Monday Evening: Fully aware of the human condition, God the Father sends His Son, Jesus, to be our guide on our search. Tuesday Evening: Jesus fulfills the mission given to Him by His Father by setting a clear path for finding the God we long for and who longs for us. A graduate of Our Lady of Victory School, Quigley Preparatory Seminary, and the University of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein, Fr. Dore was ordained a priest in the Archdiocese of Chicago in Following ordination, he served as associate pastor at St. Priscilla, Chicago ( ) and St. Hubert, Hoffman Estates ( ), then as resident and part-time associate at St. Justin Martyr ( ) and St. Cyprian, River Grove ( ), while serving as director of the Youth Division of the Office of Catechesis. He served as pastor at Our Lady of Ransom, Niles ( ) and St. Giles, Oak Park ( ). Fr. 4 This year s St. Luke Dinner Dance & Auction paid tribute to the Legacy of Love bestowed on our parish school by honorees Bob and Marcia Coleman. The couple, who have contributed above and beyond through the years, said they have grown to love the St. Luke community as family. A spirited live auction, competitive silent auctions, and additional outright donations all but guaranteed that this would be a successful fund-raiser to help our National Blue Ribbon school continue to provide a quality Catholic education for our community. Once again, this fund-raiser exhibits the strength and commitment of our parish community, commented Sheila Price, St. Luke s Director of Stewardship and Development. 5 As our two catechumens continue their final preparations for Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil on April 4, we will call them forward at Mass these next three Sundays for special prayers. This will take place next Sunday at the 9:00 Mass, on March 15 at the 9:00 Mass, and on March 22 at the 10:30 Mass. Let us keep these catechumens Zachary Bearden and Luke McConnell in our daily prayers, as well as our adult converts Ray Nixon, Beth Phelan, and Austin Zimmer and our additional candidates for Confirmation Rosemary McConnell and Collin Sugg. As we accompany them on their Lenten journey to Easter, may we also be renewed by their example of faith and trust in God. The Stations of the Cross are prayed each Friday in Lent at 6:00 pm. After following in the footsteps of Jesus, everyone is invited to a community supper in Waldron Hall. The meal is simple a meatless main course, vegetable and fruit trays, bread, and water. This week the meal will be prepared and served by the St. Luke Women s Club. Reservations to the rectory office ( ) will help us plan for the food, but they are not necessary. There will be a basket at the Lenten Supper for a free-will offering. Any excess funds will be given to the John Clark Haitian Project. And God said that these things are good. We find God in these good things, and so we must take care of creation, both for ourselves and for all of the human family. This week takes us to the coffee highlands of Nicaragua, where we re called to protect both the goodness of creation and the livelihoods of struggling families. Thought for the week: How will this week s fast remind us of the sacredness of God s creation and our duty to protect it? St. Agatha Ministries Next Meeting on March 22 Please mark your calendars for Sunday morning, March 22. We ll be starting with 9:00 am Mass at St. Luke Church. Plan to join us to learn about this wonderful program that matches St. Luke families with students who need help continuing their Catholic education in high school! By the threefold discipline of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, the Church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All of the faithful should undertake serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe penitential days totally or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious. Abstinence from meats is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. March 1, 2015 Second Sunday of Lent 5

We realize that we need to address bullying at all levels of a student s experience, so we have implemented the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. This program addresses bullying at the school-wide, classroom, and individual levels. We have asked our students to fill their neighbors buckets with kindness, appreciation, and love, based on the heart-warming children s book Have You Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud. We have also asked our students to look beyond themselves, to walk in their neighbors shoes, and to show empathy for their neighbors. To help provide additional strategies and coping skills to our St. Luke Parish School 4 th through 8 th graders, we invited Mrs. Carrie Goldman to St. Luke Parish School. Mrs. Goldman is an award-winning author of Bullied: What Every Parent, Teacher and Kid Needs to Know About Ending the Cycle of Fear. Mrs. Goldman s insightful presentation addressed bullying prevention, intervention, reconciliation, and social conflict. Thank you, Mrs. Goldman! 7 The next event for the Prime Timers will be a lunch at the Wheat Café on March 18. This is the student-run café at the College of DuPage. We will have a threecourse lunch: soup, salad, and main course. The cost is $17.00 plus tip. The lunch is at 11:30 am, so we will be leaving the Hospitality House at 10:45. Below are some scenes from our Annual Tea on Valentines Day when the Hospitality House was filled with lots of tasty sweets and lively conversation. istockphoto.com Thanks to a very spirited Father Ken Baker from St. Cletus Parish, our Spirit Day was a wonderful success as all 59 of our 8th grade Confirmation candidates came together on Presidents Day. We had seven wonderful table leaders, who helped engage the students. The day included cookies sent by parents, fun games, deep sharing, Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and much more. Father Ken, as the students called him, had a wonderful way of weaving together ways of looking at one another from the inside and outside, like Michael Jackson s song Man in the Mirror. It was an amazing day! commented one student. [This] unforgettable experience, remarked another, changed the way I think of Church. When these young people can say they felt involved and never got bored, then Spirit Day did have a way of breaking into each one s life. Non-perishable food items that are most needed are: cereal (hot or cold) coffee and tea peanut butter pasta and rice canned vegetables, fruits, and beans canned soups and stews. In addition to non-perishable food, the most needed items are personal care items that cannot be purchased with food stamps: diapers, hand soap, toothpaste, toilet paper, wipes, and tissues. Cash donations are used to buy fresh vegetables and fruit, eggs and meat, when available, from the Chicago Food Depository.
