4 Page Four Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord...March 24, 2013 A Weekly Bible Study Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord - Philippians 2:6-11 My name is Adam. We cannot help but bow in reverence before the mystery revealed in this first century hymn of high Christology (emphasizing the divinity of Jesus). As Christ humbles himself it is fitting that we also bow in humility alongside our Lord. For we must acknowledge that we are descendants of Adam. In inheriting original sin, we journey with Adam. But by the power and promise of Christ s death and resurrection we also journey with Jesus. A closer look at this truly profound passage from Philippians will uncover some subtle comparisons between Adam and Christ. In his great act of kenosis (emptying of self) Christ puts on the visage of a new Adam. Paul tells us that although Christ was God he did not deem equality with God something to be grasped. Is this not the opposite of Adam s desire to be equal with God? In Christ s supreme act of surrender he assumed his identity as servant of God and man. In Adam s arrogant grasp for divinity, he was banished from all God had prepared for him, losing his way. As Adam became filled with pride and made himself a master, Christ emptied himself becoming as a slave. Christ is indeed our model of humility and servanthood. Exalted by the Father it is to him that we bow. Though we walk a fine line each day between choosing Adam and choosing Christ, it is in the Lord that we find our true identity. It is in him that we embrace the Father s will. It is in him that we empty ourselves to be filled with his life. It is in our dying to self that we unite with him. And it is in our embrace of the hope and promise of resurrection that we come to share in his glory. My name is Adam and I walk with Christ. Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion -----March 24, 2013 The Lord GOD is my help, therefore I am not disgraced. Isaiah 50:7a Lenten Mass Schedule: Daily mass will be at 9am Monday- Saturday excluding Holy Saturday, March 30th. Corpus Christi will celebrate masses at 7am, and 5:30pm Monday-Friday. Please return all Easter Flowers envelopes by Easter Sunday. The 2014 Mass Book will be available for Mass and Candle bookings beginning on Wednesday, April 3rd at 10 am. We kindly ask parishioners to be considerate of others when booking multiple masses. Beginning in January 2014, our Sunday Mass schedule will be revised. Sunday masses will be celebrated at 8:30am and 10:30am only. Our vigil mass will remain at 5pm on Saturday. The Incarnation Parish Council came to this decision based on a number of factors. Lenten Regulations: Catholics ages 14 & older are to abstain from meat on all Fridays during Lent. The rule does not apply when health or ability to work would be seriously impacted. Catholics who are18 years old, but have not yet marked their 59 th are to fast on Good Friday. On days of fast, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to individual needs but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk &juices, are allowed. Archbishop Mansell has encouraged parishes to cooperate in the scheduling of masses and liturgical services to help ease pressure caused by the shortage of priests. Stations of the Cross will be held at Corpus Christi Church, the Fridays of Lent at 7:30pm with Stations of the Cross & Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Easter Communion Regulation: Catholics are obliged to receive Communion at least once between the 1st Sunday of Lent & Trinity Sunday. For the Season of Lent, The Sanctus (Holy, Holy) and Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) will be sung. They can be found in the Missal. 6 Page Six Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord...March 24, 2013 THE FACE OF JESUS In all the readings for this Sunday we can look at the face of Jesus. There are two Gospel passages, both from the Gospel of Luke. The first tells of Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey. Crowds greeted him with shouts of Hosanna! The second tells of Jesus departure from Jerusalem, carrying the cross on his back. The same crowds derided him and shouted for his crucifixion. We first see a face shining with glory, but in a few short days a face dark with blood and sorrow. Set between these two contrasting Gospel passages are equally contrasting readings from the Hebrew and Christian scriptures. Isaiah describes a suffering servant who willingly submits to beating and humiliation, not even turning away his face. He knows he belongs to God and will not be put to shame. Paul writes to the Philippians of Christ Jesus, the true Suffering Servant, who willingly emptied himself to become human. But this man, with a very human face, has now been exalted by God above all others. TODAY S READINGS Gospel at the Procession with Palms Jesus entry into Jerusalem (Luke 19:28-40).
