2 Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Pastor s Message Dear Parishioners, The parable from this weekend s Gospel is a stewardship story. The fourth petition of the Our Father is related to the story when it says, Give us this day our daily bread. In stewardship language this means that God provides for all that we live upon. God even provides for Lazarus. The reason he is starving is that God was counting upon the rich man s stewardship of his bread. A portion was supposed to go to Lazarus but the rich man kept it for himself. Every time we tithe of our treasure, we feed Lazarus. One tenth of the weekend collection goes to the Charity Account. All of the children s collection (yellow children s envelopes) go to charity. Haven t you noticed that we have not had second collections from the pews? We give administratively from the Charity Account. It s a good deal for each charity, because bad weather or a playoff game does not affect the amount. It steadily goes up over time. The benefit to the person in the pew is that the homily focuses upon the readings and not on a sales pitch twice a month. But a deeper reason is poor old Lazarus. We cannot forget him as the rich man did. Our charitable giving is in solidarity with the poor. The majority of the Charity Account goes to feed the hungry and cloth the naked. We teach the poor to fish so they will not be hungry in the future. Thank you for your gift to God in the collection. The parish thanks you and so does poor old Lazarus. 3 Stewardship of Time & Talent Choir Information Adult Choir: Rehearsals are on Wednesdays in the Church at 7:00pm. Youth Choir (ages 9-14): Rehearsals are in the church on Thursdays at 3:45pm. The youth choir will sing at the 11:30am Mass once a month on October 9, November 6, December 24 at 4:00pm, February 12, March 12, and April 16 (Easter Sunday). 5 Year of Mercy Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Last week we pondered the important role that ethical entrepreneurs have in creating jobs. Whew! That s not me. So I m off the hook. And just when I thought it was safe to open the gospel again, bam. There sits Lazarus not the same man as the one Jesus raised from the dead in John s gospel homeless, hungry, sick, right outside my door. Luke s gospel is a lot like this beggar. It sits at the door of our hearts, relentlessly demanding that we pay attention. Don t you love that Lazarus has a name and the rich man doesn t? He who is so destitute in this world is given the thing so valued in his culture and ours, a name to carry his memory into the future. And is the rich man nameless because gulp we are meant to insert our name there? The late, great John Kavanaugh, SJ made the connection beautifully. He suggested that the great abyss between the torments of hell and the bliss of heaven exists today in the huge wealth disparities between those who head corporations, whose bonuses are in the millions, and those who sew the clothes that fill their stores, presently making 56 cents an hour. We don t need to look further than our own American cities to see the abyss that stretches between the 1% a large number of whom cluster together in one single block in Manhattan! and the working poor, who are clearly not benefitting from the recovery. I wish I had room to name here the many friends I have whose lives of selfless charity offer them this great comfort: they look forward to sharing the heavenly banquet with the friends who once huddled at their doors. Kathy McGovern All Souls Memorial Display This year, St. Vincent de Paul will create a display board featuring photos of parishioners and of parishioners loved ones who have died in the past year. To have your loved one included on the memorial display, send an titled All Souls Display to pam@saintvincents.org. Please include your name and contact information, the name of your loved one, his/her date of birth and date of death. Attach a color photograph as a.jpg file. If you are unable to a photo, bring your photo to the parish office to have it scanned. Due to space limitations, please only send photos of those who have died in the past year (September 1, 2015 to date). Photos must be received by Friday, October 14. Photos received after that time will be placed in a basket near the memorial.
