On Sunday, October 21, 2012, World Mission Sunday, and during this designated year as The Year of Faith, Kateri Tekakwitha will be canonized a saint in the Catholic Church by Pope Benedict XVI. She was born at the Mohawk village of Ossernenon which is now the National Shrine of the American Martyrs at Auriesville, New York. She is the first native American saint. A stained glass window in our Baptistry depicts the Baptism of Kateri by St. Isaac Jogues. We invite you to come into the Baptistry this weekend to view the window of the Lily of the Mohawks and offer a prayer of thanksgiving for your faith. Thank you for your response to our Annual Collection. We have collected $65,000 so far and are very grateful. 3 Page Three Twenty Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time...October 21, 2012 Children s Liturgy of the Word will be held this Sunday at the 9:30am mass. Presiders will be Filomena Marinelli & Kathy Stickley along with Michelle Moquin and Richard Milluzzo. New Day will meet on Monday, October 22nd in the rectory at 1pm. Grade 8 will meet on Tuesday, October 23rd from 6:30-8:00pm in Fr. Crawford Hall. Grade 7 will meet on Wednesday, October 24th from 6:30-8:00pm. Faith Formation for Grades 1-6 will meet on Sat., October 27th at 9am at Emerson- Williams School. Parish Family Home communities will meet at designated times. Faith Formation Needs We would still welcome a male catechist for 9 seventh grade boys. Please call Noranne Wamester at (860) Confirmation 2013: There will be a meeting of all 9th grade students and their parents on Thursday, November 1st at 7pm in the main church to discuss the program for beginning the journey toward Confirmation. The Confirmation mentors will receive a letter from Noranne next weekend regarding a mentor meeting. The optional Kindergarten Faith Formation program Little Lambs begins the last Saturday in October at Emerson-Williams. Call Noranne at (860) for info. Our 4 year old Faith Formation Pre- School program will begin at the same time. We are very happy to announce that we have our pre-school catechists (4 year olds). Parents are encouraged to register your child/ children. Call Noranne at (860) Retreat for Parish Ministers Fill Up Your Tank Day to be held on Tuesday, October 23rd from 9am-2pm at The Holy Family Passionist Retreat Center. Call (860) for info. Offering is $35.00, includes continental breakfast, lunch and Mass. Corpus Christi School will sponsor a 3K Walk-a-Thon and Fun Run at the school on Saturday, October 27th at 2pm. This event will raise money for the school and to will bring community together. The Sacrament of Confirmation will be administered at Incarnation on Tuesday, October 30th at 7pm with a Mass. Archbishop Henry J. Mansell will preside. We received a lovely note from The Office of Catholic Schools of the Archdiocese of Hartford thanking our parishioners for their generous donations to the HOPES Collection in the amount of $3,441.00

Thank you for understanding. Thank you to all those who gave blood to support the American Red Cross. 35 units of blood were collected. Incarnation will participate again this year by saying the rosary in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel on Wednesday mornings after 9am daily mass. Everyone is welcome to join us. Call (860) , ext TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In the eyes of many, the papacy is a peculiar institution. Still bedecked with some of the regalia of medieval princes, contemporary popes have worked to define their role in ways that give them influence over the world both within and outside the Church. The trappings of royalty, never really a good fit for the successors of Peter, could render a pope distant and irrelevant. On the other hand, the tendency of many to think of the pope as if he were the CEO of a modern corporation is also inaccurate. St. Gregory the Great, himself a pope, first called the pope the servant of the servants of God. He is first among equals among other bishops, who by tradition exercise significant authority within their own dioceses, not depending on the pope s authority. This arrangement often puzzles those accustomed to a top-to-bottom chain of command. History has seen popes of many styles, but most strive to live up to Gregory s definition. Perhaps today s Gospel puts it all into the best perspective: Whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. Pray for the pope this week.

6 Page Six Twenty Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time....October 21, 2012 THE HUMANITY OF JESUS CHRIST All three readings today support each in its own way, of course a reflection on the humanity of Jesus Christ and how that humanity played a key role in the drama of our salvation. Although not chosen specifically to coordinate with the other two readings, today s second reading does in fact carry forward the theme of Christ s humanity in a remarkable way. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews highlights the solidarity that exists between Jesus and us, precisely because in his human nature Jesus has known the same sufferings and testing that are our own experience. Because he can sympathize with our weaknesses, we can approach the throne of grace to receive mercy. For the author of Hebrews, the humanity of Jesus was an essential requirement for his redemptive death, as well as an invitation to us to find in Jesus someone with whom we can identify in our daily struggles. TODAY S READINGS First Reading My servant shall justify many, and their guilt he shall bear (Isaiah 53:10-11). Psalm Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you (Psalm 33). Second Reading Let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help (Hebrews 4:14-16). YEAR OF FAITH: OCTOBER 2012 What Is the Year of Faith? Meditation Since beginning his ministry as Peter s successor, Pope Benedict XVI often spoken of the need to rediscover the journey of faith in order to rekindle the joy and renew the enthusiasm that encountering Christ brings to life (Benedict XVI, Door of Faith, 2). Oct.11th marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of Vatican II and the 20th anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. From that day through the solemnity of Christ the King in Nov. 2013, Pope Benedict invites us to celebrate a Year of Faith. This Year challenges us, disciples baptized into Christ and his Church, to move beyond routine to relationship; to re-image our Catholic faith not as an intellectual exercise, but as a personal encounter with Christ, an encounter that blossoms into a living friendship with Jesus and a loving relationship with our neighbor. Important as official teachings are and this year we should rediscover these, too the pope suggests that we begin this Year by looking at faith as a lifelong journey undertaken with a joy that inevitably attracts others. As examples of a personal faith whose authenticity and enthusiasm have an impact on others, Pope Benedict will canonize two saints with American significance on World Mission Sunday, Oct. 21st: Native American Kateri Tekakwitha ( ), whose short life was a journey of selfless love; and Mother Marianne Cope ( ), whose love for Christ led her from Germany to Hawaii, where she shared Father Damien s ministry to those afflicted with Hansen s disease.
