2 THE THIRTIETH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME Pastor s Message Dear parishioners Thank you for making a commitment on our renewal of the stewardship of treasure. For those who have yet to make a commitment please fill out a commitment card today. Our need to give is based on the ancient biblical principle. His is the giving of God s portion back to God. That portion is called the tithe. It is 10% of are gross income. God gives us our very breath to live on let alone the skill and the time to do it. Our responsibility is to give the first tenth back to God in thanksgiving for what God has done for us. Mature stewardship involves tithing. Baby steps involve learning how to be charitable and loving. Children learn in this. Many times adults do not advanced passed the way they gave as children. For many of us we have to say it s time to grow up. This kind of giving takes faith. In fact it makes our faith grow, it is a form of evangelization. Please also consider all the other collections that are usually taken that come out of the offertory. Please be generous. Their meetings take place on the first and third Wednesday of the month from 7:15 to 10:00 in the Mother Cabrini Room. Based on the efforts of Father Michael J. McGivney, assistant pastor of St. Mary s Church in New Haven, the Connecticut state legislature on March 29, 1882, officially chartered the Knights of Columbus as a fraternal benefit society that believes in the principles of charity, unity and fraternity. The Knights was formed to render financial aid to members and their families. Mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works. 5 October 29, 2017 Stewardship of Treasure St. Vincent de Paul Parish Stewardship of Treasure Our Stewardship of Treasure continues this weekend. For those who have yet to make a decision, please respond in a manner that reflects your trust, love and gratitude to God. We pray: Seminary Appeal This is also Stewardship of Vocations Weekend. Seminarian to speak at all Masses. That each one of us will be open to God s call through our participation in Stewardship of Treasure... Remember, God cannot be outdone in generosity. The annual Seminaries Appeal provides significant financial support needed to prepare men for the priesthood in the Archdiocese of Denver. This fund drive helps to support the daily operating needs of the two seminaries including: funding for academic faculty and programs; food and housing; seminarian health insurance, and ongoing building maintenance. Please pray for our Parishioners, David Hall and Jacob Machado, who are St. John Vianney Spirituality Year seminarians. In lieu of a second collection, St. Vincent de Paul Parish will donate $10,000 to support our future priests. Stewardship of Vocations Please pray for Dominick Poletto who is entering the Seminary of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Denton, Nebraska and Frater Clement Hurtgen, O.Praem., Brother at St. Michael s Abby in California. Traveling Chalice We need good, holy priests to bring us the Eucharist. Therefore the purpose of our program is to pray for priests and priestly vocations every day. The chalice is the sacred cup that the priest uses at Mass in which the Precious Blood of Jesus is consecrated then given to the faithful. We hope through our efforts and God s grace that this spiritual devotion will plant the seed of a priestly vocation in many young men. 7 Catholic Events and Resources (continued) October 29, 2017 Zagreb, Croatia Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time My friends Jen and Paul have ADORABLE four-year-old twins, and were surprised and thrilled to welcome hilarious Max two years ago. Then, one month ago, they arrived home from the hospital with you guessed it a second pair of twin boys. Yes, that s five kids under four. Sophia cried at first when she realized she was now surrounded by brothers, but her twin, Lucas, consoled her with this: Don t worry, I ll bet the next time mommy has twins it will be girls. Mm-hm. The happiest place on earth is their living room couch, where the babies sleep and the three older kids snuggle up for stories. Even though their picture bible doesn t tell the terrible King Herod story, Sophia and Lucas know it, and today they are telling me everything they would do to protect Baby Jesus from the awful king. If Baby Jesus was over here, says Lucas, and King Herod asked me where he was I d point the other way and say, he s over THERE. And Sophia adds, And I would never, ever let him find Baby Jesus. Jesus is nice, and King Herod is mean. They re utterly addicting, these five beautiful children, and their hearts are the perfect shape for Jesus. They remind me of a line from the prayer that every Jew is required to pray each morning and evening, and the line that Jesus, the perfect Jew, recited for the scholar of the law: You shall love the Lord with your whole heart and soul and mind. It s not hard at all, loving God with everything we have. We just have to find our four-year-old selves again, so ready to love God with everything we are.
