The Rite of Installation of Our Pastor On the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord January 11, :00 PM 1
The Congregation is asked to remain silent during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. Prelude Benedictus A. Rowley A Festive Intrada Dobrinski Please stand. THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The presiding minister addresses the assembly. Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God's mercy and forgiveness. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism. Water may be poured into the font as the presiding minister gives thanks. We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family. Through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By water and your Word you claim us as daughters and sons, making us heirs of your promise and servants of all. We praise you for the gift of water that sustains life, and above all we praise you for the gift of new life in Jesus Christ. Shower us with your Spirit, and renew our lives with your forgiveness, grace, and love. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. 2
GATHERING SONG 3
APOSTOLIC GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. KYRIE Kyrie eleison! Lord, have mercy. Christe eleison! Christ, have mercy. Kyrie eleison! Lord, have mercy. 4
CANTICLE OF PRAISE PRAYER OF THE DAY FOR INSTALLATION OF A PASTOR Almighty God, through your Son Jesus Christ you gave the holy apostles many gifts and commanded them to feed your flock. Inspire all pastors to proclaim your word diligently and your people to receive it willingly, that finally we may receive the crown of eternal glory; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. 5
Please be seated. WORD FIRST READING: Isaiah 42:5 9 5 Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: 6 I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, 7 to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. 8 I am the LORD, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. 9 See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM: 122 Prayed in unison I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go to the house of the LORD." Now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem. Jerusalem is built as a city that is at unity with itself; to which the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD, the assembly of Israel, to praise the name of the LORD. For there are the thrones of judgment, the thrones of the house of David. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: "May they prosper who love you. Peace be with- in your walls and quietness with- in your towers. For the sake of my kindred and companions, I pray for your prosperity. Because of the house of the LORD our God, I will seek to do you good." SECOND READING: 1 Peter 5:1 4 Now as an elder myself and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as one who shares in the glory to be revealed, I exhort the elders among you 2 to tend the flock of God that is in your charge, exercising the oversight, not under compulsion but willingly, as God would have you do it not for sordid gain but eagerly. 3 Do not lord it over those in your charge, but be examples to the flock. 4 And when the chief shepherd appears, you will win the crown of glory that never fades away. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 6
Please stand. The holy gospel according to Mark the tenth chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. GOSPEL: Mark 10: So Jesus called them and said to them, "You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. 43 But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many." The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Please be seated. SERMON Rev. Dr. Beth Neubauer Pastor, Emmanuel Lutheran Church Vienna, Virginia 7
Please stand. HYMN OF THE DAY 8
Please remain standing. RITE OF INSTALLATION OF THE REV. JOEL S. NEUBAUER Having been authorized by the church to install the Rev. Joel Stephen Neubauer, our co-worker in the gospel, as pastor, I now ask for certification of this call. A representative of the calling body addresses the presiding minister. After prayerful deliberation, we, of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Yorktown, of the Virginia Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, have called the Rev. Joel Stephen Neubauer as our pastor. I present him and this letter certifying the call. The representative gives the presiding minister the letter certifying that the call has been received and accepted. The representative moves aside, and the assembly is seated. A reading from John: Jesus said, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." (John 20:21-23) A reading from Matthew: Jesus said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:18-20) A reading from First Timothy: Set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. Attend to the public reading of scripture, to exhorting, to teaching. Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you through prophecy with the laying on of hands by the council of elders. Put these things into practice; devote yourself to them, so that all may see your progress. Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; continue in these things, for in doing this you will save both yourself and your hearers. (1 Timothy 4:12-16) The presiding minister questions the pastor being installed. Joel, in the presence of this assembly will you commit yourself to this new trust and responsibility, in the confidence that it comes from God through the call of the church? I will, and I ask God to help me. Will you preach and teach in accordance with the holy scriptures and with the confessions of the Lutheran church? Will you carry out this ministry in harmony with the constitutions of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America? I will, and I ask God to help me. Will you be diligent in your study of the holy scriptures and in your use of the means of grace? Will you love, serve, and pray for God's people, nourish them with the word and sacraments, and lead them by your own example in faithful service and holy living? I will, and I ask God to help me. 9
Will you give faithful witness in the world, that God's love may be known in all that you do? I will, and I ask God to help me. Almighty God, who has given you the will to do these things, graciously give you the strength and compassion to perform them. Amen. Please stand. People of God, will you receive Pastor Joel as a messenger of Jesus Christ sent to serve all people with the gospel of hope and salvation? Will you regard him as a servant of Christ and a steward of the mysteries of God? We will, and we ask God to help us. Will you pray for him, help and honor him for his work's sake, and in all things strive to live together in the peace and unity of Christ? We will, and we ask God to help us. The presiding minister addresses the pastor being installed. Joel, the office of pastor among the people of St. Mark is now committed to you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, make you complete in everything good so that you may do God's will, working in you that which is pleasing in God's sight; through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen. The presiding minister escorts the pastor to the place of baptism. A representative of the congregation says: You have been called to be among us to baptize, to teach, and to forgive sins. They proceed to the place of the word. A representative of the congregation says: You have been called to be among us to proclaim the good news. They proceed to the place of the meal. A representative of the congregation says: You have been called to be among us to preside at the Lord's supper. People of God, I present to you this man, our brother Joel, your pastor. Let us welcome him in the name of Christ. The assembly may offer acclamation with applause. 10
