An array of summer salads will be provided thanks to the women of Incarnation parish. Pony rides and a moon bounce will be available for the kids. Seating will be outdoors and in the air-conditioned Father Crawford Hall. Archbishop Daniel A. Cronin will preside. Wedding Anniversary Celebration: Couples observing their twenty-fifth, fiftieth or other special wedding anniversaries are invited to the Anniversary Mass on Sunday, October 16th at 2pm. Archbishop Mansell will celebrate the Liturgy at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford. Family, friends, and all married couples are welcome to attend. A brief reception will follow. A Family Perspective The mother in today s gospel persisted even when she was ignored and insulted. She would do whatever was necessary to bring relief to her child. Parenting is more than bringing life into the world; it is also about sacrificing daily for your children. 5 Page Five Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time...August 14, 2011 On November 27, 2011, a new English translation of the Roman Missal will be used to celebrate Mass throughout the United States. Did the U.S.A. need a new Missal? It all began in 2002 when a new Roman Missal, 3rd edition, was published in Latin for the Roman Rite. This Latin missal was given to all of us and is call the editio typica, meaning that it is the original or source document for all Roman Missals, whatever the language. Once a new edition of the Latin Missal has been published, the bishops must direct the translation of the Missal into their own language. The 2011 English Roman Missal, that will replace the missal now in use, is our translation of the rd edition of the Missale Romanum. At the beginning, our attention to some changes in the words of the prayers will offer us all an opportunity to improve our conscious participation in the Mass. The foreigners as Isaiah calls them, the Gentiles as Paul calls them, or the Canaanites as Matthew calls them are called to worship the one true God in prayer. As we listen to today s readings, perhaps we are tempted to ask: Why pray? The question is rhetorical; it is tantamount to asking why should friends talk to one another or people in love kiss one another. Prayer is a way of relating to God, a way of talking to God. The apostles had the opportunity to talk to Jesus in the flesh. We have the opportunity to talk to Jesus Christ in prayer. Our relationship with him must be enthusiastic; it cannot be faint-hearted. John Donne, a fifteenth-century poet, knew what the qualities of good prayer were. Donne asks God to treat him differently from most Christians. The poet does not want God to merely knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend, but also to break, blow, burn, and make me new (Holy Sonnets, XIV). It takes a dynamic faith on our part to come to God in prayer. As Jesus once said, Knock and the door will be opened to you (Matthew 7:7). It may take pounding the door down, but if we are as persistent as the woman in today s Gospel, the results will follow. Over the centuries, the Christian thanksgiving, or Eucharist, gradually took shape. While in the East the Eucharistic Prayers (called anaphora) took many forms, in the Roman Church there was for many centuries just one Eucharistic Prayer, called the Roman Canon (now known as Eucharistic Prayer I). Almost all Eucharistic Prayers include the same basic elements. They begin with thanksgiving and acclamation. Then there is an epiclesis, as the priest calls down the Holy Spirit upon the gifts. Then follows the institution narrative and consecration, as the words that Jesus spoke at the Last Supper are repeated. After the consecration, we remember in an explicit way all that Christ has done for us this is the anamnesis, or remembering. The prayer concludes with the offering, the intercessions prayers for the Church, our leaders, ourselves and a final doxology of praise. The reforms of the Second Vatican Council enriched our liturgy with additional Eucharistic Prayers, including both ancient texts (Eucharistic Prayer II is based on the most ancient of all existing Eucharistic Prayers) and new compositions.
