2 THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD Pastor s Message Dear Parishioners, The Solemnity of the Epiphany is when those who are without Jewish heritage celebrate the birth of Jesus. You see, Christmas Day is the fulfilment of the promised Jewish Messiah. The Magi are not Jewish and they come and worship him. This symbolized that Jesus would be the savior for all people, of every time and place. Jesus is truly a universal king and his dominion is everlasting. The transition from Jewish ways of thinking and identity happened when they were called Christians for the first time. This name stuck and we celebrate the core of what Christian means. Christian comes from follower of the Christ. The word Christ means Messiah in Greek. Those of us without Jewish heritage celebrate that Jesus is the savior of the world. Happy Epiphany! I want to thank all those who have generously responded to our appeal for end of the year giving and to help our revenues to keep up with our expenses. 3 Stewardship of Prayer & Faith January 6, 2018 Parish and School Holy Hour sponsored by Respect Life Epiphany of the Lord January 6, 2019 "They prostrated themselves and did him homage." The Magi were men of great faith. Their worldly posi on and power could have made them scoff at the sight of this humble infant. Their treasury of wealth could have blinded them to the true value of this child king. But instead these men placed themselves at the feet of Jesus in a gesture of complete submission. Then, as a sign of their devo on, they "opened their treasures" and offered this baby costly and precious gi s. Only a deep and sincere faith could jus fy such a surprising scene. Real faith o en runs contrary to worldly wisdom. Without the firm belief that Jesus was the Messiah, it would seem absurd to travel all those miles and part with all that gold, much less to bow down in the presence of a poor child. But the eyes of faith can see much more than the eyes of the world alone. The Magi understood that all the pres ge and possessions of the earth are nothing in comparison to the kingdom of heaven. They wanted to use their worldly wealth to give glory to the King of Kings, rather than for their own glory. Taking the Three Kings as models, we can examine our own lives. Are we willing to "travel" for our faith, leaving our comfort zone for the sake of the Gospel? Are we willing to share our "wealth" to glorify God? Are we willing to submit our desires and plans to the authority of Christ? As we begin the journey of this New Year, let us resolve to follow in the faithful footsteps of the Magi. Prayer for Epiphany Dear Jesus, though a newborn, the wise men knew your greatness. On a hint from the heavens, they traveled far from their places of comfort so that they could honor you. From their belief in your divinity, they gave amazing gi s, offerings that symbolized your life, power, and even your death. And because of a dream in the night, they altered their well-laid plans to return home in order to protect you. May we be so willing to honor, sacrifice, and obey, all for love of you, as we meditate on the meaning of this day. Amen. LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK We all have had the experience of walking into a dark room and searching for the light switch. If we are really unfamiliar with the space, anxiety, uncertainty, disorienta on, and even fear can easily arise. Once we find the light, all is illuminated and we are at peace. Our light has come into the world! The glory of God has been revealed! Today's feast of the Epiphany teaches us to look to our Savior, Jesus Christ, for the way to truly be the human beings we were created to be. He shows us how to priori ze our lives, order our rela onships, care for crea on, and live as daughters and sons of God. God's love and crea ve power is universal, transcending all races and na ons. Jesus brings the light of peace to a broken world that s ll struggles to understand itself and to you and I who also struggle to understand who we are. May we find ourselves overjoyed that we have found our truth and allow Jesus to bring light to the darkness of our lives! 3

4 THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD The song "We Three Kings" details the gi s of the Magi, but do you know what you're singing? "Born a king on Bethlehem's plan, gold I bring to crown Him again." This one is the most straigh orward - gold symbolizes the Kingship of Christ. "Myrrh is mine: its bi er perfume breathes a life of gathering gloom." Myrrh is an embalming spice. Already at Christ's birth, we have the symbolic reminder of his death. "Frankincense to offer have I. Incense owns a deity nigh." In many religious tradi ons, incense symbolizes prayers rising to heaven. In some pagan tradi ons, it is thought to help "call down" the deity. The gi of frankincense symbolizes Jesus' role as the Great High Priest, sanc fying the world through his sacrifice. 5 Stewardship of Time & Talent (Continued) January 6, 2018 Sandwiches for the Poor On the third Sunday of the month a er 9:30 Mass, families gather in the cafeteria to make sandwiches for the poor. We are in need of families to host a month throughout the year to help coordinate the set-up, sandwich making, clean up and delivery of the sandwiches. It only takes a couple hours on a Sunday morning to make a huge difference. It is a great way for you to come together with your family and show them the importance of helping the poor in our community. We would be grateful for any help you can give, even if it is for just one month. If you have any ques ons or would like to volunteer, please contact Sherri Doyle at ext. 208 or her at Sherri@saintvincents.org. Our next date to make sandwiches is January 20th. Please feel free to join others in the cafeteria and take that me to see what it is all about and ask ques ons. Stewardship of Faith Solemnity of the Epiphany It s the gorgeous Feast of the Epiphany. Time to trip a little light fantastic. That s right you! You are the lamplighter of your family, your class, your parish, your office, your work place. But look who I m telling. You already know this! You ve probably known all your life, or at least since your Confirmation, that you are the Light-Bearer, the one whose gracious and kind disposition is making this pilgrim path much easier for others. Mother Teresa begged us to be the living expression of God s kindness. That s you. Think of the charities that are able to continue their work because of your generosity. Think of the kind direction you ve given to help educate children in the faith. Think of the ways you have comforted the grieving, and visited the sick, and given food to the hungry. Think of your presence at Mass, and what confidence that builds in your parish community. Think of the ways you have prayed for the sick and dying. Think of the ways you have personally accompanied loved ones through their own transition from life to eternity. You can t see it, but you re your own constellation out there. You have no idea the people who have seen your Star-your warmth, your kind invitation to friendship, your help in times of need and been intimately drawn to the One who is Light from Light. Isn t it a great blessing to be part of the constellation of Christ? Every darkness that comes your way you transform into light. You are a luminous comet of forgiveness, joy, friendship, and expectant hope. And the day when you and Jesus see each other face to face? Step back. Nova, meet Super Nova. 6 January 6, 2018 St. Vincent de Paul Society The Fruits of Your Bounty Thanks to the generous dona ons you made to the weekly offering, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to help families in need in our area. We just want to tell you about one family we helped this past week. Nathan and Wilma have always taken care of their rent. Their son, a disabled vet with au sm lives with them. They live month to month, scrimping on food and clothing but need costly repairs to their car so that Nathan can get to work. Thanks to your generosity, the Society was able to help this family through the crisis. Their son will start ge ng veteran s disability soon and their livelihood will improve. Again thanks to you, we were able to help so many others who are in similar difficult situa ons. God loves those who love the poor.
