2 Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Pastor s Message Dear Parishioners, A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Our faith is like that. The Catholic faith has been handed down link, by link, in an unbroken chain from Jesus Christ himself. We cannot let our day and age be that broken or weakest link. This weekend is our stewardship of faith commitment weekend. Our faith is more valuable than our treasure. Let us be the best stewards of that faith by preserving it and making it grow. Reading the pastor s letter in the bulletin or reading the Archbishop s letter in the Denver Catholic, are ways to grow in the faith. Being a teacher for sacramental preparation is a way to preserve the faith. Parents have clear obligations to be the first teachers of faith to their children. Sending children to a Catholic school does not excuse a parent of their responsibility. We teachers find that students turn a deaf ear to us unless it is first heard at home. The parish assists parents to be good stewards of the faith so they can be the best teachers. Please make a commitment today. Sincerely in Christ, Stewardship of Prayer stewardship A WAY OF LIFE Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and the evidence of things unseen. Heb 11:1 In stewardship spirituality, we are to receive our gifts with thanksgiving to God. One of His gifts is our faith. We can grow our faith by participating in Bible study groups or attending, catechetical conferences, and parish missions. You can also read books about the faith, Catholic newspapers and magazines, or watch or listen to Catholic TV or radio shows. It is also true that we learn by teaching. So you might want to be a catechist, lead a Bible study, or be a sponsor for new converts. More importantly you can be a witness to your faith. As Pope Paul VI said, Modern man listens more willingly to witness than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witness (Evangelii Nuntiandi #41). Please consider making a commitment to at least one way to grow your faith. 5 September 18, 2016 Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Hmm. I m staring at the dollar bill I just took out of my wallet. Sure enough, it s still there. In God we trust. I m kind of surprised it hasn t been removed by now. Before I read Robert Lupton s Charity Detox: What Charity Would Look Like if we Cared About Results I would have joked that it s actually the perfect slogan for our consumer world. Money is our God, and we trust in it. But I m seeing things differently now, and the story about the unjust steward doesn t shock me as much as it used to. The truth is that the brilliant and innovative business people who serve mammon are exactly who this world needs. We should celebrate and support (and occasionally include in our General Intercessions) prayers for all business people, because the most effective method of poverty alleviation is economic development. We all have our frustrations with technology, but the tech fields have created more wealth (and jobs) in the world than all the charities that have ever existed. Extreme poverty has been reduced by more than half in the last decade because China and India who represent the greatest concentration of global poverty in the world have become major economic players in technologies that have created unparalleled levels of employment for their 2.5 billion people. Now, their business ethics, like those of the unjust steward, need a huge overhaul. But in the baby steps of economic justice they have taken some huge steps forward. How astounding that Jesus knew this basic business principle! Engage those who know how to make money, and put them to work building the kingdom of God. How is your business investing money and talent in creating economic justice?
