PRELUDE S T. ANDREW S Lutheran Church 1416 Broad River Road, Columbia, SC Ninth Sunday After Pentecost July 22, :30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. The Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW) is the red worship book found in your pew racks. Service music, indicated with a page number, can be found in the front portion of the book. Hymns, indicated by number, are found in the back portion of the book. Congregational responses are printed in bold type. b GATHERING b CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen If we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. Let us confess our sin to God who is faithful and just and who has promised to forgive our sin and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Silence for reflection and self-examination. Most merciful God, we confess to you that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not trusted you with our whole heart; we have not loved one another in deed and in truth. In your compassion forgive our sin and so uphold us by your Spirit that we may live and serve you in newness of life through Jesus Christ our light and our truth. Amen. With joy, I proclaim to you that Almighty God, rich in mercy, abundant in love, forgives you all your sin and grants you newness of life in Jesus Christ, our Lord. Thanks be to God. We remain kneeling as the pastor offers God s absolution and forgiveness. Following absolution we stand for the hymn, facing the processional cross as we begin.

GATHERING SONG: Oh, Praise the Gracious Power ELW Hymn 651 Stanzas 1-4, 7 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. KYRIE Cantor REFRAIN Cantor: For the reign of God, and for peace throughout the world, for the unity of all...refrain For your people here, who have come to give you praise, for the strength to live your Word...REFRAIN Following final refrain we sing: Cantor

HYMN OF PRAISE: Now the Feast and Celebration

PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. O God, powerful and compassionate, you shepherd your people, faithfully feeding and protecting us. Heal each of us, and make us a whole people, that we may embody the justice and peace of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. We sit. b WORD b CHILDREN S SERMON (11:00 a.m.) FIRST READING: JEREMIAH 23:1-6 1Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! says the Lord. 2 Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people: It is you who have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. So I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the Lord. 3 Then I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. 4 I will raise up shepherds over them who will shepherd them, and they shall not fear any longer, or be dismayed, nor shall any be missing, says the Lord. 5The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 6 In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: The Lord is our righteousness. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM 23: The following refrain will be sung first by the cantor and then by the congregation each time thereafter. The congregation is invited to sing the refrains printed in bold type. 1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not be in want. 2The LORD makes me lie down in green pastures and leads me be- side still waters. 3You restore my soul, O LORD, and guide me along right pathways for your name's sake. 4Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. REFRAIN 5You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil, and my cup is running over. 6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. REFRAIN SECOND READING: EPHESIANS 2: Remember that at one time you Gentiles by birth, called the uncircumcision by those who are called the circumcision a physical circumcision made in the flesh by human hands 12 remember that you were at that time without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. 15 He has abolished the law with its commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new humanity in place of the two, thus making peace, 16 and might reconcile both groups to God in one body through the cross, thus putting to death that hostility through it. 17 So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; 18 for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, 20 built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. 21 In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; 22 in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling place for God. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

We stand. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION The Holy Gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. GOSPEL: MARK 6:30-34, The apostles gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. 31 He said to them, Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while. For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. 32 And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves. 33 Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they hurried there on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them. 34 As he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. 53When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored the boat. 54 When they got out of the boat, people at once recognized him, 55 and rushed about that whole region and began to bring the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he went, into villages or cities or farms, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged him that they might touch even the fringe of his cloak; and all who touched it were healed. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON We sit. We stand and sing. HYMN OF THE DAY: Savior, like a Shepherd Lead Us ELW Hymn 789 APOSTLES CREED: Please turn to the back inside cover of your hymnal

We kneel or stand for the prayers. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Each intercession will end with Lord in your mercy, to which we respond: Hear our prayer. b MEAL b PEACE The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. We greet one another with a gesture of peace using these or similar words: Peace be with you. We sit. OFFERTORY ANTHEM: My Shepherd Will Supply My Need My Shepherd, will supply my need; Jehovah is his name; In pastures fresh he makes me feed, beside the living stream. He brings my wand'ring spirit back when I forsake his ways, and leads me, for his mercy's sake, in paths of truth and grace. Howard Helvey When I walk through the shades of death, thy presence is my stay; one word of thy supporting breath drives all my fears away. Thy hand, in sight of all my foes, does still my table spread; my cup with blessings overflows, thy oil anoints my head. The sure provisions of my God attend me all my days; oh, may thy house be my abode and all my work be praise. There would I find a settled rest, while others go and come; no more a stranger or a guest, but like a child at home.

We stand as the gifts are presented. OFFERTORY SONG: As the Grains of Wheat OFFERTORY PRAYER

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING It is indeed right, our duty and joy.we praise and join their unending hymn: The Great Thanksgiving concludes:.to you, O God, Father, Son and holy Spirit, be all honor and glory in your holy church, now and forever. Amen.

THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. We sit. LAMB OF GOD HOLY COMMUNION All are welcome to commune. Communion will be received at the altar rail by intinction; we receive the consecrated bread and dip it into the chalice. Those unable to partake of wine or wheaten bread are assured that the Church affirms our Lord s presence in, with, and under each element alone; however, gluten free wafers and grape juice are available. Please let the Pastor or Lay Assistant know of your need. COMMUNION HYMNS: Morning Has Broken ELW Hymn 556 Let us Break Bread Together ELW Hymn 471 We stand. POST-COMMUNION BLESSING AND PRAYER
