2 THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT Pastor s Message Dear Parishioners, What we notice about the 3rd Sunday of Advent is the color rose, which is a symbol for joy. The idea is that we are anticipating the celebration of the birth of Christ by remembering the promises of God. God keeps his promises and we are filled with joy. This time of year is challenge for those that are hurting. We see happy people and force a smile to fit in but feel miserable. We can fake happiness but we cannot fake joy. Leaning how to let go of past hurts is how Jesus brings healing to those who are suffering. Jesus promises he will save us and it is up to us to let go of the past. When we feel the same way we did at the time we were hurt, that is a problem. Hanging on to hurt feelings does no better then stuffing them down and away. Those feeling are not gone and they will rob us from the authentic joy of this season. Jesus promises to forgive. We must forgive in return and accept forgiveness from others. Try it, and you will not need to force a smile. A great relief fills us and we are grateful for our savior. We will know joy! Sincerely in Christ, Stewardship of Prayer Advent and Christmas Mass Schedule Fourth Sunday of Advent Saturday, December 23rd 5:00 pm Sunday, December 24th 7:30 am 9:30 am 11:30 am Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Sunday, December 24th 4:00 pm (Prelude 3:30 pm) 6:00 pm 11:00 pm (Prelude 10:30 pm) Monday, December 25th 9:30 am 11:30 am For your information, the regular Sunday Masses on December 24th fulfill your obligation for the 4th Sunday of Advent. For further information, contact our parish office at Stewardship of Faith About Our Relics Saint Vincent de Paul Parish has been blessed now with custody of first-class relics of saints throughout the Church history: Apostolic Age and Church Fathers, Conversion of Western Europe and the Middle Ages, Reformation and Catholic Reformation, Age of Renaissance, Enlightenment and French Revolution and the Church in the Modern World. Among the 70 are: Apostles (2) St. Jude and St. Matthias; Martyrs (29): St. Sebastian, St. Polycarp, St. Lawrence, St. Cecilia, St. Thomas Becket and St. Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein); Popes (3): Alexander I, Pius X, and John Paul II; Confessors (4): St. Basil the Great, St. John Bosco, St. John Francis Regis, and St. Joseph Benedict of Cottolengo. Abbots (3): St. Benedict of Nursia and St. Romuald; Founders of Religious Orders (21): St. Teresa of Avila, St. Anthony Claret, St. Francis of Asissi, St. Ignatius of Loyola, and St. Vincent de Paul; Priests (9): St. Francis Xavier, St. Philip Neri, and St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen; Bishops (9): St. Boniface, St. Ildephonsus, and St. Oliver Plunket; Virgins (16); St. Faustina, St. Juliana Falconieri, and St. Gemma Galgani; and Doctors of the Church (6): St. Ambrose, St. Basil the Great, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Bernard of Clairvaux and St. Therese of Lisieux. Please note that the above are only a sampling of the first-class relics under the custody of St. Vincent de Paul. Also, some saints may also belong to another category. For instance, as you can see on the list, St. Basil the Great is listed in three categories: confessor, bishop and Doctor of the Church. Others were simply listed in one category. For instance, St. Cecilia is both virgin and a martyr, and St. Jude and St. Matthias are both apostles and martyrs. The Very Rev. Andrew Kemberling has made it his personal mission to gather first-class relics collecting dust in drawers of previous custodians so that they properly accorded the honor they deserve. As he has done in his previous parish, St. Thomas More in Centennial, all the relics he collected will remain under the custody of the parish. His goal is to promote devotion to, and to venerate, the saints, our ally in our quest to become holy. from Mila Glodava's Blog - October 28,

7 Catholic Events and Resources (continued) December 17, 2017 Third Sunday of Advent I get the best ideas from my friends. Last year my wonderful friend Julie shared with me how nice Thanksgiving was at their house because she laid out bags, water bottles, toothbrushes and toothpaste, and McDonald s gift certificates on the dessert table. After everyone had enjoyed the pumpkin pie, they carefully filled their bags with goodies to hand out to the people standing on the street corners. What a great idea. I tried it with my family and they loved it, so we did it again this year and will do it for Christmas too. That little holiday discipline reminds me of Isaiah s anointed one who is sent to do all the hard things: heal the brokenhearted, release prisoners, and bring glad tidings to those who are poor. It s the little things, really, that advance the kingdom. The person who knows no brokenhearted people is the person who is living a deeply isolated life. I ll bet each person reading this could name at least a dozen people struggling with a broken heart right this minute. And guess what? We re the ones God has anointed to heal them. There are a number of ministries in the Church that address the spiritual needs of those in prison, and those ministries depend on us God s anointed ones to do the corporal work of mercy of visiting those in prison. I have friends who easily engage those who stand on the sidewalk carrying a sign. They offer a warm smile, and always ask the person s name. They never give money, but they thoughtfully keep a small bag of helpful items for them. For some, a toothbrush can bring glad tidings better than a ten-dollar bill. What special work do you feel anointed to carry out? Kathy McGovern A Returning Soul By Harry Graham, Jr. After a lengthy absence from the Catholic Church, God led me back to His Church. He did so by reminding me through His Holy Spirit of how the Catholic Church remained a part of my life since birth. Then through prayer He led me to and talked with me through His Holy Word in Proverbs 22:6 Train children in the right way, and when old, they will not stray. As a result He led me to a priest who, after several months, took my confession and welcomed me back into God s Catholic Church. This priest directed me to St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Parish. There I met with Pastor Father Andrew. Knowing that I needed to re-acquaint my knowledge of the Church, I asked him where I could obtain this information. He gave several ideas including an Internet website called FORMED.ORG. In addition, both Mila Glodava (Director of Stewardship and Administration) and Kelly Archer (Director of Marriage and Family) encouraged me and provided the Church s membership code to FORMED.ORG. I WAS ABLE TO SIGN ON FOR A MOST INCREDIBLE TEACHING ON OUR CATHOLIC FAITH. I don t know where you are in your faith a cradle Catholic, new Catholic, old Catholic or a returning soul. We all need to be encouraged in our Faith! To hear our Faith affirmed as spoken by professional Catholic individuals is most EXTRAORDINARY and they are home-based here in the Denver metro area. FORMED.ORG has become part of my morning prayer and devotion time. The subjects available seem endless. All build up our Faith and give us greater love and confidence to share God s holy and glorious Catholic Church. PLEASE DON T MISS OUT ON THIS BLESSING FROM OUR PARISH. JOIN WITH ME EVERY MORNING OR EVENING ON FORMED.ORG. It s free. Just use the parish access code: XFTDNJ. God s additional blessing is waiting for you Support our Advertisers 7
