2 4TH SUNDAY OF ADVENT Pastor s Message Dear Parishioners, Bethlehem is the birthplace of Jesus Christ and of King David. Jewish prophecy says King David s lineage would last forever and the Messiah would come from him. Jesus would be mocked as a king at his crucifixion and he was taunted for being the so called Messiah. Only after the resurrection did the Church realize that his authority as a king would include the power over life and death. Not even death could stop his kingship. His power to be the saving Messiah far exceeded the expectations of the people. Jesus died for the forgiveness of our sins. His gift to us to remember his saving act is the Eucharist. The yearly Passover bread is transformed into a daily offering. The title Christ means Messiah. When we say Jesus Christ we are recognizing him as the Messiah. Bethlehem means the house of bread. Jesus is the bread of life. The bread of the Eucharist reminds us that the house of Jesus s body would rise on the third day. This same body is with us this day as we sing and pray remembering the little town of Bethlehem. Keep this in mind as we prepare to celebrate Christmas. 3 Stewardship of Prayer & Faith December 23, 2018 Parish and School Holy Hour sponsored by Respect Life Fourth thsunday of Advent Luke 1:39-45 Blessed Advent! Today we have two mothers meeting; they are related, and one carries in her womb John the Baptist and the other woman, Mary, carries in her womb Jesus. The Gospel account says that John, who would cry out in the desert the message that everyone needs to "prepare the way of the Lord," leapt with joy in the womb of his mother upon hearing Mary's greeting. John's message in the desert is the message that we all need to heed as we get closer to the Christmas celebration. May our faith leap with joy at the chance to proclaim our Lord and to prepare the way! Light On Liturgy 4th Sunday of Advent The first nativity scene was staged by St. Francis of Assisi in St. Francis set up a manger with hay, an ox and an ass in a cave in Grecio Italy. He then invited the villagers to come gaze upon the scene while he preached about the birth and life of Christ. The Na vity of the Lord Our hearts are aglow with the joy of Christmas! Our senses are alive with the season, from the rich smells of evergreen and gingerbread to the feel of crisp air on our skin and the warmth of a loved one s embrace. At some point in the holiday hustle and bustle, take a few moments of quiet. In the silence, reflect on the other senses of the season. Imagine the cool damp of an animal stable, the earthy smell of hay and feed, and the crisp night air blowing in so ly. Imagine kneeling beside an exhausted, joyful mother and a relieved, protec ve father. Imagine an infant wrapped in cloth scraps held out to your open arms. Imagine holding the infant Jesus. As his eyes meet yours, welcome into your heart the greatest gi of Christmas. 3

5 Stewardship of Time & Talent (Continued) December 23, 2018 Sandwiches for the Poor On the third Sunday of the month a er 9:30 Mass, families gather in the cafeteria to make sandwiches for the poor. We are in need of families to host a month throughout the year to help coordinate the set-up, sandwich making, clean up and delivery of the sandwiches. It only takes a couple hours on a Sunday morning to make a huge difference. It is a great way for you to come together with your family and show them the importance of helping the poor in our community. We would be grateful for any help you can give, even if it is for just one month. If you have any ques ons or would like to volunteer, please contact Sherri Doyle at ext. 208 or her at Sherri@saintvincents.org. Our next date to make sandwiches is January 20th. Please feel free to join others in the cafeteria and take that me to see what it is all about and ask ques ons. St. Vincent de Paul Society The Fruits of Your Bounty Thanks to the generous dona ons you made to the weekly offering, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to help families in need in our area. We just want to tell you about one family we helped this past week. Dominique lost her purse on the way to day care, and had just cashed her paycheck. She lost everything, especially her rent money for the month. She works full me and gets food stamps. One of our volunteers picked her and her family up for Sunday Mass. Thanks to your generosity, the Society was able to keep this family in their home. Your dona ons helped them and so many others who are in difficult situa ons. God loves those who love the poor. Stewardship of Faith Fourth Sunday of Advent I received one of those lovely BELIEVE mantel plaques from a friend the other day. It looks so beautiful up there, surrounded by Christmas cards, our Advent wreath ablaze now with all four candles glowing. It s not a suggestion anymore, I don t think. BELIEVE is a mandate, an absolute demand of our whole self. To BELIEVE puts us right there with Mary herself, who BELIEVED that the promise of the Lord would be fulfilled. On the First Sunday of Advent we all resolved to pray for an unknown reader of this column, recognizing that another unknown reader was praying for us. If you happened to miss that week s reflection, it s not too late. Right now, imagine someone out there who is reading this. That person needs your prayers. That person may have been praying for you these past Advent weeks. BELIEVE that your prayers for an unknown reader are reaching heaven this very minute. But getting back to Mary, her immediate departure from Nazareth to walk ninety miles to Elizabeth s home is just fascinating. She must have been very close to her cousin. Don t you get the feeling that she was as thrilled to hear of her aging cousin s pregnancy as she was amazed to announce her own? I wonder if she rehearsed how she was going to explain to her cousin this most astonishing (and history-changing) news. Was she nervous when she walked into the house? Any apprehension she might have had flew out the window the second she arrived, because the pre-born John recognized the pre-born Jesus and leaped for joy. Oh, and by the way, we don t ever have to ask again when life begins. In what ways do you feel the prayers of the unseen reader who is praying for you? Kathy McGovern

Las Posadas is celebrated throughout La n America. "Posada" is Spanish for "inn." Over the course of nine nights, local groups reenact the Holy Family's search for lodging in Bethlehem. Children dress as Mary and Joseph, angels, shepherds, and Wise Men. They go from home to home singing Christmas carols throughout the neighborhood. A er several "rejec ons," the final home welcomes the group for a party. Las Posadas is a social event, a family gathering, and a moral lesson. Las Posadas reminds par cipants of the importance of hospitality and welcome to those in need.
