2 THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD Pastor s Message Dear Parishioners, The wise men were not Jewish. Jesus was Jewish and the long awaited messiah is a Jewish concept. When we understand the Jewish context of Christianity then we better understand a feast such as the Epiphany. The term epiphany means God s revelation to the gentiles. Anybody who is not Jewish is a gentile. The wise men were gentiles who journeyed to find the savior of the world. Jesus is much more than a messiah; he is the king of kings and lord of lords. The whole world is invited to find him. Jesus Christ is the savior of the world. The phrase, hiding in plain sight, applies here. We do not have to look far to find Jesus. If we have a wrong or false understanding of Jesus, then we have not found him. Looking inside ourselves is probably the best place to start. The good news is that Jesus is God. He really wants to know us and help us with our problems. If we have problems too hard for God to solve, then we just might have a wrong idea of God. Today is the Feast of the Epiphany, take the journey and find the savior of the world! For further information, contact our parish office at Stewardship of Faith Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and the evidence of things unseen. Heb 11:1 In stewardship spirituality, we are to receive our gifts with thanksgiving to God. One of His gifts is our faith. We can grow our faith by participating in Bible study groups or attending, catechetical conferences and parish missions. You can also read books about the faith, Catholic newspapers and magazines, or watch or listen to Catholic TV or radio shows. It is also true that we learn by teaching. So you might want to be a catechist, lead a Bible study or be a sponsor for new converts. More importantly you can be a witness to your faith. As Pope Paul VI said, Modern man listens more willingly to witness than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witness (Evangelii Nuntiandi #41) Are you working on your Faith commitments? What is holding you back from making those changes in your life? Stewardship Prayer My parish is composed of people like me. I help make it what it is. It will be friendly, if I am. It will be holy, if I am. Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them. It will do great work, if I work. It will be prayerful, if I pray. It will make generous gifts to many causes, if I am a generous giver. It will bring others into worship, if I invite and bring them in. It will be a place of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, of compassion, charity, and mercy. if I, who make it is, am filled with these same things. Therefore, with the help of God, I now dedicate myself to the task of being all the things that I want my parish to be! Making Stewardship a Way of Life! 3

Medical Foot Care and Blood Pressure Checks provided by the Visiting Nurses Association. The cost per visit is $35, or it may be covered by some Kaiser Health Plans. Sandwich Sunday Sunday, January 14th - 8:30 am to 9:30 am Twice per month volunteers make about 500 sandwiches for the sandwich line at the Cathedral. Sandwiches are made after the 7:30 am Mass on the second Sunday of the month and after the 9:30 am Mass on the third Sunday of the month. 7 Catholic Events and Resources (continued) The Epiphany of the Lord Here s that beautiful story again. You know the one. Three immigrants, following a Star, cross unnamed borders, have an interview with a Crazy King, joyfully reconnect with the Star in Bethlehem, and make their presence (presents) known to Mary and Joseph. They could have succumbed to Herod s flattery. They could have sent a message to the palace, saying, Oh yes, great and wise king, your humble servants have been the first to locate the King of the Jews! We ll return for our finder s fee, and perhaps a place of honor in your cabinet. But they were too prayerful, too intuitive, too full of wonder to do anything so risky to The Child. They had, after all, seen his star rise a full two years earlier. They left all the comforts of language, food and citizenship in order to find the One whose star drew them away from what they knew into the endless depths of what can never be fully known. And so they entered the house over which the Star hovered, and nothing has ever been the same. And when it came to them in a dream not to return to Herod, they paid attention to that dream and went home another way. If even one of them had defected and said, This is my time to get rich and famous and I m selling this scoop to the tabloids, he could have made a run for Jerusalem and made Herod a very happy man. The soldiers would have intercepted the Holy Family before they ever left Bethlehem. But not one of the Magi desired anything but to find him for whom his heart longed. Very wise men, indeed. In what ways has following the path of righteousness given you a deep joy? Kathy McGovern A Returning Soul By Harry Graham, Jr. After a lengthy absence from the Catholic Church, God led me back to His Church. He did so by reminding me through His Holy Spirit of how the Catholic Church remained a part of my life since birth. Then through prayer He led me to and talked with me through His Holy Word in Proverbs 22:6 Train children in the right way, and when old, they will not stray. As a result He led me to a priest who, after several months, took my confession and welcomed me back into God s Catholic Church. This priest directed me to St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Parish. There I met with Pastor Father Andrew. Knowing that I needed to re-acquaint my knowledge of the Church, I asked him where I could obtain this information. He gave several ideas including an Internet website called FORMED.ORG. In addition, both Mila Glodava (Director of Stewardship and Administration) and Kelly Archer (Director of Marriage and Family) encouraged me and provided the Church s membership code to FORMED.ORG. I WAS ABLE TO SIGN ON FOR A MOST INCREDIBLE TEACHING ON OUR CATHOLIC FAITH. I don t know where you are in your faith a cradle Catholic, new Catholic, old Catholic or a returning soul. We all need to be encouraged in our Faith! To hear our Faith affirmed as spoken by professional Catholic individuals is most EXTRAORDINARY and they are home-based here in the Denver metro area. FORMED.ORG has become part of my morning prayer and devotion time. The subjects available seem endless.
