1 First Presbyterian Church of Arlington Heights A congregation of the Presbyterian Church (USA) Organized in 1855 Heritage Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love. Mother Teresa SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY FOURTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST AUGUST 30, :00 AM 302 N. Dunton Avenue Arlington Heights, IL mail@fpcah.org
2 The prelude is your invitation to quiet preparation for the worship of Almighty God. GATHERING AS GOD S PEOPLE PRELUDE Rhosymedre Ralph Vaughan Williams Rich Leasure, organist WELCOME Judy Hockenberry CALL TO WORSHIP One: Who may abide in the presence of God? All: Who may live on God s holy mountain? One: All those who walk blamelessly and do what is right. All: All those who speak truth from their heart. HYMN 4 Holy God, We Praise Your Name Grosser Gott CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION Gracious God, you call us to be doers of the Word, not hearers only. You call us to love the world with your passion, and to let that love be expressed in justice, forgiveness, and peace. Forgive us when our hearts are constricted with fear and we do not let your transforming grace open us to the world you cherish. Forgive us when we honor you only with our lips and not with our actions. For your son was sent to be an example to us; but his example is one we do not always follow, for fear of being different or not accepted by others. Help us to step out each day in faith, not fear. SILENT CONFESSION in Jesus name we pray. Amen. WORDS OF FORGIVENESS GLORIA PATRI (Hymn 581) Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen. PASSING THE PEACE One: The peace of Jesus Christ be with you. All: And also with you. One: Let us share the peace of Christ with one another. COMMUNITY LIFE Alex Lang
3 HEARING GOD S WORD PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION FIRST SCRIPTURE READING James 1:17-18 (Pew Bible, p. 980) The Word of the Lord/Thanks be to God! ANTHEM Come Thou Fount arr. Glenda Macomber Andrew Orals, violin; Pam Orals, piano SECOND SCRIPTURE READING James 1:19-27 (Pew Bible, p. 980) Judy Hockenberry The Word of the Lord/Thanks be to God! SERMON Our Doing Can Be Found in Being Judy Hockenberry TIME OF SILENT REFLECTION AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (The Apostles Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. HYMN 708 We Give Thee but Thine Own Schumann GIVING THANKS TO GOD PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Alex Lang LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. OFFERING OFFERTORY It Is Well with My Soul arr. Glenda Macomber Andrew Orals, violin; Pam Orals, piano DOXOLOGY (Hymn 606) Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
