2 Order of Worship Prelude Allein Gott in der Höh sei Ehr ( Glory Be to God on High ), BWV 711 J. S. Bach Welcome and greetings Joe Novenson, senior teaching pastor * Call to worship based on 1 Peter 1 Leader: Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. All: In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Leader: He has given us an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade kept in heaven for us. All: Rejoice! Come into his presence with joy and singing! * Hymn of praise Alleluia! Sing to Jesus Alleluia! Sing to Jesus; his the scepter, his the throne. Alleluia! His the triumph, his the victory alone. Hark! The songs of peaceful Zion thunder like a mighty flood; Jesus out of ev ry nation has redeemed us by his blood. Alleluia! Not as orphans are we left in sorrow now. Alleluia! He is near us; faith believes, nor questions how. Though the cloud from sight received him when the forty days were o er, shall our hearts forget his promise, I am with you evermore? Alleluia! Bread of heaven, here on earth our food, our stay. Alleluia! Here the sinful flee to you from day to day. Intercessor, friend of sinners, earth s Redeemer, hear our plea where the songs of all the sinless sweep across the crystal sea. words by William C. Dix, 1866; Rowland Hugh Prichard, 1831; hyfrodol
3 * Prayer of adoration and The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Worship in the giving of God s tithe and our offerings Offertory My Eternal King Chancel Choir My God, I love thee; not because I hope for heav n thereby, nor yet because who love thee not must die eternally. Thou, O my Jesus, thou didst me upon the cross embrace; for me didst bear the nails and spear, and manifold disgrace. Why, then why, O blessed Jesus Christ, should I not love thee well? Not for the hope of winning heav n or of escaping hell; not with the hope of gaining aught, not seeking a reward; but as thyself hast loved me, O everloving Lord! E en so I love thee, and will love, and in thy praise will sing; solely because thou art my God and my eternal king. anonymous poem from 17th century Latin (translated by Rev. Edward Caswall); music by Jane M. Marshall * Gloria Patri 735 Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. * Prayer of dedication and thanksgiving * Scripture reading from Mark 7:31-37 Mark Newton (9:30) p in pew Bible and text printed in the bulletin Sarah Risley (11:00) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Prayer of preparation for the study of God s Word

6 Mark 7: Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis. 32 There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged him to place his hand on the man. 33 After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man s ears. Then he spit and touched the man s tongue. 34 He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, Ephphatha! (which means, Be opened! ). 35 At this, the man s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly. 36 Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. 37 People were overwhelmed with amazement. He has done everything well, they said. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.
7 What is Mark teaching us about Jesus? SERMON NOTES A Miraculous Healing in the Decapolis Mark 7: Jesus compassion extends beyond all boundaries. (vv ) 2. Jesus power brings complete healing. (vv ) Isaiah 35:4-6a: 4 Say to those with fearful hearts, Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you. 5 Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. 6 Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy.
