It is an article of faith. It is the highest article of faith that we have. It it is based on the idea that we are created by God in God's image. God is holy and human life is as holy as God. This is called human dignity. There are confused Catholics who think that "pro-life" messages at church is the Church being political. Because we fight for human dignity we are in solidarity with the poor. It is confused thinking to be for immigrants without defending their dignity. You cannot have one without the other. To frame this issue, Archbishop Aqulia told people to vote with an "informed" conscience. He said if you are "pro-choice" and are for assisted suicide, "You are listening to The Evil One " Our conscience will always be misled by the devil. The anniversary of Roe V Wade is this week. Pray for the end of abortion. Please be pro-life. Sincerely in Christ, Prayer Request Our ill parish members & rela ves: Becky Russel Ben Hall Tom Lamberton Our deceased parish members & rela ves: Don Moen MaryAnn Caldwell Veterans and deceased members of our Armed Forces who serve selflessly to protect our way of life. 3 Stewardship of Prayer & Faith Parish and School Holy Hour sponsored by Respect Life W P C U Unity. What does "unity" mean? For those of us who claim Christ as our model of living and savior of humanity, it means we are one. This year the Week of Prayer for Chris an Unity has as its theme the Scripture cita on 2 Corinthians 5: "For the love of Christ impels us, once we have come to the convic on that one died for all; therefore all have died." If that is not a mandate for unity, then there is none. We are one in the death of Christ and therefore live in unity with all other Chris ans. God, who are unity in three holy persons--father, Son, and Holy Spirit-- you have called us to live in peace with all people. You have also called us to work toward unity in purpose to spread the Gospel to all na ons. Graciously give us the courage and strength to work toward unity, and act toward each other as brothers and sisters. We ask this in the unity of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen. C R D In Catholic social tradi on, "rights" correspond to the treatment every person deserves not because of background or individual merit, but by virtue of being created in the image and likeness of God. As followers of Christ, we are called to a concern for our brothers and sisters. This means that, in acknowledging rights, we also acknowledge responsibili es. St. John Paul II writes, "every man is his 'brother's keeper', because God entrusts us to one another" ( Evangelium Vitae, 19). In our complicated world, it can be easy to get overwhelmed by public policy. However, we are not exempt from engaging in public life. Today, we remember that we are all called to work to ensure that social structures uphold human dignity and support true human flourishing. Thursday, January 24th, 2019 Adora on from 4:15 to 5:15 You are invited to share an hour in the presence of the Lord to receive his many graces. We expose the Blessed Sacrament and experience silence with a little light music at the opening and closing. The Sacrament of reconciliation will be available. Our Holy Hours will meet on the following Thursdays: Jan 31 Feb 14 Feb 7 Feb 21 Please plan on taking a few moments of your time to reflect on your many blessings! For further information, contact our parish office at Tuesday Rosary with Eucharis c Adora on Tuesday, January 22nd 8:30 to 9:30 Please join in praying the Rosary with Eucharistic Adoration after the 8:00 am Mass each Tuesday. We begin our prayer at 8:30 am. Feel free to invite others to come and enjoy the healing touch of our Blessed Mother. Day of Prayer for the Legal Protec on of funborn Children Pope Francis has said that respect for life is not just about the unborn child in the womb, but also about the least of our brothers and sisters. Yes, it is even upon the undocumented resident alien who has no voice but ours. As followers of Jesus Christ, we are all called to protect the voiceless. Let us pray... Good and gracious God, you blew into our nostrils the breath of life. You are the One to whom we owe our very existence. Give us the courage to take that unpopular posi on of protec ng those who have no voice, the unborn child in the womb to the person taking his or her last breath. The life you have given us is a gi beyond measure. Embolden us to speak the truth about protec ng the child, the elderly, and the one without a voice in the public square. With thankful hearts, we ask all this of the One God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen. 3

