1 VOLUME SIXˑ ISSUE SIX JUNE 2017 Gree ngs from the Capital Campaign! It is in moments like these when we give thanks for all those who have supported Trinity throughout our years together, whether few or many. We owe a debt of gra tude for the sacrifices and generous gi s that have impacted our parish and life together. Truly, it is your commitment to our parish s mission that aids our ministries and allows us to grow. Within the next few weeks as we embark on our campaign goal to raise $241,000, please consider ways in which you might get involved as an advanced giver, as a kick-off party planner or something else you feel called to do. Gi s of all kinds are essen al to the campaign's success. Our Faith, Our Future When someone wants to discuss an opportunity with me, I generally get concerned. A MONTHLY When someone tells me they NEWSLETTER OF believe I would be a good fit TRINITY CHURCH for the opportunity, I really WAUWATOSA get concerned. When someone tells me the opportunity might involve fundraising, I usually arrange a mee ng in another city that is mul ple plane transfers away. Okay, yes, I run. So why didn t I run this me? Was it that I was wearing a suit and e that I had just dry cleaned and did not want to get sweaty? Was it that I have an older body that does not move as fast as it used to? Was it that my hearing was not as sharp as it used to be and instead of fundraising, I heard fun tas ng and thought I was being invited to a Foyer Dinner or potluck? No one really knows. What I do know is that I did not run. I did not say you must have confused me with someone else. I did not say No Thank You. What did I do? I took some me to reflect. No, really. I did. I know many people say they need to reflect on the opportunity, but I actually did. And during that reflec on period, I realized how honored I was to be asked. I realized how humbled I was to be considered for the opportunity. I realized how fortunate I was to be associated with such a wonderful parish, how blessed I was to be part of a vibrant, growing, loving and energe c family of friends. I con nued to struggle over the fundraising element part I don t even like passing the offering plates when I usher. But then I got it. This is not about fundraising at all. This is not about money. This is not really a capital campaign it s more about making a difference and being there to support my fellow family members. This is a sharing of talents and inves ng in the future of Trinity Church. It is posi oning the church s resources and tools to be best used by the parish and for the inside: Friday Fellowship....2 Confirma on Class.2 Episco Bishop's Visita on..2 Hai Fundraiser...3 Legacy Sunday Rummage Sale.. 5 Summer Coffee Hour...5 Parish Picnic Vaca on Bible School..6 Senior Warden Word...6 Neighborhood Outreach...6 Red Door Clothes...7 (Con nued on page 2) 1

2 (Con nued from page 1) future of Trinity s outreach and inreach (this may not be a real word) efforts. It is a way to align our church resources with the needs, talents and amazing poten al of the parish, to recognize the changes in the mix of the parish based on new members, changing needs of long me members, changes in the community and an cipated needs of genera ons to come, and the changes in Christ s Church and the world. This is a campaign for Christ, a campaign of Our Faith, Our Future, and I am excited, humbled and honored to be a member of it. As Father Manning suggested in an Easter sermon, I am carrying my palm cross with pride and looking for opportuni es to discuss my beliefs and faith. I will also be looking for opportuni es to discuss this campaign for Christ with each of you, my family of friends. As an added joy and benefit for me, I have the pleasure of co-chairing this effort with Jen Ve rus. You will be hearing more from Jen, me and others, but in the interim, please, let s talk. In peace, Bob Love, campaign co-chair TIDINGS (USPS ) Is published monthly by Trinity Church, 1717 Church Street, Wauwatosa, WI Periodical postage paid at Milwaukee, WI POSTMASTER: Send address changes to Tidings, 1717 Church Street, Wauwatosa, WI First Friday Family Fellowship will take a hiatus from monthly gatherings during June, July and August. 4 Legacy Sunday is June 11, 2017 To Honor Members of the Helen Hodges Walker Legacy Society Trinity Sunday, June 11, 2017 is Legacy Sunday. During the services that Sunday we will honor current members of the Helen Hodges Walker Legacy Society for Trinity Church. A Legacy Society is used by many charitable and religious organiza ons to promote the use of planned (legacy) gi s. It is designed to be a publicly acknowledged group whose members have made a financial commitment such as a planned gi or by sta ng that they have included a bequest for Trinity Church or the Trinity Founda on in their estate plans. The Helen Hodges Walker Legacy Society encourages members of Trinity Church to provide a legacy gi benefi ng Trinity or the Founda on. Gi s may be in the form of a designa on in their will, naming Trinity as a beneficiary in their life insurance policy or re rement plan (401k or IRA), or in the form of a charitable remainder trust or other estate planning vehicle. Helen Hodges Walker was a member of Trinity Church who, a er her death, le a bequest of $ in her will. In 1932 the parish voted to use that bequest as the ini al contribu on to the Trinity Endowment Fund (the Trinity Founda on). In the ensuing eighty-plus years the fund has grown to $1.3 million through the generosity of many of those who have gone before us and through prudent investment management. The Founda on annually contributes in excess of $63,000 to the parish annual budget. The legacy society raises awareness of the importance of legacy gi s to the church. It is a way in which we thank all those who have included the parish or Founda on in their estate plans. If you are interested in more informa on about the Legacy Society there are brochures in the tract racks, or you may contact Mike Hagon at or by at mhagon@wi.rr.com. 4

