 th century king Cyrus the Great, founder of the Persian Empire (modern day Iran), is called by God for a more noble task. Though he knows God not, Cyrus will become the Lord s instrument for resettling the exiled Israelites, rebuilding their Temple and restoring their hope. God does indeed work in strange ways, choosing the unlikeliest of individuals. What God is saying to Cyrus is Yes, you are a mighty and benevolent ruler, but it is all because of me. You will use your power and your influence for my sake, not yours! The Lord not only chose Cyrus for an important role in his plan, he touched his heart with great compassion for the downtrodden people. In the Second Book of Chronicles we read: The L stirred up the spirit of King Cyrus of Persia so that he sent a herald throughout all his kingdom and declared in a written edict: The L, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and he has charged me to build him a house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever is among you of all his people, may the L his God be with him! Let him go up. Such humility and compassion from one who didn t even know the Lord! What does that say to us?! God can stir up the heart of any one of us for a unique role in his plan of salvation. We may not know God as fully as we d like or feel worthy of a noble calling, but God looks deeply into our hearts and sees one who can achieve great things for the sake of His kingdom. 7 Page Six Twenty Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time...October 22, 2017 POWER STRUGGLE Power struggles occur on every level of society, from the world stage to relationships at work, to our own homes. We struggle for position in the hierarchy of power: Who has power over whom? How do they wield it? What is the source of that power? What is the healthy response? In this Sunday s Gospel reading the Pharisees engage Jesus in a power struggle over whether Jews should show tribute to Caesar by paying taxes. Jesus response puts this and every struggle for power into perspective. In harmony with the words of Isaiah and Paul, Jesus teaches us that God is the ultimate source of all power the power of earthly rulers, the Pharisees, Jesus, the Church, and the power within ourselves. Simon and Jude TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION What makes the Eucharistic Prayers for Masses with Children different from the others? First, there is the intended assembly, which is described as comprised of mostly children of school age. There are three Eucharistic Prayers for Masses with Children available to us now in the missal. The first one has a very simple form, easily grasped by even a young child. The second has a great deal of participation by the assembly repeated sung acclamations. The third has a number of variations that can be tricky for a priest to handle if he hasn t prepared carefully. All of this work does point to a true treasure of our tradition: children are part of the Sunday assembly, precisely because they are baptized members of Christ s body. By contrast, the churches of the Reformation tend to look upon children as members in training, and see worship as an adult activity. Sunday school happens downstairs while the adults celebrate Holy Communion upstairs. In a phrase, that s not Catholic. Children belong to Christ and to the assembly. So, the desire to care for the children in the assembly, to draw them into the prayer, and to adapt our rituals and texts to their needs is deeply Catholic, a true pastoral effort to help draw everyone into the praise of God.
