Because God is so good to us we sometimes forget how much we need God. Sometimes we are tempted to believe that we did it all ourselves. Those of us with faith know that this is the thinking of the foolish. God is so good to us that he prevents bad things from happening. Sometimes we are completely unaware while He protects us from all kinds of evil. So when we review the good things, don't forget the bad things that did not happen. Awareness means that we understand who we are and why we are here? It's an instant dose of humility to realize how much we need God and how much we rely on him to provide for us and to keep us safe. May we have happy times and appreciate good food and the company that we keep. May Christ be the silent guest at our meals and the unseen listener to our happy conversations. Happy Thanksgiving Day. You make the sun and rain come, nurturing the earth, making it fertile and fruitful. Through Your gift of creation and the work of our hands, we reap an abundant harvest. The Story of the Presenta on of the Blessed Virgin Mary Mary s presenta on was celebrated in Jerusalem in the sixth century. A church was built there in honor of this mystery. The Eastern Church was more interested in the feast, but it does appear in the West in the 11th century. Although the feast at mes disappeared from the calendar, in the 16th century it became a feast of the universal Church. As with Mary s birth, we read of Mary s presenta on in the temple only in apocryphal literature. In what is recognized as an unhistorical account, the Protoevangelium of James tells us that Anna and Joachim offered Mary to God in the Temple when she was 3 years old. This was to carry out a promise made to God when Anna was s ll childless. Though it cannot be proven historically, Mary s presenta on has an important theological purpose. It con nues the impact of the feasts of the Immaculate Concep on and of the birth of Mary. It emphasizes that the holiness conferred on Mary from the beginning of her life on earth con nued through her early childhood and beyond. 3

Healing Mass There will be a Healing Mass Monday, November 26th at 7pm. Come and receive the healing touch of our Lord. Prayer in the Square Saturday, December 1st Come pray for the sanctity of human life and for an end to the persecution of Christians worldwide. Our rosary begins at 8:30 AM following the 8:00 AM Mass. Please join us at the Ten Commandments Monument located on our parish grounds. St. Vincent de Paul Society Thanksgiving Day Mass The St. Vincent de Paul Society volunteers will be at the doors to greet you at the Thanksgiving Day Mass and to receive any non-perishable food dona ons you bring for our pantry. Please come and share your treasure with our blessed poor, the en re offertory from Mass will be used to help our neighbors in need. If you use envelopes to make your dona ons, the envelope for Thanksgiving, and the Society, is the one marked St. Vincent de Paul. We hope to share Thanksgiving with you at Mass on this beau ful day. In turn, we will share your food and monetary dona ons with our blessed poor. God loves those who love the poor. 5

6 November 18, rd Sunday in Ordinary Time The other day I was scrolling through the photos on my phone. I d forgotten that I d taken pictures of our backyard urban garden last year. There, in still life, stood cold and dreary January. But the next picture opened up another world: the hoeing and planting, and the beautiful rows and rows of the tiny greens of May. And then, with just a click, there they were: thousands of lush, plump red tomatoes, ready for harvest, ready for their destination at food banks around town. Yum. My favorite photo is one the day before our big freeze last month. Their baskets overflowing, the gardeners left a few hundred yellow and green and red tomatoes in a bucket on our porch, ready to be taken away as soon as they had room in their overflowing truck. It s the last picture that s so stunning, though. Just a week after the frost, our backyard morphed from the Garden of Eden into a Halloween ghost town. Dead, sad branches moaned. Lifeless, leafless plants bent over into sad farewell. And there it all was, right there, on a phone I d been ignoring for years. Life and death are accessible to me now, every time I click Photos. That s what this 33rd Sunday has always been about. We are ordered to open our hearts to the life and death we each carry deep in our hearts. Yes, winter is upon us, and we know not the day nor hour when we will see Jesus. But here s the good news. Jesus is Lord of the summer and the winter. Bidden or unbidden, death awaits us all. Our job is to keep planting, and harvesting, and waiting in joyful hope. How do you hold life and death deep in your heart?
