2 8TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Pastor's Message Dear Parishioners, Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent this week. A Lenten resolution is a commitment to God to focus upon improving ourselves. I suggest keeping it simple. Focus on one thing and do it well. The Letter to the Hebrews is what I will read this Lent. I have done it before and I like the effect that it has on me. I have not done that resolution for a few years now, and I welcome the challenge of getting comfortable with that book once again. I have a new Bible Commentary and it will give me a reason to read that section in that book. I will spend some time on study and some time on just reflecting. I will let that book sink into me. Reading the Bible during Lent is something I learned in the monastery. We need to be close to the Bible and make it our friend. Just as we must spend time with a friend, we must spend time with the Bible. If we do, we will become familiar with God in a special way. In the beginning, You fashioned us in the Garden. You dignified dust with the Breath of Life. You made us in Your image and likeness. You led Your people through the dust of the Sinai wilderness to the Promised Land. You overcame tempta on in the dry desert. You healed the blind with dirt and clay. Seasonal Reflec on 8th Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Casimir We live in a culture that tells children, "Follow your dreams! Be who you want to be!" It might be hard to imagine the courage it took to be St. Casimir. A prince second in line for the throne of Poland, the young man had great expectations placed upon him. Inspired by a devout tutor, St. Casimir developed a deep faith. As a teenager, he would often sleep on the ground, reject courtly finery for plain clothes, and dedicate long hours to prayer. He even made a private commitment to celibacy. Casimir's avoidance of a military engagement made his father furious. The king imprisoned his own son. The episode confirmed to St. Casimir that he served a higher King, Jesus Christ. He would spend the rest of his life in prayer, study, and service to the poor. When we need courage to do what is right, St. Casimir, pray for us! "A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit. A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good, but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil; for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks." - Lk 6:43, 45 3

4 8TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME St. Vincent de Paul Society The Fruits of Your Bounty Thanks to the generous dona ons you made to the weekly offering, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to help families in need in our area. We just want to tell you about one family we helped this past week. Rick is a single man recovering from bone cancer. Currently he is receiving disability benefits but is set to begin a new job in insurance next week. He is unable to pay this month s rent. Thanks to you, we were able to help Rick and so many others who are in similar difficult situa ons. God loves those who love the poor. Stewardship of Time & Talent 2019 Men s Retreat The 18th Annual Men's Retreat is the third weekend of Lent: March 22-24, 2019 at YMCA of the Rockies - Snow Mountain Ranch, Granby, Colorado, near Winter Park. Both the gospel and that funny section from Sirach uncover the deep truth about human nature: that which we spend time ruminating on will find its way out of our brains, into our hearts, and out of our mouths. And then comes the backpedaling, the I was on Ambien and don t remember a thing excuses, the endless attempts to retrieve words that, as St. Philip Neri demonstrated so effectively, are like feathers shaken from a pillow. If that Sirach reading seems strange to you, you re right. It s only in the years where Lent is late that we get as far as the eighth or ninth Sundays in Ordinary Time. Since we switch from reading Matthew, Mark, and Luke over a three-year cycle, and that Sirach reading is chosen to harmonize with today s reading from Luke, in order to hear that reading we have to be in Cycle C (so every three years) and have a late Lent. But this gives me a chance to extol the book s humor, its insight into human nature, its beautiful treatises on friendship, its savvy money advice, and, sadly, to warn about its dreadful comments about women. You ll enjoy it and wince at it, but you won t be bored. We have the first-century Christians to thank for rescuing it from oblivion, and the Catholic Church for continuing to use it and copy it. By the way, the lectionary is the brilliant brainchild of Vatican II, and has been adapted by so many other Christian traditions that on most Sundays, all Christians who share the liturgical calendar hear the same readings.