Please sit or kneel. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION FOR INSTALLATION In obedience to the will of God in Christ Jesus for us, let us not quench the Spirit, but rejoice always for the church, pray without ceasing for the world, and give thanks in all circumstances among God s creation. A brief silence Lord God, we rejoice for the new ministry of Pastor Joel among this congregation of your people. Guide him by Holy Wisdom to proclaim your gracious Word. Direct him by the Holy Spirit to extend your grace faithfully in baptism and in the body and blood of our Lord. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. Lord God, we rejoice for the existing and expanding ministry of your Gospel in the lives of your people of St. Mark. Give them joy in the love they share, hope in the peace they work to establish, and courage in the justice they seek in your name for their neighbors wellbeing. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. Lord God, we rejoice for the work of your church in all times and places. Comfort our bishops, Elizabeth and James, as they shepherd us in faith. Draw us into closer bonds of unity with the Lutheran World Federation, and in full communion with The Episcopal Church, the Moravian Church in America, the Presbyterian Church (USA), the Reformed Church in America, the United Church of Christ, and the United Methodist Church. And bless the gospel work of all congregations and their servants in the gospel of Christ. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. Holy One, we pray for the universe of your making, for this planet our home, and for the lives of all people. Teach us to worship and honor you by loving your image upon all humanity. Use our hands to accomplish your work: to nourish, shelter, heal, welcome and befriend your children in this world. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. Blessed Trinity, you form us from the dust of the earth to live with you in a relationship of love, light and life and we cannot know our future, yet we trust your goodness. For this gift of life, for your faith toward us in every moment, open our hearts and minds to endless thanksgiving. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. Into your faith-filled promise, good and gracious God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting your mercy in Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. Please stand. PEACE The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. 11
MEAL Please be seated. OFFERTORY ANTHEM Behold My Servant B. Bengston Isaiah 42: 1,6 Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights. I am the Lord, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you. I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations. Please stand. OFFERTORY HYMN OFFERTORY PRAYER Let us pray. Merciful God, as grains of wheat scattered upon the hills were gathered together to become one bread, so let your church be gathered together from the ends of the earth into your kingdom, for yours is the glory through Jesus Christ, now and forever. Amen. 12
DIALOGUE PREFACE 13
SANCTUS EUCHARISTIC PRAYER Hallelujah, O Alpha and Omega, First and Last, Beginning and End, for you reign, O Lord our God the Almighty; and we rejoice and exult and glorify you, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and his bride has made herself ready. We thank you for the Lamb, our true and good shepherd, our Lord Jesus Christ, who, in the night in which we was betrayed, took bread, blessed it, broke it and gave it for them to eat, saying, "Take and eat, this is my body given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me." Again after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks and gave it for them to drink, saying, "Take and drink, this cup is the new testament in my blood, shed for you and all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me." Remembering Christ's life, death, resurrection and ascension, we praise you, Lord, as servants with all who fear and love you, small and great. Send your Holy Spirit on these gifts of bread and wine that we may receive Jesus' body and blood in, with and under them; and grant us your grace that, clothed in the righteous deeds of the saints, we may be one body in Christ and for his ministry to all. Through him all honor and glory is yours, Holy Father, with the Holy Spirit, One God, in your holy Church both now and forever. Amen. 14
THE LORD'S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. Please be seated. DISTRIBUTION We believe our Lord s real presence is in the sacrament of Holy Communion. All baptized Christians are welcome to commune. Extend your hands over the rail to receive the bread. To receive the wine, wait for the chalice or take an empty glass from the tray, which will be filled from a pouring chalice. The prefilled glasses contain grape juice. We encourage you to bring non-communing children forward to receive a blessing. COMMUNION MUSIC Please stand. The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in his grace. Amen. 15
POST-COMMUNION HYMN POST-COMMUNION PRAYER Let us pray. Pour out upon us the spirit of your love, O Lord, and unite the wills of those whom you have fed with one heavenly food; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. SENDING BENEDICTION The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD smile on you and be gracious unto you; the LORD look upon you with favor and give you peace. Amen. 16

The words of the hundred thirty-third psalm are an exclamation of praise a celebration of the beauty of God s people working together in love toward the Lord and toward sisters and brothers. As I am installed for the ministry of Word and Sacrament among you, it is our shared calling in unity with one another that is worthy of praise and celebration a calling we share in the Word Made Flesh. Our unity reflects the splendor of heaven; it is my joy as your pastor to share in the united ministry we extend, through our lives and to our neighbors, for the good news of God in Christ Jesus our Lord! Your witness to faith in Christ and your commitment to the work of the Holy Spirit humble me. In my service as your pastor through preaching, teaching and pastoral care I am honored and I thank our God that here with you, with my family in unity with yours, the LORD has commanded the blessing: life forevermore. Thanks and praise to God! And to you: thanks and peace, Pastor Joel 18
