2 5TH SUNDAY OF EASTER Pastor s Message Dear Parishioners, The Sundays of the Easter Season prepare us for the coming Solemnity of Pentecost. This Sunday s Gospel reading from John s Gospel is a good example. John s Gospel has a threechapter long farewell speech by the earthly Jesus to his disciples the night before he dies. The Church uses today s reading as if the Risen Lord is speaking to us now. The Vine and the Branches reading is given by the Risen Lord as a farewell before he leaves and makes room for the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. The message is that unity is important for the Church. The broken church of Chris anity that we have today is a scandal. Any effort at working for Chris an unity is the work of the Risen Lord. Part of my seminarian training was to know protestant theology be er than most Protestants. This knowledge has served me well as I fight for religious freedom for all Chris ans in the world of poli cs. Our voice will not be silenced! Uni ng Chris an on the issues of life, tradi onal marriage and parental rights is also a unifier. When we work for unity, we are doing the Lord s work. What I have found what separates us the most is the fear we have of each other. Do not be afraid to reach out and to be friendly to our fellow Chris ans. The world hates us and we are stronger when we are united. Let us pray and work for Chris an unity as the vine and branches are part of the same living plant. The Lord is arisen! Alleluia! JOSEPH COTTOLENGO ST. CELESTINE FEASTDAY: MAY 1 DEATH: 1012 He was a Benedic ne Monk at the St. Hippolyte monastery on Mount Zabor outside Nitra in modern Slovakia, taking the name Benedict. He was the student of St. Andrew Zorard. With his abbot s permission, Benedict withdrew from communal life to live nearby as a hermit. He is noted for his asce c lifestyle. He was strangled by a gang of thieves who believed he was hiding a treasure in his cave and then they dumped his body into the River Váh. 4 5TH SUNDAY OF EASTER Stewardship of Time & Talent EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP When I was a teenager, I had an experience that truly changed my life and helped me to give Jesus all of myself. I had been bap zed Catholic and always had faith, but it took a specific event to really shake me out of the comfort of my life and set me on a path devoted to God. I didn't get knocked off a horse or find an open tomb, but for me it was powerful enough to make a huge impact. Tes monies of how people came to live as inten onal disciples have great power. O en the stories do not include singular events or people; instead they speak of a gradual unfolding of faith. It is o en the culmina on of several events and the work of more than one person that brings a person to the point of real decision. Living as good stewards, we can help move people forward in their journey with God. Giving of ourselves freely can move human hearts like few other forces. God working through us can bring others to see that simply saying that Jesus is the Savior of the world does not mean we live our lives differently. It takes more thought and reflec on on our part to move past words to inten onal acts with inten onal results. I don't know if all those involved in that event when I was a teenager knew what an effect their good stewardship would have on me, but I am so thankful they provided a way for God to touch me. I have spent my en re life trying to pay them back by allowing God to touch others through me. Just what person might God touch through you today? 7 Catholic Events and Resources 5th Sunday of Easter My friend Joni used to have this plaque hanging over her fireplace: Lord, thank you for everything I know today. And forgive me for everything I thought I knew yesterday. I think of that wonderful message when I consider Saul, he of the inherited Roman ci zenship and perfect Jewish pedigree, the Pharisee who was the son of a Pharisee, breathing fire as he self-righteously marched to Damascus in order to arrest any Chris ans living there. Here s a guy who knew who was right and who was wrong, who was in and who was out. No one was a fiercer persecutor of the infant Church than he. And yet, when a light flashed around him and struck him to the ground, he had the grace to ask, Who are you? He heard, I am Jesus, whom you are persecu ng. And that was that. All of history lted at the moment when Saul, the tri-lingual Jewish defender of Orthodoxy, the one person who was as comfortable in the big ci es as in the backwater, unincorporated, lawless badlands of the far-flung Roman empire, asked Jesus for his iden ty. He spent the rest of his life, in synagogues and law courts, in Gen le marketplaces and desolate prisons, telling everyone he met about that iden ty. There are no records of the event, but we can feel sure that he was s ll preaching Jesus to his execu oners as they leveled the sword against his head. He risked it all so that we might know Jesus. Thank you, St. Paul. You ve shown us how to admit that we some mes get it wrong. What example can you give of having the humility to admit that you were wrong? Kathy McGovern It s thus perfectly logical that the most acute threats to our religious freedom come. from gender theorists and sexrights activists - and businesses happy to support them - who push liberation. - Archbishop Chaput, Strangers in a Strange Land Holy Hour for Jack Phillips sunday may 6 Supreme Court will annouce their decision regarding Jack Phillips' case before June. Jack s story: In July 2012, 2 men came into Masterpiece Cakeshop in Lakewood, CO, and asked Jack Phillips, the owner, to bake a wedding cake for them. They planned to marry in Massachusetts, where same-sex marriages were legal at the time, and then hold a reception in Colorado. But Jack Phillips politely declined, explaining that he would gladly make them any other type of baked item they wanted, but that he could not design a cake promoting a same-sex ceremony because of his faith. The men filed a complaint with the Colorado Civil Rights Commission and Jack has been fighting this ruling in the courts ever since. The case has finally made it to the Supreme Court..
