1 VOLUME SEVEN ˑ ISSUE TWELVE DECEMBER 2018 Your Priest Wants To Know!!! While being a parish priest is a mul -faceted role which o en looks different from congrega on to congrega on, one key role that is a part of every priest s work is being a pastor to her/his people. And just exactly what does being a pastor look like in the day-to-day life of a priest. Some mes, it looks like visi ng sick parishioners in the hospital or at home. Some mes it looks like a phone conversa on about planning a funeral or answering a random theological ques on. Some mes, pastoral care looks like conversa ons about life transi ons (employment, marriage, health, divorce, births or death). Some mes, pastoral care looks like having a cup of coffee and ge ng to know more about one another. Some mes, pastoral care looks like a card, an , or a facilitated connec on. Some mes pastoral care is invisible as the priest prays for the concerns shared with her/him by parishioners. So...pastoral care can be as simple as a 3-minute phone call or as complex as sharing the arduous, serpen ne journey through the healthcare system as a parishioner deals with a terminal disease. A MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF TRINITY CHURCH WAUWATOSA To be sure, many (but not all) people think about calling their priest during mes of distress; most people forget that clergy are available to talk about non-emergency issues as well, such as one s spiritual journey, ques ons related to the Scriptures, or ques ons related to life in our parish community. Priests are placed in the community of faith to be resources to the faith community! I look forward to hearing from you! Here s how to reach me: If you are calling during regular business hours, Monday through Thursday, please call the Parish Office at If I'm not there, Barb Neils or Barb Thompson, can usually tell you when I am likely to return. You can then leave a message either on my office voic , or the old fashioned way with one of the Barbs. If you are calling a er Parish Office Hours, please call me directly on my cell phone at This is not an emergency only line! If I cannot answer right way, please leave a voic message. I check the voic on my cell phone frequently throughout the day. For your informa on, though, I am an early morning person, and o en turn in for the evening between 10 and 10:30 p.m. Of course, emergencies know no schedule, so the phone is nearby at all mes just in case (and I crank up the ringer prior to re ring in the evenings in an cipa on of emergencies!). Of course, you can always share informa on with me via . My correct address is tosapriest@gmail.com. Unless I am on vaca on, I usually process several mes a day...even when I am out of town. You can also reach me by tex ng me at or by sending me a message via the Facebook Messenger app (Gary B. Manning). Parish priests cannot pastor their people without their people s help. When in doubt, over communicate. Be assured your parish priest wants to know! Advent blessings to you all! The Rev'd Gary B. 2 Advent Audio Diaries For a number of years, Gary Manning has produced daily audio diaries during Lent. These reflec ons are usually around 10 minutes long and focus on one of the readings from the lessons assigned for the Daily Office. As an experiment, Gary will be recording a daily audio diary every day during Advent (from Sunday, December 2nd through Monday, December 24...with a bonus Christmas Day episode!). He will post the link to each day s recording on his personal Facebook page, the Trinity Church Facebook page, and his blog (h p:// Each day s diary will be posted by 5 p.m. You can also sign up to receive direct no fica on of each day s recording via RSS feed by following this link: h ps://audioboom.com/channels/ It is Gary s hope that these daily audios will assist you in keeping a more inten onal Advent. Hai Project Update Join Ann Brophy in the parish hall December 2nd for a brief PowerPoint update on the Hai Project. Whether you are a faithful past supporter or new to the project, you will learn something inspiring and hopeful about our work with St. Marc s school in Jeanne e, Hai. There will also be delicious Hai an vanilla for sale, just in me for Christmas baking and hostess gi s, as well as the unique and tradi onal Hai an metal work in all sizes. SCRIP There is one remaining date in 2018 to order SCRIP cards. The date is: December 2 SCRIP Lower denomination cards are available and make great stocking stuffers which benefit Trinity's Outreach Programs. The list is available with the larger order form for SCRIP on the pillar outside the library. Drop-In/Drop-By Drop-by/Drop-in Hours will resume after January 1. If you would like to see the Rector this month, please call Barb Neils in the parish office at and she will make an appointment for you or you may call Gary directly on his cell phone
