Mrs. Theodora Niver, Director of Music would like to expand our instrumental music program by purchasing handbells to enhance our Chime Choir. This addition would complement our liturgy celebration. Handbells add a new dimension to many parts of the liturgy & help us to glorify God. We invite your support which can be donated to in numerous ways, as a memorial gift to our church in honor of or in memory of or just a donation. Donors names & those honored/memorialized will be inscribed on an Honor/Memorial Board which to be displayed in our church. Donations of $50 or greater will have the name of their loved one on a plaque in church. Flyers are available at all church entrances. We will be showing The Star, a 2017 animated movie about the animals experience of the First Christmas. Included treats: Pizza, Popcorn, Desserts, a Nativity Story, and a craft! Nov. 17th, followed by a pizza social in Fr. Crawford Hall. The next class for 8th grade is Tues. Nov. 20th, & 7th grade will be Wed. Dec. 4th. Youth Ministry: Our next Youth Ministry gathering is this Sunday, November 18th from 6:30-8pm. All High Schoolers are encouraged and welcomed to join us as we get together for fellowship and fun!! Come check us out!! Confirmation 2019: The next class for our 9th graders will be this Sunday, Nov. 18th from 3:00-6:00 in Fr Crawford Hall. At this class, we will be collecting toiletry items (soap, shampoo, tissues, toothpaste, etc.) for Wethersfield Social Services to be available to residents in need.

5 Page Five Thirty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time..November 18, 2018 A Weekly Bible Study 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Mark 13:24-32 It s so easy to miss the message when we get caught up in the imagery. The apocalyptic writing that opens today s Gospel passage is startling to us as it is beyond our human experience. We can only imagine the darkened sun and moon, and stars falling out of the skies. As we are told in this Gospel, in those last days even the powers in the heavens will be shaken! Mark communicates to us three messages of hope and consolation in this passage. First, we are consoled by the assurance that the Son of Man, the messianic human who accomplished God s work on earth, will appear in power and glory to gather his faithful ones. Second, we are called to be vigilant and ready. Just as we are to interpret the signs within the natural world ( learn a lesson from the fig tree ), we are to be attentive to the spiritual signs of the Lord s coming. We are to live each day in preparation and anticipation of that coming. We are to tap into that kingdom of God within us that reveals God s unfolding plan for our lives. Third, we are reassured that the Word of the Lord is steadfast and eternal, even if heaven and earth pass away. With all of these assurances, why would we even worry about a cosmic upheaval? Mark tells us in the final passage of today s Gospel that the time of completion of God s plan of salvation is known only to him. Thank God! If we were in charge there would perhaps be no end to the cosmic upheaval! It is up to us to be awake and watchful as we live out our Christian lives within the kingdom of God on earth. Let us leave the apocalyptic imagery to the writers who continue to feed our love of drama. Let us not miss the message as we look beyond those things that will pass away, the powers in the heavens and the cosmic earthly battles, to envision the real Kingdom of God which we will enjoy for all eternity. 7 Page Seven Thirty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time..November 18, 2018 ENCOURAGEMENT This Sunday s Gospel is our final selection from Mark for this liturgical year. It is taken from the end of Jesus teaching in Jerusalem immediately preceding the account of his arrest and passion. In it Jesus gives his disciples hope to sustain them through his passion and death and any persecution or suffering that they would encounter after his resurrection. The words from the book of Daniel also provided hope and encouragement to the people of Daniel s time. The encouragement in these scriptures is meant for us as well, for none of us will escape tribulation in our lives. Followers of Jesus will be able to endure suffering with joyful hope, knowing that Christ s love will lead us along the way of discipleship and give us eternal life with God. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Those who lead the many to justice shall be like the stars forever (Daniel 12:1-3). Psalm You are my inheritance, O Lord! (Psalm 16). Second Reading Where there is forgiveness, there is no longer offering for sin (Hebrews 10:11-14, 18). Gospel Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away (Mark 13:24-32). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION November is a month of remembrance for the dead, and cemeteries have long been a focus for prayer. Our tradition holds great respect for bodily remains, since the body was created and redeemed by God, was once the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit, and has a destiny of life with God in glory. The funeral practices of the early church contrasted greatly with those of the pagans, who had a great dread of the dead body. The ancient Christian funeral liturgy ended with the relatives and friends giving a final kiss to the body. It expressed affection and showed their faith that the grave would not be the last word. This kiss horrified pagans, who thought that any contact with the dead was degrading. Every year on their loved one s birthday to life, the Christians would return to the place of their burial to mark their profound communion with those whose lives were hidden in Christ. Typically, they buried the dead with their faces turned toward the east, symbolizing the rising of the Sun of Justice, Christ, at the end of days. They were attracted to the catacombs or burial grounds just as we are today. They would often celebrate the Eucharist at the tomb. Before long, as soon as Christians were allowed to build places for worship, they relocated cemeteries from beyond the city walls to surround the church. This was not so much because the church made the ground holy, but because the bodies of the saints hallowed the ground on which the church was built, a subtle but beautiful difference. Advent Wreath Lighting Families in the Light As we approach the beautiful season of Advent, we invite our parishioners to participate in the lighting of the Advent wreath during the four weeks of Advent. The poster for the lighting schedule will be placed in the Narthex on the weekend of November 24/25. The Advent wreath is green in color and is a sign of new life. The circle shape reminds is that God's love for us never ends. The Advent candles signify the strong contrast between darkness and light. As the coming of the Christ Child draws closer another candle is lit, each candle dispelling the darkness a little more as we wait with great expectation for the birth of the Christ Child, the Light of the World. Let us together be LIGHT to one another. Again, we welcome you to light our Advent wreath at a Mass of your choice. When it is your time to light the wreath, please tell the celebrant/sacristan prior to mass that you will light it. We received a thank you note from the Superintendent of Catholic Schools thanking us for our contribution of $4, which will benefit the 41st Annual HOPES, (Help Our Parish Elementary Schools) Collection. Thank you for your kind and generous support! We also received a lovely letter from The Catholic Mission Aid Society thanking us for our generous contribution of $3, to support the World Missions.
