2 32ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Pastor s Message Dear Parishioners, The story of the two copper coins the widow gave to God is filled with meaning. Jesus says she gave more than those who put in huge amounts because she gave from her substance while they gave from their surplus. Giving like this is a sacrifice. Most parents make sacrifices out of love for their children. Soldiers are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for their country. What is the level of sacrifice that we are willing to make for God? The financial metaphor used to describe our commitment to God is easy to see when it comes to money. Sadly, there are some who cannot deliver even at this level. What is harder to see is the sacrifice of our self to God. This is much harder and it is the challenge to those who tithe. Sometimes making a substantial gift is changing the way we live. Our lifestyle can have luxuries but we cannot live a life of luxury. Sadly, there are some who cannot sacrifice a luxury for God. What is the level of sacrifice that we are willing to make for God? If we cannot give from our surplus, how are we going to give from our substance? The poor widow reminds us that we all have a need to give, because it prepares us to give it all away when we die. November is when we ponder the mystery of death. Jesus tells us to be ready. Our readiness plans need to include the same love that parents have for their children, or a soldier for his country. Others figure it out, will we? Let us pray for our dearly departed brothers and sisters and those who served their country paying the ultimate price. Outreach Presenta on about the Denver Mortuary and Cemeteries Outreach Staff from Catholic Funeral & Cemetery Services of Northern Colorado, a Ministry of the Archdiocese of Denver, will be at St. Vincent de Paul Parish after the Anticipatory Mass on Saturday November 10th and after all Masses on Sunday November 11th to discuss the spiritual and practical reasons for learning about Catholic Funeral & Cemetery Services. You will have the opportunity to attend a short presentation following each Mass and Pastry and coffee will be served! Catholic Events Resources CATHOLIC CHARITIES NEEDS MORE AMBASSADORS! 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time I love hanging around people who give everything they have, just because that s where their joy is. I love watching grandparents with their adorable little ones, not caring that crawling around and lifting up babies sets off that bad back. I like watching people doing jobs they love. Everyone I know who plays an instrument well would happily play all night. People who are great at hospitality, who know how to make strangers feel comfortable and friends feel welcomed, would do that every day if we would let them. I would write this column twice a day if church bulletins were set up that way. My husband Ben would fix the muffler on our car every week of his life if it would just keep breaking. We love to pursue what makes us happy, and the saddest people, I suspect, are those who are deprived of that most basic of human rights. I remember the great 90s sitcom Mad About You, and how well it captured the essence of the main characters. But I don t need a haircut, said the husband to his ultraenergetic wife. I know, she said, but I really need to give you one. That s the thing we need to remember. Sometimes, tis truly better to receive than to give, because it means so much to the giver. I wonder about that widow in the Temple. Yes, the scribes were a disgrace in comparison with her. But the people I know who give everything they have do so because, for them, nothing comes close to that kind of joy. I want to hope that s what was going on with her.
