2 Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time Pastor s Message Dear Parishioners, When I help people about family matters, I often say do not burn your bridges. Religion can and will divide families. Remember: we are to choose God over our families. Those who do choose God suffer rejection from those who do not follow. Building bridges does not compromise on what is important, nor does it mean you have to burn down every bridge. The middle point is where love, compassion, and understanding find a place to meet. Our parish s evangelization effort will often focus upon family members who have not followed us in the past but could in the future. It is important to speak about our faith in personal terms and in the first person. Dogmatic proclamations are not found in the middle point where love, compassion, and understanding meet. Make the focus ourselves and not them and speak about our feelings. It is not threatening when they are not the focus. Attraction is the best form of promotion. Happiness and joy are contagious. If you live these virtues, they will want what you have. Jesus is good news, when they hear about him in this way. No two people have the same gifts. We all have abilities and qualities that God has given to us. If we are young or old, we are asked to thank God for our gifts. Recognizing our gifts and abilities are managed by the virtue of humility, some are proud of their gifts, some are not. Only with humility does gratitude come to the faithful. Please come prepared to make a commitment of our talent next weekend. We will have a ministry fair which is particularly helpful for the newcomer. Please visit the tables and a word of thanks to those who are staffing them. 3 Stewardship of Time & Talent Ministry Fair The Ministry Fair is Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28 after all of the Masses in the Garden Room/ Patio. Cliff McMillan will be the celebrant for the healing Mass. All are welcome. Sandwiches Twice per month volunteers make about 500 sandwiches for the sandwich line at the Cathedral. Sandwiches are made after the 7:30am Mass on the second Sunday of the month and after the 9:30am Mass on the third Sunday of the month. 5 August 21, 2016 Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time The sidewalks in our neighborhood are terrible. I ve tripped on the cracks so many times that every time I kneel I suspect I have some permanently broken bones from falling on them so many times. That s probably why that little sentence at the end of the letter to the Hebrews caught my attention: Make straight paths for your feet, that what is lame may not be disjointed but healed. Oh, for a straight path down our street! Chastened by experience, I walk with my head down, watching out for the gaps that are waiting to send me flying. There s a metaphor there, I think. The author has been making a case for suffering, suggesting that pain is God s gentle correction, a loving parent s way of setting us back on the straight and narrow. Wounded but not fatally we are now encouraged to make a new path in life, a new way of walking through doubt, boredom, chronic pain, and the many temptations that try to trip us up. There are many sidewalks. Some of them are sparkling new, but you have to make the effort to find them. Their names are Release from bitterness. Gratitude. Acceptance. Embrace of Jesus. Others are easy to find, in fact you may have been walking them for years. Their names are Inertia. Cynicism. More interest in your ipad than in your children. (And, young readers, more interest in your phone than in your parents!) Make a new path. Don t let the old wounds fester. Step away from the habits that have carved the ruts in your life that keep tripping you and hurting you. Today s a perfect day for a nice walk. How are you working on new way of walking?
