5 MARK 10:35-45 (NIV) 35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. Teacher, they said, we want you to do for us whatever we ask. 36 What do you want me to do for you? he asked. 37 They replied, Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory. 38 You don t know what you are asking, Jesus said. Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with? 39 We can, they answered. Jesus said to them, You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with, 40 but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared. 41 When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. 42 Jesus called them together and said, You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. HEBREWS 5:1-10 (NIV) Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent the people in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he himself is subject to weakness. 3 This is why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people. 4 And no one takes this honor on himself, but he receives it when called by God, just as Aaron was. 5 In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him, You are my Son; today I have become your Father. 6 And he says in another place,

6 You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek. 7 During the days of Jesus life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. 8 Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered 9 and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him 10 and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek. MESSAGE Rev. Peter Blank James & John and the Special Favor *SONG OF WORSHIP: WE ARE CALLED TO BE GOD S PEOPLE (Hymn #710) (VERSE 1) We are called to be God s people, showing by our lives his grace, one in heart and one in spirit, sign of hope for all the race. Let us show how he has changed us, and remade us as his own, let us share our life together as we shall around his throne. (VERSE 2) We are called to be God s servants, working in his world today; taking his own task upon us, all his sacred words obey. Let us rise, then, to his summons, dedicate to him our all, that we may be faithful servants, quick to answer now his call. (VERSE 3) We are called to be God s prophets,

7 speaking for the truth and right, standing firm for godly justice, bringing evil things to light. Let us seek the courage needed, our high calling to fulfill, that the world may know the blessing of the doing of God s will. BENEDICTION Rev. Peter Blank POSTLUDE On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand Organ Adam Mason In the pulpit today: Rev. Peter Blank is Knox s Temporary Supply Pastor. He and his wife Diana arrived in Spokane in August 2017 to help take care of Diana s aging father. Peter previously served congregations in central California, rural Nevada and NW Oregon. Peter has become bi-vocational he is both our pastor and a licensed Home Inspector for the Spokane area. Peter has a passion for learning and discipleship training. He is graduate of Pacific Lutheran University and Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary. With Diana, they have 5 grown children in their blended family scattered along the west coast; as pet lovers, they have two dogs and a cat. They love the Spokane area for outdoor hikes and lakeside fun.. Household Prayer: Morning Gracious God, keep me humble throughout the day. Help me to seek your wisdom as I stand in service to others.
