2 Welcome to St. Margaret Mary Parish 2 (continued from previous column) From A Grateful Heart Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you. See, darkness covers the earth, and thick clouds cover the peoples; but upon you the LORD shines, and over you appears his glory EPIPHANY As described in Wikipedia Epiphanies are relatively rare occurrences and generally follow a process of significant thought about a problem. Often they are triggered by a new and key piece of information, but importantly, a depth of prior knowledge is required to allow the leap of understanding. In common usage an Epiphany is that A ha moment when our thoughts final bring together many varying ideas into one thought. A break-though, if you like! The idea of a child fulfilling the promises of God to send a Savior King (Zechariah 9:9) is a fulfilled in this new born child in Bethlehem. But, the prophets seemed to be foretelling of a warrior-king, not a humble, poor and helpless babe in a small village like Bethlehem. Never forget that the God who is love made you out of that love and has given you to this world as His gift. Your uniqueness is like secret knowledge that only you possess. To use your gifts is God s gift to us all and to avoid them is to leave the world broken and struggling with a missing and necessary piece of God s plan. Let this Christmas time be for you a time of Epiphany for you to see that God is with us and you. The Church is God s vehicle for all the gifts we need to be to each other and this struggling world. As the definition, from Wikipedia says, you that rare occurrence in someone else s life that can be significant, important and a leap of some understanding. We are all meant to fulfill the purpose of others by interacting and loving this world into the knowledge of the Kingdom of God in our midst. Emmanuel God is with us! Merry Christmas to you! Let us work for Peace on Earth for everyone! For peace comes to those who obey God s command to Love for it is those on whom his favor rests! May the Heart of The Savior Bless you! Fr. Patrick Nelson, SDS These wise men are called Magi. This word denotes one who has secret knowledge and wisdom of mysteries undiscovered. It is the same word that gives us the present word: magic! However, they are not magicians but, wise! They have read the prophets and seen the coming together of the real life events of nature that confirm for them the promises of a Savior-king in Bethlehem. These wise men have had an EPIPHANY! Many hopes, thoughts, writings and natural events have come together and they have put the pieces together like a jigsaw puzzle of many related pieces. Our lives can be just like that! Many pieces of events, prayers, hopes, knowledge and our journeys can come together to give us great insight into God s design for our lives. We all have a purpose in this world and it is not a selfish purpose but, a useful and helpful addition to the lives and times of those around us. WE CAN EACH MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR EACH OTHER. Lisa Richardson, Community Events Coordinator for St. Anne s Salvatorian Campus, will be giving a one hour presentation in Sampon Hall entitled Embracing Gratitude With A Sense of Humor. Hospitality will be offered. Community Service Opportunity: Would you like to put your faith into action and practice the Corporal Works of Mercy? Join members of both Blessed Savior and St. Margaret Mary for our next dual parish community service day on Saturday, January 19 from 10:30AM-2:30PM. We will be helping and visiting with elderly residents of St. Anne s. Activities will include helping take down Christmas decorations, visiting, and playing bingo. Contact Faith Formation Director Dave Liccione to learn more about any of these events. Keepin the Faith at St. Camillus St. Camillus is in need for volunteers to help with transporting (pushing wheelchairs) our assisted living residents to Mass and from Mass on Sundays at Guardian Angel and Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel (located on Campus). As you can imagine, many of our residents have an extremely strong faith, but are unable to transport themselves to Mass. We are excited to say that we have such great attendance to the services, that our Staff needs help!! The residents would greatly appreciate the assistance of being escorted to Mass and also having someone to sit next to during the Mass! Both of these Masses are at 10:30am, so commitment would be from 10am until 12pm on Sundays. 4 Milwaukee, Wisconsin 4 Servers all ages: boys and girls 4 th grade and up, high school & adult. We can also use your talents for: Sacristans, ushers, greeters, lectors, and Eucharistic ministers. Thank you so much for your generous donations to the St. Margaret Mary Giving Tree project. Your gifts were delivered by St. Vincent de Paul Santas to 19 families from our school and immediate neighborhood in time to go under the tree on Christmas Eve. A total of 65 children and 23 adults were touched by your holiday generosity. Thank you from the St. Vincent de Paul Conference of St. Margaret Mary. Pastoral Council members: we need at least 2 more. Your duty is to help discern, plan and carry out our parish goals for now and into the future. Hospitality helpers: to assist with and provide weekend hospitality after the masses, the third weekend of each month. Cantors: If you have some vocal ability and enjoy singing at Mass, please consider joining St. Margaret Mary's music ministry as a cantor. We have a program for the care of the sick & homebound. At this time we are particularly interested in those who might be in need of this ministry. 5 5 The Gift of Forgiveness To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you. I don t know who Lewis Smedes is but those are his wise words. It is important to remember that forgiveness is not granted because a person deserves to be forgiven. Instead, it is an act of love, mercy and grace. I recently had a caregiver share with me that she has been caring for her aunt for some years. Though she s doing all she can for her, she doesn t find joy in giving of herself because her aunt is not a nice person. Her aunt says unkind things to her, is never grateful for the assistance but instead constantly complains. It s never enough! Despite that, she feels guilty because she wants to be a cheerful giver. Her words to me were what kind of a person am I that I can t give of myself joyfully when I know my aunt really needs my assistance? I m there for her, and will continue to be so, but not with a kind heart. I responded by telling her about the person I was looking at. I saw a good person, with a kind heart and caring intentions. I said many people are caring for someone who is appreciative, that they love and want to support, and that helps to fuel them in their caregiving. Obviously she doesn t have that. So despite the lack of respect and gratitude from her care recipient, she continues to give. That takes a special person. Forgive Yourself If we see someone who is giving of themselves but not getting gratitude in return, we have empathy and wonder how they do it. But when we are the ones in that situation we are less forgiving of ourselves. No one can beat us up better than ourselves. That act of love, mercy and grace I previously spoke of is something that we should give to ourselves as well. Forgiveness is giving up the possibility of a better past. I encourage you to accept your state of being human, then move on and allow yor giving heart a chance to flourish without judgement. Adele Lund Director Community & Business Relations Laureate Group
