2 2 Welcome to Stella Maris in Baileys Harbor, Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Jacksonport, Sister Bay & Washington Island FREE LUNCHES-For the sixth year, Ephraim Moravian Church will be offering a free, hot monthly lunch, at noon on the third Wednesday of each month through April of The lunches will feature hot soups, sandwiches or salads, desserts and beverages. Dates are January 16, February 20, March 20 and April 17. There is no charge for the meal. Bring a friend for hot food and fellowship this winter! The church is located at 9770 Moravia Street. For more info, call (920) In addition, the Sister Bay Moravian Church offers a free lunch on the first Wednesday of each month at noon, year-round. Winter Weather Cancellations Father Dave, the staff and support personnel will make every attempt to maintain our schedule of masses, events and committee meetings. However, we ask that you never place yourself in harms way to attend them. In the event of a cancellation the following methods of communication will be used: Radio station WDOR (FM 94), TV station WBAY- Green Bay (Channel 2) or our website (Usually if the schools are closed our events are cancelled) Please use your own discretion for safety. Epiphany of the Lord The song "We Three Kings" details the gifts of the Magi, but do you know what you're singing? "Born a king on Bethlehem's plan, gold I bring to crown Him again." This one is the most straightforward - gold symbolizes the Kingship of Christ. "Myrrh is mine: its bitter perfume breathes a life of gathering gloom." Myrrh is an embalming spice. Already at Christ's birth, we have the symbolic reminder of his death. "Frankincense to offer have I. Incense owns a deity nigh." In many religious traditions, incense symbolizes prayers rising to heaven. In some pagan traditions, it is thought to help "call down" the deity. The gift of frankincense symbolizes Jesus' role as the Great High Priest, sanctifying the world through his sacrifice. Adult Faith Formation Happy New Year from your Stella Maris Adult Faith Formation Committee. One of our goals this year is to help all of us live our Stella Maris Mission and make our Vision a reality. Our mission unites all of us here at Stella Maris in the love of Jesus and guided by our patron Mary. We will work on offering many opportunities to help us grow as disciples. We hope one of your goals for this coming year is to build on your faith, prayer life and relationship with God. As adult Christians one of our challenges is to continue to strengthen our relationship with Jesus and grow as disciples on a journey. All relationships start with communication and our relationship with Jesus is no different and that starts with prayer. Life gets hectic and sometimes that prayer time gets shoved aside. Yet starting with just 15 minutes a day can make a huge difference in our lives. Think about joining us at morning Mass even once a week, or perhaps coming to spend a few minutes or more with the weekly Pray with the Pastor. This is quiet time at church where you can come to pray silently in your own way yet be with other Stella Maris parishioners. Join the Monday Morning prayer Group in Fish Creek at 8:00 am to pray and reflect on scripture. Find a Prayer Partner who will meet with you once or twice a month to share prayer and scripture. Alpha is returning this spring. We have also set some dates for all those who have gone through the Alpha experience or any who may be interested in getting more information about Alpha. Our first Alpha Pot Luck will take place in Sister Bay at noon on Wednesday, January 16. We invite all those who have attended Alpha to join us for a pot luck lunch and an Alpha movie. We will end by 1:30 pm. Bring a dish to pass for lunch. All are invited and you are not required to bring a dish to pass. Come just to share a meal and hear more about Alpha. Christian Service & Responsibility Remember the suffering of every person in your heart. Then bring them all to God in your prayers. WHERE DO YOUR DONATIONS GO? $500 was given to the Fish Creek YMCA for the Northern Door Literacy Program. Two classes teaching English as a second language are available weekly. The class and child care are provided free of charge. Our $500 given to Lakeshore CAP enabled them to continue their work of promoting self-sufficiency and well being through various programs including home buyer assistance, emergency rental and food assistance, parenting classes, food pantry, juvenile restitution, job training and internships.

