1 First Presbyterian Church of Arlington Heights A congregation of the Presbyterian Church (USA) Organized in 1855 Heritage When charity floods the soul and warms away the numbness, love strides towards higher and more worthy objects. Aelred of Rievaulx SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST ALL SAINTS SUNDAY NOVEMBER 6, :00 AM Choose love. Be the light. Change the world. First Presbyterian Church of Arlington Heights 302 N. Dunton Avenue Arlington Heights, IL

2 The prelude is your invitation to quiet preparation for the worship of Almighty God. GATHERING AS GOD S PEOPLE PRELUDE O the Deep, Deep Love Duane Funderburk First Pres Strings; Pam Orals, piano WELCOME Alex Lang CALL TO WORSHIP (based on Psalm 66) One: Make a joyful noise to God, all the earth; All: we will sing to the glory of God s name; One: we will give our glorious praise to God. All: Our God is a generous God. We offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving to our God. HYMN 336 We Gather Together Kremser CALL TO CONFESSION TC Anderson PRAYER OF CONFESSION Mighty God, every day you invite us to go beyond what we think is possible and move with you into the impossible. Too often we stay with what is safe. We worry about our own survival instead of the survival of others. We hold back our time, our energy, and our wealth because we believe that we must take care of ourselves first. You teach us that the way of the gospel is to put others ahead of ourselves. Forgive us for failure to learn and live that lesson. Forgive us for holding onto our money with tight fists, forcing others in our community to go without having their basic needs met. Show us the way of generosity. Give us the strength to suffer so that others might have what they need. Allow our hearts to desire what your heart desires. Forgive us and show us how to live as those blessed beyond measure. SILENT CONFESSION...in Jesus name we pray. Amen. WORDS OF FORGIVENESS GLORIA PATRI (Hymn 581) Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen. PASSING THE PEACE One: The peace of Jesus Christ be with you. All: And also with you. One: Let us share the peace of Christ with one another. COMMUNITY LIFE

3 HEARING GOD S WORD PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION TC Anderson FIRST SCRIPTURE READING Luke 21:1-3 (Pew Bible, p. 856) TC Anderson The Word of the Lord/Thanks be to God! SECOND SCRIPTURE READING Luke 12:13-21 (Pew Bible, p. 847) Alex Lang The Word of the Lord/Thanks be to God! SERMON The Science of Charity Alex Lang TIME OF SILENT REFLECTION AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (The Apostles Creed) Judy Hockenberry I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. HYMN 716 God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending Beach Spring GIVING THANKS TO GOD OFFERING OFFERTORY At the Edge of Tomorrow Ruth Artman Standing tall at the edge of tomorrow, eyes on the Master, His call to heed; Lord, we are ready, our spirits are thine, to follow where You lead! We will follow where You lead! Standing tall at the edge of tomorrow; It matters not what may lie in store, For we will dwell in the shelter of His love through tomorrow and forevermore! Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven! As we count our many blessings for the days that have been, as we leave the threshold, filled with awe for what lies ahead; May we soar like eagles, secure and unafraid! O God our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home! A thousand ages in thy sight are like an evening gone; Be thou our guide while life shall last, and our eternal home! Standing at the edge of tomorrow, Ah, May we soar like eagles! Hallelujah! Amen! Chancel Choir; First Pres Brass; First Pres Strings DOXOLOGY (Hymn 606) Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

4 THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION TC Anderson/Judy Hockenberry THE INVITATION THE THANKSGIVING One: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. One: Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them to the Lord. One: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All: It is right to give our thanks and praise. LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. WORDS OF INSTITUTION SERVING OF THE BREAD AND CUP (All are invited to receive Holy Communion. Please partake of the bread as it is served. We will hold the cup and drink together. All bread served is gluten-free.)