Most churches had a tower that was the highest point in the community. The church tower was a lookout, a symbol of pres ge and the most logical place to mount the bell that would call the faithful to Mass, announce weddings and funerals, and give the me three mes a day. The bell was rung at 6, 12 and 6. Individual mepieces were not available to most people and so they relied on the church bell. Eventually, with advances in metallurgy and building techniques, church towers began to climb higher and the numbers of bells housed in the towers also increased. Bells were made in diatonic pitches, and early bell ringers began to make algorithms, they called changes, which were quite intricate. Imagine then, if you will, living across from a church where the bell ringers prac ced for hours on the changes planned for that Sunday. In order to remain friends with the community, the bell ringers had small handbells made, that were able to be played indoors, and not heard all over the countryside. So somewhere around 1700, handbells were being manufactured in England. It wasn t ll 1902 that handbells were introduced to America. Most American handbells are being produced in Pennsylvania. In England, the handbell players are called a team. In America, the handbell players are called a choir. If you're interested in joining our handbell choir at St. Vincents, please contact our music director for more informa on. Danielle Lombardi at Ext WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT? WHO'S IT FOR? 5 Stewardship of Time & Talent (Continued) Sandwiches for the Poor On the third Sunday of the month a er 9:30 Mass, families gather in the cafeteria to make sandwiches for the poor. We are in need of families to host a month throughout the year to help coordinate the set-up, sandwich making, clean up and delivery of the sandwiches. It only takes a couple hours on a Sunday morning to make a huge difference. It is a great way for you to come together with your family and show them the importance of helping the poor in our community. We would be grateful for any help you can give, even if it is for just one month. If you have any ques ons or would like to volunteer, please contact Sherri Doyle at ext. 208 or her at Sherri@saintvincents.org. Our next date to make sandwiches is January 20th. Please feel free to join others in the cafeteria and take that me to see what it is all about and ask ques ons. Stewardship of Faith LIGHT ON LITURGY We place our fingers in the bowl of Holy Water when entering the Church to remind us of our Bap sm when we were gra ed onto the family tree of Christ. It is as children of God that we now gather to listen, learn, pray and partake of the paschal mystery. Second Sunday in Ordinary Time There are different kinds of talents, thank God, and the Holy Spirit breathes in each of them. The brilliance it takes to put together parish websites, for example, blesses the visitor who goes there, perhaps, to connect with the Church for the first time. To one is given the skill to create parish databases, to another the savvy to create the easiest way for us to contribute financially to the parish. These are some pretty technical skills, but it s the same God who gives the energy and passion it takes to make these things happen. To some are given so much love of children that our religious education classes and schools abound in joy and love. There are even some-god bless these unique people=who give their lives for the formation of adolescents. A thousand blessings on their heads. Some have the expertise to serve as administrators and pastoral associates, carefully watching over to assure the sacramental and spiritual needs of the parish are met. Some oversee the many outreaches to shelters, sandwich lines, and safe houses, and some work with people one-on-one through the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Some devote their time to praying for each of us. Yes, there are parishioners who do this, every day, their whole lives. They take the lists of the sick and dying, and pray. There is one dear couple, in a parish where I served years ago, who have prayed for me at breakfast every day for fifteen years. This is the tip of the iceberg, of course. We haven t even talked about music, and scripture, and liturgy, or even priesthood, for heaven s sake. Church, do we know how rich we are? How will I use my energy and talents to work for the Kingdom of God this year? Kathy McGovern

6 Healing Mass There will be a Healing Mass Monday, January 28th at 7pm. Come and receive the healing touch of our Lord. St. Vincent de Paul Society The Fruits of Your Bounty Thanks to the generous dona ons you made to the weekly offering, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to help families in need in our area. We just want to tell you about one family we helped this past week. Danny works a good job but needed major surgery. His employer sent in his FLMA paperwork late, so he did not receive his check on me. He and his wife have three children and live frugally. They are a beau ful and loving family. They received a demand no ce from the landlord and had only 3 days to pay their rent. Thanks to your generosity, the Society was able to help Danny and his family stay in their home. They, and so many others, are able to remain in their homes because of your help. God loves those who love the poor. It will make generous gi s to many causes, if I am a generous giver. It will bring others into worship, if I invite and bring them in.