STURGEON BAY COMMUNITY BLOOD DRIVE-at St. Peters Lutheran Church, 108 W Maple on Monday, January 7 from 12 noon to 6 pm and Tuesday, January 8 from 9 am to 3 pm. The novena highlights many facets of respecting each other s God-given dignity, especially by respecting human life at every state and in every circumstance. Each day of the novena provides a different intercession, reflection, information item and suggested action. Knights of Columbus-The Knights provided 192 Hams for Christmas to Feed My People at great price from Our friends at Main Street Market who also donated an extra case to make a great Christmas for a lot of families in Door County. The Knights thank the Callsen families for all their help and donation. Remember the January meeting is January 8th at 7:30 pm. 4 5 The Epiphany of the Lord-January 6, 2019 Worship and Music Column King? The Wise Men (Magi) took their long journey into one more kingdom. Courteous, they visit its monarch, not realizing that he was the infamous Herod. Every amenity took place, I suppose: formal welcome, diplomatic over-do, huge meals, fine drinks. Excesses. Finally, when the moment arrived, the Magi posed their innocent question, something like this: So, where is this newborn king of the Jews? We have read the signs and know of his birth. If he were born today, I wonder where his birthplace would be? They rely on Herod for truth, since, obviously, such an infant would be Herod s next-in-line. But this question turns Herod s heart upside down. He maintained diplomatic balance, temporizing, promising to find an answer and finally, skillfully, ending the meeting for that night. But with insides in turmoil. Newborn King? No, no, no! I am the king! My lineage is the only answer to such a usurper. Do something, do something! But what? Ah, seek out your chief priests and scribes! He does. He charms them with his version of a simple question, an idle interest. Do you experts, busy studying day and night, do you know anything about the long-predicted Messiah figure we used to hope for? If he were born today, I wonder where his birthplace would be? Without hesitation, they reply, in Bethlehem of Judea, where the great King David was born! These experts knew scriptures well, as Herod did not. The newborn Messiah would be David s successor, shepherd of the people Israel, fulfillment of everything the Jewish people had awaited for centuries. The Herodian head swirls. Can you picture it? At last he forms a plan. Kill him. Herod will tell the Magi the place to look and they will search out the baby, giving Herod the locale and the kill! He makes his way across his halls and utters, approximately, the following words: Bethlehem is the place he will be born! Somewhere around Bethlehem! All you have to do is find him. Oh, and of course, let me know so that I may do him homage too! Herod s lust for power has to banish love in favor of control. He has to compete, even with God, even with God s Christ. This is the same offer, notice, that Satan will give to Jesus thirty years later in the desert. You can control the whole world, if you will only fall down and worship me. Help me defeat God. What Herod and Satan are grabbing for is in no way related to what Jesus lived and died for. For their part, they wanted to become bigger and bigger, to stretch out to infinity. Jesus wanted to become less and less, to become transparent, just as love is. Heavy, selfish greed could demolish such a heavenly plan, couldn t it? It surely could seem to. For Herod it certainly did seem to. The Christmas child s weakness formed the only answer to such evil. It showed what God had in mind. Tender, unfearing openness to love. In our sinfulness, we tend to scoff at such an idea. A Holy Family could never win out, could it? Evil will triumph in the end, won t it? The cross can do what Herod could not, but what Satan could. Won t it? Maybe. Or maybe not. Infant Baptism The baptism of new babies and young children revitalizes our faith community. Please contact the parish office to make arrangements for baptism. Adult Initiation The Catholic Church is always enriched whenever any adult chooses to be Catholic. Adults wishing to be baptized, or baptized adults wishing to be confirmed, the RCIA program is available. Reconciliation God s great mercy is something to be celebrated. Ritually we Catholics experience God s unconditional love in the sacrament of reconciliation. Our pastor is available for this sacrament on the 1st Thursday of the month from 5:00-6:00 pm at our Baileys Harbor site (except holidays) and by appointment. Sacrament of Matrimony A faith-filled wedding is a joyful time for the couple and the parish. Our parish wants to have all weddings here be the best possible. The couple must meet with the pastor before a date can be reserved. Please contact the parish office at least 12 months in advance to begin preparation. Ministry to the Sick Everyone needs extra compassion and care when his or her health is not at its best. As a parish, we try to meet that need. Communal anointing Masses take place twice yearly, with individual anointing done when requested. Parishioners in the hospital, nursing home or other institution are encouraged to notify the office to arrange for visits or communion.
