2 THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH Pastor s Message Dear Parishioners, The traditional family is a part of God s plan. The love of a father and mother starts a child s understanding of love. The child grows to understand security and comfort and associates them with family life. Love and authority comes from parents. Love is primarily learned from mothers and authority is primarily learned from fathers. The relationships learned is a pattern learned by the child for better or for worse. This weekend is the Solemnity of the Holy Family. In comparing our family to the perfect family remember to use the standard of good, better and best. When families fall short of being the best, God has backed up survival systems in us. When things stabilize we can and are expected to do better. In fact, everyone is asked to do the best that they can do. Please let this celebration today be the springboard to happier times in our families. Christ centered living really is living happy, joyous and free. Thank you for making needy families happier with gifts from the Jesse Tree. Thanks needs to go to Kelly and Laurel, St. Vincent de Paul Society and Machbeuf High School for putting together this charity. 3 Stewardship of Prayer & Faith December 30, 2018 Parish and School Holy Hour sponsored by Respect Life Mary, the Holy Mother of God This solemnity is a rather recent addi on to the cycle of seasons, Sundays, and feasts in our liturgical year. We have Pope Paul VI to thank for the 1974 enshrining of the devo on to Mary into our calendar on January 1. It is also a day in our calendar as a World Day for Peace. Let us pray... God of heaven and earth, you came to us and took our earthly flesh through the gi of Mary's yes. She is our Mother in faith, as she is your earthly mother. We are thankful beyond our ability to thank you for the gi of her Son as our brother and savior. Through her self-giving, we have been reconciled to you. Bless us as we begin this New Year and endow us with the desire and ability to create a world of peace. We ask all this, through the intercession of Mary to you, one God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen. And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father's only Son, full of grace and truth. - Jn 1:14 The Most Holy Name of Jesus What is in a name? Why is it so important? Those of us who are parents know how much me we spend thinking and discussing about what name to give our newborn children. It is the same with the church. Recall the Scripture passage about how the animals were named in Genesis. Changing our name is also a way to mark an important moment in our lives. Think of Saul who persecuted the Chris ans. His name was changed to Paul when he realized that Jesus was the Son of God. And even our popes change their names and take on a new name; Jorge Mario Bergoglio became Francis. The entrance an phon for the feast of the Most Holy Name of Jesus gives us a glimpse into how important Jesus' name is: At the name of Jesus, every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. The history of the Holy Name of Jesus goes back to the earliest years of Chris anity. How many of you remember the symbol IHS? It is a monogram. It comes from the Greek word for Jesus. This reverence con nued into the medieval devo ons promoted by St. Anselm of Canterbury. It was only during the Council of Lyons in 1274 that the Church added the date to our liturgical calendar. There are some wri ngs that call the Holy Name of Jesus a healing ointment for the soul. So the next me you think of the name of someone, recall the long and important history of Jesus' name and why we hold, with such reverence, Jesus' holy name. 3

5 Stewardship of Time & Talent (Continued) December 30, 2018 Sandwiches for the Poor On the third Sunday of the month a er 9:30 Mass, families gather in the cafeteria to make sandwiches for the poor. We are in need of families to host a month throughout the year to help coordinate the set-up, sandwich making, clean up and delivery of the sandwiches. It only takes a couple hours on a Sunday morning to make a huge difference. It is a great way for you to come together with your family and show them the importance of helping the poor in our community. We would be grateful for any help you can give, even if it is for just one month. If you have any ques ons or would like to volunteer, please contact Sherri Doyle at ext. 208 or her at Sherri@saintvincents.org. Our next date to make sandwiches is January 20th. Please feel free to join others in the cafeteria and take that me to see what it is all about and ask ques ons. Stewardship of Faith Feast of the Holy Family This is a painful feast for so many Catholics, I think. How many of us have the kind of holy family we imagined existed a few decades ago (but never really did, in some ways)? That holy family included mom, dad, at least a few kids, and, oh yes, everyone was happily in church on Sunday. The kids went on to marry other Catholics, and those families bore children who were contentedly growing up in the faith. Somehow we thought that model-whether it was actually working or not would weather all the cultural upheavals of our lifetimes. It didn t, of course. Is there a reader today who can say that his/her family has followed this path perfectly? I know a parish that can break your heart. The scattering of adults who make up the early morning Sunday congregation are as devout and educated as any community you could find. The choir has sung together, consistently, since the sixties. They are wonderful lectors and religious educators. They ve graduated from the Catholic Biblical School and Catechetical School. They ve maintained prayerful and loving, lifelong marriages. And yet there isn t a family that doesn t have an adult child on the street, lost amid the homeless population, due to the scourge of drugs and alcohol. Suicide is at least a monthly event there. Grandparents weep for their unbaptized grandchildren, whom they are raising because their own children are lost. These are extreme examples of the pain that some Catholic families experience, of course. The challenge for the average Catholic family is to trust that God is living and active in the lives of all our loved ones, despite how active their faith lives may be.
