Register online at Family Connection Luke 4:21-30 Jesus' statement that no prophet is accepted in his home town reminds us that it is often difficult to hear a challenging message from those who know us best, even if it is true. Perhaps we remember and even regret this aspect of our childhood and adolescence. We may have overlooked the wisdom and guidance of our parents, while allowing the voices of others teachers, friends, and counselors to carry more weight, even when these people were telling us the same thing. Perhaps this developmental stage is unavoidable. Perhaps as we have matured, we have come to a new appreciation for our parents and others whose perspective and experience we once rejected. Today's Gospel provides an opportunity to talk about and to learn from such experiences. As you gather as a family, consider proverbs or other wise sayings that are familiar to your family ( Blood is thicker than water; All that glitters is not gold. ). Consider what these proverbs mean and whether you believe them to be true. Why or why not? Jesus challenges the people of Nazareth by reminding them of old sayings that seem to have a lot of truth in them. Let's listen to this Gospel and consider what these proverbs mean. Read aloud today's Gospel, Luke 4: Ask: What were the proverbs that Jesus quoted? (Physician, cure yourself; No prophet is accepted in his native place.) Consider the meaning of these proverbs and look for examples from your own family life that show their truth. Consider how your family might accept one another's wisdom and guidance and not reject the prophets in your midst. Conclude by praying together the Prayer to the Holy Spirit. St. Anthony Summer Mission Trip--We are looking for jobs to complete for parishioners! The summer high school mission team is looking to fundraise for their upcoming Mission trip to Topeka, Kansas. They are looking for some odds and ends jobs to complete in order to help cover the costs of the trip. Sacrament of Marriage: Please contact St. Anthony s office ( ) at least 9 months before your anticipated wedding date to begin your spiritual preparation. One or both persons must be registered and actively living their faith at St. Mary s Church for at least 6 months to celebrate their wedding here. All couples planning to be married at our parishes must attend a Pre-Cana program, Natural Family Planning program and FOCCUS evaluation. For those who were former members here, they must be registered and actively living their faith at the parish where they reside. Sacrament of Baptism: Baptisms are celebrated during Mass on Saturdays & Sundays (not during Lent or Advent). A family must be registered & actively living their faith at St. Mary s Church for 6 months to assure faith will be shared with the new born child. Godparents must also be registered in a Catholic parish or other Christian church & actively living their faith. A Baptism Class is held and is required for all parents. We ask that both parents attend this class together. Godparents are also encouraged and welcome to attend. For more information, please call the parish office ( ). Trip to Italy..Padua to Rome-- Fr. Chuck will be leading a pilgrimage to Italy next summer, June 12th to June 22nd, Leave on June 12th to arrive and Celebrate our parish feast day of St. Anthony of Padua with mass at the Cathedral of St. Anthony, Padua following by a Feast day dinner. We will then spend nine days traveling to and enjoying Venice, Florence, Assisi, and Rome. We will tour many famous sites such as St. Peter s Basillica, the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, Trevi Fountain, Paantheon, Colosseum, The Benedictine Abbey of Monte Casino, built in 529. We will see the Basillica of St. Mark s in Venice, the Basillicas of St. Francis and St. Clare in Assisi, and many other famous spots. In this weekend s first Reading from the Book of Jeremiah, we hear God s call to stand up and tell them all that I command you. With the onslaught of negativity and secularism that can come from television, radio, social media and a variety of other mediums, we should be reminded that our Heavenly Father calls us to stand for truth, He calls us to share the good news. How do we accomplish this within our lives, both professionally and personally? As the principal of St. Anthony Grade School, I have the fortunate opportunity to lead daily prayer with students and staff, to attend school masses, and participate in a variety of Catechetical opportunities, and to be surrounded by some of the most faith-filled individuals I ve met. These experiences and the relationships that have been established as a result, have deepened my faith and caused me to become a better man, spouse and father. That s not to say that every step has been easy or enjoyable, but the fruits of His plan have been more than I could ever have planned for myself. Regardless of your current location in your faith journey, we are called to know Him, to Love Him and to follow Him. As both an educator and a parent, I have a responsibility to help children better hear, understand and follow God s call. Thankfully, we don t have to do this alone. As parents, my wife and I are called to model the way for our children. We are blessed to be surrounded by family and friends who offer helping hands and encourage us to stay focused on what s truly important. We also find strength in actively participating in weekly mass and within our parish community retreats like DeColores, mission presentations, adult prayer groups, and our Catholic schools. As we heard in our second reading from First Corinthians, He will show us a still more excellent way faith, hope and love. As our Catholic Schools come off of another jam packed week of exciting activities, I can speak for our Grade School staff in saying that we are certainly energized and motivated to continue encouraging our students to grow in their relationships with Christ Jesus. Today I pray with faith, hope and love that our Heavenly Father continues to deepen and encourage yours. - God Bless!
