2 THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD Pastor s Message Dear Parishioners, The Baptism of the Lord brings the Christmas Season to a close. Jesus did not need to be baptized but he took John s baptism and transformed it into the gateway sacrament to the seven sacraments. God operates with mediation. This means that God uses people, places, things and events as an indirect way of communicating. Water becomes a mediator of God s power. Secondary means is the ordinary way God communicates with us. The seven Sacraments are the primary way God stays with us, encourages us, guides us and supports us. The Baptism of the Lord means all of these things. Renewing our Baptism is a way of wanting all of the sacraments to stay holy and honored. The sacraments that are meant to be repeated over and over are confession and communion. Remember these are mediators, but Jesus is invisibly but really present. Please find our dear Lord in Holy Communion today. Archbishop Aquila wants us to grow deeper in our relationship with Jesus. Our Archdiocesan wide program MTYR is about our closeness to our Lord. Obviously how people are prepared to receive a sacrament and those of us receiving them are asked to find the best way to build that relationship with God that will set our hearts aflame. Then we will come to the realization: It s more than you realize! 3 Stewardship of Prayer & Faith Parish and School Holy Hour sponsored by Respect Life The Bap sm of the Lord January 13, 2019 Think of what it's like to wait a long me. Can you imagine what it would be like to wait for centuries? No one person lives that long, of course. But for the Israelites, they had heard the stories from genera- on to genera on. They had been conquered me and me again, and now "the people were filled with expecta on, and all were asking in their hearts whether John might be the Christ." They had been wai ng for a Messiah, one who did miraculous deeds and said profound things; someone aglow with the glory of God. We all know what it's like to hope and be disappointed. But what if your hopes were fulfilled? That day at the Jordan River, an audience had gathered. Among the crowd for bap sm was an unknown man. Perhaps he was dirty from weeks in the desert. His hands had the calloused palms of a tradesman, a carpenter. He and John the Bap st may have embraced with the familiarity of the cousins they were. This man wades into the Jordan for a good, solid dunking. As he rises from the water, the One who breathed life into Adam gasps for air like any other man. But then "heaven was opened." The clouds in the sky part miles above. "And the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove." An appari- on with substance sails through the sky. It exudes gentleness and power all at once. "And a voice came from heaven, 'You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.'" Can you imagine the sight? For the crowd, there is no doub ng what they have seen, who they have seen. Can you imagine this encounter with our God who keeps His promises? What are you wai ng for? Thursday, January 17th, 2019 Adora on from 4:15 to 5:15 You are invited to share an hour in the presence of the Lord to receive his many graces. We expose the Blessed Sacrament and experience silence with a little light music at the opening and closing. The Sacrament of reconciliation will be available. Our Holy Hours will meet on the following Thursdays: Jan 24 Feb 7 Jan 31 Feb 14 Please plan on taking a few moments of your time to reflect on your many blessings! For further information, contact our parish office at Tuesday Rosary with Eucharis c Adora on Tuesday, January 15th 8:30 to 9:30 Please join in praying the Rosary with Eucharistic Adoration after the 8:00 am Mass each Tuesday. We begin our prayer at 8:30 am. Feel free to invite others to come and enjoy the healing touch of our Blessed Mother. Bap sm of the Lord Let us pray (in silence) [that we will be faithful to our bap sm] Eternal Father, you have given us your only-bego en Son to take our nature upon him, and revealed him to us at his bap sm in the River Jordan, grant that we, who have been born again of water and the Holy Spirit, and made your children by adop on and grace, may daily be renewed by your Holy Spirit, through Jesus Christ, our Saviour, who is alive with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. A er all the people had been bap zed and Jesus also had been bap zed and was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. - Lk 3:21-22a 3

A Short History of Handbells Early churches were the hub of the community. Most churches had a tower that was the highest point in the community. The church tower was a lookout, a symbol of pres ge and the most logical place to mount the bell that would call the faithful to Mass, announce weddings and funerals, and give the me three mes a day. The bell was rung at 6, 12 and 6. Individual mepieces were not available to most people and so they relied on the church bell. Eventually, with advances in metallurgy and building techniques, church towers began to climb higher and the numbers of bells housed in the towers also increased. Bells were made in diatonic pitches, and early bell ringers began to make algorithms, they called changes, which were quite intricate. Imagine then, if you will, living across from a church where the bell ringers prac ced for hours on the changes planned for that Sunday. In order to remain friends with the community, the bell ringers had small handbells made, that were able to be played indoors, and not heard all over the countryside. So somewhere around 1700, handbells were being manufactured in England. It wasn t ll 1902 that handbells were introduced to America. Most American handbells are being produced in Pennsylvania. In England, the handbell players are called a team. In America, the handbell players are called a choir. If you're interested in joining our handbell choir at St. Vincents, please contact our music director for more informa on. Danielle Lombardi at Ext

5 Stewardship of Time & Talent (Continued) Sandwiches for the Poor On the third Sunday of the month a er 9:30 Mass, families gather in the cafeteria to make sandwiches for the poor. We are in need of families to host a month throughout the year to help coordinate the set-up, sandwich making, clean up and delivery of the sandwiches. It only takes a couple hours on a Sunday morning to make a huge difference. It is a great way for you to come together with your family and show them the importance of helping the poor in our community. We would be grateful for any help you can give, even if it is for just one month. If you have any ques ons or would like to volunteer, please contact Sherri Doyle at ext. 208 or her at Sherri@saintvincents.org. Our next date to make sandwiches is January 20th. Please feel free to join others in the cafeteria and take that me to see what it is all about and ask ques ons. Stewardship of Faith LIGHT ON LITURGY Take care to keep holy the Sabbath day as the Lord, your God, commanded you This is the Third Commandment and it is just as binding today as it was when given to Moses and the Israelites. Sunday worship at Mass fulfills this command and begins the new week with celebra on as we give our me, talents and treasures back to God. SOLEMNITY OF THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD We saw the musical Dear Evan Hansen last fall. The ending is very uplifting, but throughout the show the audience grieves for Evan, whose social anxiety is so terrible that he imagines himself forever waving through a window, with no one hearing, no one seeing. It reminded me of an odd incident several years ago. While walking our dog in the neighborhood, for some reason I turned back to the house I had just passed. There, waving frantically in the window, mouthing Happy New Year, were the darling kids who lived in the house. I waved and smiled and walked on, wondering at the unusual coincidence that, without seeing them in the window and without hearing them calling to me, I turned in their direction in time to see their warm greeting. At Jesus baptism, the heavens opened, the voice of the Father spoke, and the Holy Spirit actually appeared in bodily form as a dove. But Luke doesn t tell us who saw the dove, or who heard the voice. It happened, we know. But who besides Jesus (and the evangelist, who is Spirit-inspired) had eyes to see or ears to hear? If we could train our eyes and ears, I ll bet we too would see the heavens open, and hear the voice from heaven speak. This appearance of the Trinity the Son coming out of the water, the Spirit resting as a dove, the Father speaking from heaven was not a one-time event. Christ is always with us in our dyings and risings, the Spirit is always pointing us to the ways of peace, and the Father is always speaking to us. Or, to put it another way, love and comfort and wisdom are constantly waving at us through Divine windows. Take a moment to look back and notice. Kathy McGovern
