This ritual reminds us of our unity with the Archbishop. At the bishop s mass in the early church, pieces of the host went out and were put into the chalices at all the masses said by his priests. Every priest remembers to say the bishop s name before that in the consecration prayer. What this tells us is that our Archbishop is important to us. We need to respect and obey him. This weekend is the Archbishop s Catholic Appeal (ACA) Commitment weekend. The temptations of our modern world beg us to question authority. Power and money go hand in hand with personal independence and control. We don t like it when people tell us what to do. When it comes to our money; forget about it. So says our world. But back in our minds our conscience gets the best of us. We know the bishop has moral authority and his advice is paramount. Please respect and obey Archbishop Aquila and do our best to be generous to the ACA. After all, we are united with the Archbishop at every mass. Our rosary begins at 8:30 am following the 8:00 am mass. Please join us at the Ten Commandment Monument located on our parish grounds. We will meet on the following Saturdays: June 3rd July 1st August 5 September 2nd October 7th November 4th December 2nd Learning about our Saints and Reliquaries Why do we need to venerate the saints? The Church invites and encourages the faithful to honor the saints by venerating their relics and images. They have always been a significant part of the life of the Church. Since the fourth century, relics were deposited in the altars of the Church during their dedication. Veneration is the honor we give to the saints, especially the Blessed Virgin Mary. Contrary to what other Christians and non-christians believe, when we venerate the saints, we do not worship them. There is an essential difference between the divine worship (latria) owed to God and the veneration (dulia) paid to the saints. The honor given to the relics of saints and to their images does not detract from the worship given to God. By honoring the saints, their relics and images, one honors God from whom comes all holiness. The Council of Trent (1563) defended the Christian practice of invoking the prayers of the saints and venerating their relics and burial places. The Church, however, absolutely forbids the selling of sacred relics which are generally accompanied by proper documentation attesting to its authenticity. There are three classes of relics. A first-class relic is a part of the saint s body (this is the part inserted in the altar). A second-class relic is a piece of the saint s clothing or something used by the saint. A third-class relic is an object which has been touched to a first-class relic. So if your rosary, medal, or holy card has touched a first-class relic, you now have custody of a third-class relic! from Mila Glodava s Blog - October 15,

The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few; pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Matthew 9:37 Radical Awareness of Discipleship (RAD) RAD is a gathering of high school age men who are open to following Jesus Christ as Catholic priests. Events are sponsored by the Office of Priestly Vocations of the Archdiocese of Denver and led by Vocations Director, Fr. Ryan O Neill, and seminarians of St. John Vianney Theological Seminary. Retreats include: Prayer, Mass, Small group discussions, Opportunity for Question & Answer with Archbishop Aquila or seminarians, Sports, Food, and Friendship All RAD Retreats are free! Retreats are held at St. John Vianney Seminary (1300 South Steele St., Denver, 80210). 4 Vocation Chalice We need good, holy priests to bring us the Eucharist. Therefore the purpose of our program is to pray for priests and priestly vocations every day. The chalice is the sacred cup that the priest uses at Mass in which the Precious Blood of Jesus is consecrated then given to the faithful. We hope through our efforts and God s grace that this spiritual devotion will plant the seed of a priestly vocation in many young men. Host for the week of April 30th is the: Denny Sign up, in the back of the church, to host the Vocation Chalice at your home or in your SVdP classroom! World Day of Prayer for Vocations Today - Sunday, May 7th The purpose of the World Day of Prayer for Vocations is to publicly fulfill the Lord s instruction to, Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2). 7 Catholic Events and Resources Fourth Sunday of Easter I have come that you might have life, and have it in abundance. Who can resist the One who promises that to each of us? I can t. I never have been able to resist Jesus, and that grace has brought me nothing but blessing every day of my life. Imagine Jesus, using the language of sheep-tending, trying to draw the Pharisees into the new life that is their inheritance. He reminds them of the sheep-gate, and how the sheep won t enter until the gate-keeper opens it. The Pharisees just stare at him. Okay, he says, let s try this: the sheep will only follow the good shepherd. They know the voice of the shepherd who truly cares for their welfare, and they won t follow the thieves and robbers. The Pharisees look dumbly ahead. They re just not getting it. LOOK, says an exasperated Jesus. I AM THE GATE. I AM YOUR LIFE, YOUR HOPE, YOUR SECURITY, YOUR PEACE. He can t say it more clearly than that. But how can he be the long-awaited Messiah when he has no army, no generals to command, he breaks the laws of the Sabbath, he let that adulteress go free, and he eats and drinks with sinners? Oh, says Jesus, if today you would just hear my voice. I m calling you that s YOU he s talking to, by the way. Dig deep. Listen with all your heart. Tune out all soul-deadening clamor of the culture. If you seek me, says Jesus, you will find me. If you seek me with all of your heart I will let myself be found by you. Abundant life? Oh, yeah. Call us by name, Good Shepherd. You re coming in loud and clear. Parish Access Code: XFTDNJ for Formed.org Who better to look to for guidance on evangelization than the Apostles and disciples of the early Church? And what better place to read their stories than in the firsthand account of the Acts of the Apostles? In the ten-part series Evangelization and the Acts of the Apostles, Dr. Mary Healy combines insightful biblical study with Church teaching and practical advice to show how modern Catholics can effectively impact their world for Jesus Christ. She explores topics such as the call of Jesus to evangelize, the power of the Sacraments, the role of charisms for building up the Body of Christ, techniques from St. Paul for reaching a secular culture, and more. Using the Lectio Divina approach of reading, reflecting, responding, and contemplating, the accompanying workbook presents classic artistry, penetrating questions, and personal reflection to take the teachings to a deeper level. The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic Wednesday afternoons, 1:30 3 pm in the Mother Cabrini Room Four-week discussion about the four signs of a dynamic Catholic as presented in Matthew Kelly s book - which parishioners received at Easter. May 10 Prayer (chapter 1 & 2) May 17 Study (chapter 3) May 24 Generosity (chapter 4) May 31 Evangelization (chapters 5 & 6) No registration required you are welcome to attend any or all of the sessions.