And Now..A Word From The Senior Warden I will be taking June and July off from the Tidings, but will be back in August. I will keep the parish in my prayers for a safe and happy summer. I feel blessed to be your senior warden and welcome any ques ons you may have at any me. I can be reached at jill.paradowski@gmail.com or Watch for more informa on on the Trinity Auc on, the Capital Campaign, and many other events that bring us together as a parish. Blessing to each of you. Last month Jill Paradowski men oned a survey about working at Habitat for Humanity. The survey has been delayed with the closing of RDC. The new survey will s ll include assessing interest in helping Habitat during Rock the block ac vi es scheduled later this year, but in addi on we will determine if there is interest in a variety of other ac vi es that can be done by adults and children, at Trinity and out in the community. I have found several community programs who could use our help, but would like to contact more. THIS IS where you can help. Please list any organiza on who might use our help (not just money, but things like blankets for Zilber Hospice and snack bags for Kathy s house) on the sheet in the narthex, or me at Jill.Paradowski@ gmail.com. Once we determine interest in these ac vi es we will pick a few and make it happen. Please answer the survey which will be in the bulle n later this month and also via computer so we can determine what our next step might be for Outreach. Thanks for all you do to make Trinity a special place. 6

7 By Jane Johnson Red Door Clothes Ten Years of a Joint Ministry In early Spring of 2007, Mother Debra Trakel and several people from St James Episcopal Church came to Trinity asking if we thought we could do a clothing ministry with them. Gust Olson and Deacon Ned Howe helped with the handing out of used clothing at The Avenue Store and it was closing. Trinity parishioners filled out a survey to see if 25 people would be interested in helping with the ministry. When the survey was finished, 25 people had agreed to help. In July of 2007, a group of people from Trinity and St. James met and thus was the birth of Red Door Clothes. Next came the mo o: Clothing and Caring for God's People and preparing for our opening on October 20th. In August, we moved the racks and boxes of clothing from Redeemer Lutheran Church on 19th and Wisconsin Avenue to St. James Episcopal Church on 8th and Wisconsin Avenue. Out from the first floor of Redeemer Church, into and up to the second floor of St. James on a very hot and humid day. We chose to be open the first and third Saturdays of every month. On opening day we had a blessing of the ministry and served about 75 people, mainly men. We now serve about 215 men, women and children each me we are open. The re red group of AT&T Pioneers have donated underwear since the beginning. The AT&T Pioneers have received several large grants for Red Door Clothes and Joan Haver has joined us on open days and sor ng days with several of her friends. AT&T Pioneers bring bags of dona ons to their monthly mee ngs. An extension of Red Door Clothes from 2 Episcopal churches ministry was started. Memorial United Methodist Church was looking to start a clothing ministry but only had a few people. Pam Dunkel knew about Red Door Clothes and invited Gust Olson and Jane Johnson to speak to their women's group. Bags of donated new and used items and some cash were donated and 4 people joined us. Linda and Carol con nue to come almost every me we are open with bags of stuff. Another goal grew beyond just 2 churches and AT&T. Michael, Jim and Chris an were men from around, as they termed it, for many years. Chris an got a job, Michael has died and Jim felt he couldn't help any more. Yve e Rowe, a friend of Jill Paradowski's, has two daughters that needed volunteer hours for school so they came for several years. Yve e s ll comes. The last 2 or 3 years Greg and Mary Jo have joined us as volunteers from guests. Sue Geischen, the lead volunteer for the Mar n Luther High School rummage sale, called to invite Red Door Clothes to their clean up day. We received as many men's clothes and other items that we could pack at no charge. The rummage sale served us for 10 years in Spring and Fall. This Spring was their last rummage sale. What a blessing Mar n Luther High School's Rummage Sale was to us. Trinity parishioners, their friends, rela ves, work places and beyond have donated so many wonderful items. Trinity parishioners and friends have donated so many hours of volunteer me. In the beginning we had help with set up on Fridays and sor ng on Mondays so many people helped behind the scenes. Thank you to all for your helping hands and your prayers. We will have a celebra on of this wonderful ministry. Watch the Tidings. Please con nue to donate men's clothing, towels, sheets and blankets ONLY un l July. Our last day of opera on is Saturday, September 16,
