TODAY S READINGS First Reading As a bridegroom rejoices in his bride, so God rejoices in the chosen ones (Isaiah 62:1-5). Psalm Proclaim his marvelous deeds to all the nations (Psalm 96). Second Reading All the varied gifts in the Christian community are from one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:4-11). Gospel Rejoicing at a wedding celebration in Cana, Jesus replenishes the wine supply (John 2:1-11). A VISIBLE GOD We find it difficult to convey ideas to people unless we can actually show them something, demonstrate what we mean. God, who is invisible and truly beyond human understanding, apparently faces the same difficulty. People want to see, not just listen to an idea. So God gave us Jesus Christ, God made visible in the world. During these past weeks we have seen how Jesus was revealed as an infant to the shepherds and the magi, and then began his adult public life at his baptism by John. Today s Gospel reading tells us of his first sign, providing wine for the wedding guests at Cana. Of course, even Jesus, God made visible, was not always easily understood in his own day, nor is he even now. So we have to ponder what we see: the poverty and simplicity of his birth, his humility and openness before John the Baptist, his kindness and compassion toward people in their ordinary problems, such as running short of wine at a wedding. If you do not have a permit, please do not park in a handicap space. Thank you. General Information PARISH REGISTRATION: New parishioners are always welcome. You may register in the parish by calling the parish office. Registration forms can be downloaded from the church website or are available at the church office. Also, please notify us when moving out of the parish or when have a change of address. BAPTISM: Parents should be registered in the parish unless they have made other arrangements with the Pastoral Team. Pre-baptismal class is required for both parents and godparents. To schedule a baptism, arrangements must be made by the parents of the child to be baptized, by calling Terry in the Parish Office at Registration for the Baptismal Preparation Class may also be made by calling Terry. MARRIAGE: Make arrangements by contacting the parish office at Must be registered, active, and contributing members six months prior to the wedding. The couple should meet with the priest or deacon prior to setting a wedding date or making plans for the reception. CONFESSIONS: Saturday immediately following the 5:30pm Mass (except the week before and after a Communal Penance Service or if a wedding or parish function is scheduled.) Also available by appointment. FRIENDSHIP SUNDAY is held the 4th Sunday of each month after weekend Masses. Refreshments are served after these Masses. This is also a great way to socialize with your fellow parishioners.

7 Saint John XXIII Catholic Community The Gospel According to Mark Mark now focuses on the build-up to Jesus s death on the cross and begins to use the expression The Way more fully to set the stage for those true disciples who will follow Jesus on the Way. The next story is about giving everything to the poor in order to truly be a disciple. As he went forth on the way, a man came running to him, knelt and asked, Good teacher, what may I do that I may inherit eternal life? (Other Greek transcripts say, inherit the life of the Age ). Jesus answers, Why do you call me good? There is no one good save one God. You know the commandments: Do not commit adultery. Do not murder. Do not steal. Do not bear false witness. Do not defraud. Honor the father of you, and your mother. Most translations use the same words as the Hebrew found in the book of Exodus, Exodus 20: Noticeably absent are the first through third commandments, and the ninth and tenth commandments. Why Mark leaves out half of the ten commandments and adds one from Deuteronomy (Deuteronomy 24:14-15) is unknown. Maybe these are the ones he remembered or perhaps he made the assumption that Jesus s statement that only God is good covers the first three. The young man says he has observed these commandments since his youth. Mark states Jesus looked at him and loved him, as he did with the children previously. Then Jesus says to him, You lack a single thing: Go sell whatever you possess and give to the destitute, and you will have a treasury in heaven; then come follow me. This allows Mark to present another serious consideration about following Jesus, and about wealth. The young man becomes sad and went away in sorrow because he had many possessions. Jesus then says to the disciples, How hard it will be for those possessing wealth to enter into the Kingdom of God. It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God. The disciples become amazed. Now Jesus says, Children, how hard it is to enter the Kingdom of God. They say among themselves, Can any of them then be saved? Jesus then says, For men this is impossible, but not for God; for all things are possible for God. Luke changes this to for a camel to enter through the eye of the needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God. Luke then repeats Mark s statement that all things are possible for God. Before realizing that Luke had Mark s Gospel, scholars thought the eye of the needle may have been a very narrow gate; if a camel was loaded down with all kinds of goods, it would have to leave this load behind. There is no evidence of such a gate on any of the most ancient maps of Jerusalem or Israel. Fr.