3 Compline and Conversa on in Advent For three Thursday evenings in Advent, December 6, 13, and 20, from 7:00-8:00 p.m., Gary Manning invites parishioners to join him in the Chapel of the Ascension for Compline by Candlelight, followed by a me of quiet conversa on. While Compline is a shortened liturgy (usually taking less than 10 minutes to complete), Compline by Candlelight will include several opportuni es for silence, which will lengthen the service to approximately 20 minutes. There will then be an opportunity for folks to exit the Chapel if they desire, or they may stay for an addi onal 10 minutes of silence and contempla on, during which so, seasonally appropriate music will be played during this 10 minute period to set the mood. At 7:30 p.m., Gary will lead a conversa on, for anyone interested, centered upon the Collect for the Week (Advent 1, 2, and 3...found in the Book of Common Prayer, pp. 211 & 212). The evening will conclude no later than 8:00 p.m. Please consider a ending at least one of these opportuni es, as your schedule permits. Set aside some inten onal me to pray in a sacred space with God s people during this holy season. For those parishioners whose schedules preclude a ending any of the liturgies at the Chapel, please consider praying Compline every Thursday evening in your home. The service begins on page 127 in the Book of Common Prayer. If you don t know how to pray this par cular liturgy, Gary will be producing a brief how to video which will be available on the Trinity Church website and the Trinity Church Facebook page. Having a prayerful Advent takes planning. Let s begin our planning now! First Friday Family Fellowship Everyone is invited to join the First Friday Family Fellowship group on Friday, December 7 for a potluck meal, fellowship and the opportunity to learn more about St. Nicholas of Myra, star ng at 6 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Please bring a dish to share. If you plan to a end, please contact Liz Paulsen at liz.paulsen@yahoo.com or

5 Tips regarding 2018 year end contribu ons from Beth Vogel, Treasurer *If possible, please pay your remaining 2018 pledge before year end. Any contribu- on received on or before December 31, 2018 will be reported on your 2018 Contribu on Statement, and, therefore, can be used as a 2018 tax deduc on Contribu on Statements will be sent out the last week in January. *To be sure any year-end contribu ons are credited for 2018 tax purposes, the contribu on must be at the church no later than Monday, December 31, If no one is in the office, just drop the contribu on through the mail slot. The mail slot is located East of the parking lot doors. If you drop it in the mail, it needs to be postmarked on or before December 31st. *Please indicate on your check to what account the contribu on should be credited (i.e. prepaid 2019 pledge, 2018 pledge, Christmas flowers, Christmas offering, memorials, weekly flowers, rector's discre onary account, etc.) If you have any ques ons, contact the parish office and leave a message for Barbara Thompson, Financial Secretary, or Beth Vogel, Treasurer. Here is What Community Outreach Looks Like Last month the Outreach commi ee had an opportunity to work with Jefferson School for their community outreach day because of our contact with Megan White from our church. The fourth grade class wanted to make blankets for someone and Trinity had just formed a partnership with Kathy's House to make blankets. The school needed some help purchasing fleece and we used their hands to help make the blankets. This is what a day of community service was like for fourth graders at Jefferson Elementary School. No ce all the smiles on their faces. They ALL worked together to get it done. They worked hard for 2 hours, all 40 of them, to e 22 blankets that will be delivered to Kathy's House. Thanks so much for Megan's energy around this and for the children reaching out to us so they could do this project. It was such a win-win project! 5
6 Kentucky Derby at our Awesome Auc on for Outreach Raised $9,300 There was a saddle, bales of hay, winning ribbons and folks dressed up wearing all kinds of hats. We had a room filled with many items donated by our community and YOU all for outreach. Where was this? Trinity Church s Awesome Auc on for Outreach on November 3rd h. The theme was Kentucky Derby. This annual event raised $9,300 that will be shared with our partners in need in the community and beyond. We had fun with the wine and gi card pulls, all of the silent auc on items and of course the live auc on. One special end of the evening live auc on items went to three lucky winners from one very special young lady, Cora Eisenmann. She is 8 years old and will make the winners a choice of several baked items. YUMMY. Thanks to Cora we raised an addi onal $495. The auc on is planned during the six months prior to the event by a wonderful commi ee who begin by selec ng the theme and then plan the event from there. This year we had the parish vote on the theme and Kentucky Derby won. From the games, to the food, the decora- ons, the ckets, and setup of the tables the commi ee prays that it will be a success. Special thanks go to all of YOU who a ended, donated, prayed for the event, or invited a friend. This event does not happen without so many people. Joan Pfeil, Joe Murrenus- Mehalopoulos, and Ann White kept the food coming, and Amanda Robison led the decora ng commi ee. Jenice Carolan and Sharon Long planned a party for the kids and made sure they had a great me; Jonah Watkins, Ka e Hermanson and Lizzy Long were there to help them. Melissa Paradowski, Leah Thornberry, Beth Vogel and Heather (Melissa s friend) helped with checkout and the Barbs in the office took care of many details of the evening. Finally, I would love to acknowledge the commi ee who worked so hard to plan this event. Amanda Robison, Ann White, Joan Pfeil, Allison Kelly, Deb Dion-Simon, Lynn Fohr, Sara Hall, Claudia Roessl, Beth Vogel, Leah Thornberry, Sharon Long, Melissa and Jill Paradowski (hope I did not miss anyone). We had set up help from Jill Wellman, Paul Paradowski and Ann Brophy. We would love to have more of you join in the fun. In 2019, we will have our 20th Awesome Auc on and we want to plan some new and exci ng things for the evening. Please join us. You can me at jill.paradowski@gmail.com if you are interested in helping. The planning starts next April. Thanks for everything and enjoy some pictures of the evening.
